Oga Abobi is not language but slang, secondary' woto woto is not a language too and it's not originated from Port Harcourt but Anambra.

Because Nollywood is very big across Africa and the world, our movies has been a great influence to many African English countries and most of them now understand and copy to speak our version of pidgin English.

The closest country to Nigeria in terms of similarities in pidgin English is Liberia, Sierra Leone then Ghana.

You cannot list States and be mentioning Calabar as one of them, for whatever intents. Calabar is the capital of Cross River State. The state has a litany of other ethnicities. Even the Calabar itself is not dominated by the Efiks. Most of the people claiming indigenous roots in Calabar are originally from Odukpani, Akamkpa and Akpabuyo.

Same way they constantly call Jos and not plateau.

I don't think it's a fact they all do but you are right when you said because it's cued from English language, they could understand "a bit" not all the time.

That English example you gave, a lot of non English speaking countries speak it that way, like the Arabs, Pakistanis.....that's how they speak and because their english is poor it tunes like pidgin english

If I say " abeg carry your matter dey go" ... even if you are a linguist in English language from havard, you would never understand what I just said. (Using non westafricans/foreigners as a case study)

The verdict is a foreigner would understand a certain pidgin that has atleast 80% full English words and, not all pidgin.

U are wrong here. U are mistaking PIGIN for SLANGS.


There are 2very very different things.

Abobi and Woto Woto are SLANGS.

There is basic standard Nigeria PIGIN that reflects in all Nigeria geographical area.


In port harcourt they would say ABOY,
in Lagos they would say OBOY.
Those are SLANGS.


Those are SLANGS.


Nigerians Pigins are basic standard broken shortcuts. That's why they call it BROKEN ENGLISH.
