The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has described fuel subsidy as an organised crime.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Obi made the statement on Monday while speaking on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ on what approach he would have taken differently in resolving the looming strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

“Fuel subsidy is organised crime. I said it repeatedly that it should be removed,” Obi said. “For me, the approach would have been, is to remove the corruption and criminal side of it and remove the excess demand.”

“By doing this, you would have reduced it by 50 per cent. The remaining 50 per cent is what we would have been able to, after consultation with various stakeholders in order to find a way in an organised manner, remove and show the proceed of the gains of the removal to be invested in critical development areas.”

Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, is known for vocal criticism of the Tinubu-led government, especially in managing public finances. He had pledged to remove fuel subsidy and invest the proceeds in critical development areas, such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, if elected president.

He lost the 2023 election to President Bola Tinubu.

Fuel subsidy payment is where president makes his money. Instead of paying 5 naira per liter, he pays 500 naira. Instead of paying for 20 million liters daily, he pays for 40 million liters. Instead of paying A, B and C, he pays A-Z. A corrupt Tinubu can never stop it. He rather increase it.

The presenter should've asked him how he intend to tackle the corruption. I am 100% sure he would've gone blank and end up saying nothing.

Imaging someone who want to remove subsidy saying he would consult the same corrupt elements who benefited immensely from the same subsidy. Abi Obi has another people he would consult outside NNPC or National assembly.

If you can't learn from Jonathan attempt and do what Tinubu did, there is no fuc-king way you will remove fuel subsidy in Nigeria. By the time these thieves sponsored different protests and NLC to embark on indefinite strike, no one will tell you to forget the idea.

2) borrow additional $15 billion (to be used for manufacturing sector only)
3) improve the oil production
