Actually it depends on the woman. She had multiple ovulation and several eggs were released. A man usually has millions of sperm cells in one ejaculation so there was more than enough cells to fertilize the multiple eggs.

My mum had twins twice in the 70s. I'm next to one of the twins. My aunt, who was my mum's eldest sister, now late, had twins once. My material grandmother had twins once. Same family oo... at a time IVF never existed. My mum waited before having the twins whom I'm next to...today, they'd have said she had them via IVF.

In those days, there used to be multiple births, even much more than what we see today
