Customs are there to regulate people's way of life. That custom is meant to checkmate immorality during the days of old. A man cannot own a child that he has not paid the mother's bride price. Two persons i know have had to pay bride price on their late partner before their burial to be able to claim the children those women bore for them.

I hate this our Igbo culture. It's outdated. Imagine a child born outside marriage growing up without even knowing his father. Simple because, our useless tradition demind one useless bride price. They will now deny me my child because I did not marry her. Na thunder go fire whoever bring such tradition to our land!

I am married to an ilaje princess from ondo. A kings daughter and I had to do the right thing to be properly married, white wedding and court wedding was not as important to them as the traditional marriage rites.
I see so many young ladies here in Lagos that will get pregnant, stay with one egbon, saying it is her husband, after 8 months the lady is back in her parents house, next thing is to start runs. Is that the culture you appreciate?

The man should have paid the bride price since he chose to marry her. However, changing the names of the children is a waste of time. If their dad was responsible to them, they will bear their father's name once they're on their own.
