I've been perusing the various texts on the precolonial kingdoms that existed on what is called modern-day Nigeria, and I'm surprised to see there are no renowned Igbo monarchs. By renowned, I mean a ruler similar in stature to Oduduwa, Oba Oranmiyan, Alaafin Shango, Oba Ewuare of Benin, Sarki Abdullahi Burja of Kano, Sarki Yaji of Kano. Does anyone have any examples? Please no tribalism |

StOla:Identifying like a subject of a pre colonial servitude has made you deny & loose your cultural heritage. If the OP is wise, he should know what egalitarian democracy already means. He wants to taunt the Igbo people. What a shame |

Kalvan:Each man was the ruler of his own house. That's why they never had empires or conquered others. You need an army to conquer others. |

Kalvan:yes Eze Nri exist in precolonial Nigeria research well and other kings like the Aro king and kingdom exists but, they are more of spiritual kings or religious kings, they don't hv any political powers because the political powers lies with the people that's why Igbos has the oldest form of democracy known to man, it is believed by the scholars that democracy started in igboland. the people makes decisions how the day to day governance of the community will look like. This political powers is vested on the people the kindred selected to represent them or the older persons in the kindred, who reports to the people. |

Kalvan:Igbos were confederate people, they didnt do much of kings and Kingdoms before colonial Nigeria. Even to this day, Kings are not held in high regards in Igbo land as others such as Bini, Yoruba or Hausa. We cant all be the same |

Those this thread is intended for are surviving with government patronage unlike those trying to mock them who cannot survive a year without government patronage and that’s they are doing all they can to hold them down Believing in yourself is the only thing that will save you when it begins to rain |

In Igboland everyman is a King. Nobody is bigger than another so deceiving others into working and toiling for you was an abomination. All the times Igbos ever met monarchy it was forbidden which is why Ewuare was translated by ancient Igbos as Owuaru meaning "he is an abomination". I love Igbo egalitarian society |

Abagworo:This lack of centralisation of power made them militarily weak and vulnerable to the slave trade. If they had a large centralised kingdom like Benin, they could have banned the slave trade like Benin did. But because they were balkanised and fragmented, existing in little autonomous clans and villages, they couldn’t act in unity to fight off slave raiders. They couldn’t even build cities, because there were never enough of them in any particular location to support urban life. There is strength in numbers. |

Are there any renowned U.S precolonial monarchs? Monarchy is one, out of numerous systems of governance. Everyone must not run the same system. Igbos practiced democracy, which is seen as a more advanced system than monarchy. So, actually, Igbos are too developed and civilised to have a renowned king. |
| Re: Are There Any Renowned Igbo Pre Colonial Monarchs? by MXrep: 11:03am On Oct 24, 2023 |
Kalvan:While you were struggling with primitive monarchy igbos have already evolved into advanced democracy. If monarchy is good why was it overthrow all over Europe? Only Britain still keep theirs for ceremonial purpose only. It's the backwards monarchist mentality that keeps Nigeria backwards |

None. They were still living in the bushes and had little human communication skills. They were hairy and were always beating their chests like gorillas so all documentations about them were classified ad " wild life" ![]() |

While those that operated kingdoms were easily conquered by the British under six months, the British- ibo war lasted for 34 yrs delaying amalgamation, under the assault command of two groups, the Eastern ibo aro Confederacy, in charge of the abam warriors, and the western ibo ekumeku group Confederacy, controlling ekumeku warriors, at a point, The British pushed all their soldiers from north, Southwest and as far as Sierra Leone to the east, yet it raged on for more 13 yrs, the war ended with an agreement for indirect administration, through local chief under district commissioners, this was in October 1913, by 1914 Nigeria was amalgamated Below is a picture of abam warriors with their locally made uzu awka guns, the pic was taken in front of clans head OBi

Maybe my question should be were there any renowned precolonial Igbos that ended up in the history books? Statesmen, warriors, anyone? Btw for the people citing the USA, the USA was once a colony pledged to the crown of King George III, and eventually George V before the heavy handedness of the crown with it’s taxation and other matters led to the revolt against the crown |

MXrep:Fair. Throughout history up until 100-200 years ago, the men that made the history books were monarchs, warriors, conquerors. From Charlemagne to Napoleon. Alexander the Great to Louis XV. My question should be who were the great Igbos from precolonial times? Names that show up in the history books, I couldn’t name one, so please assist me |

MXrep:Monarchy ended in Europe largely due to the power and wealth that accrued to the merchant classes after they were funded and sent on exploration and exploitation missions overseas by the monarchs. Had nothing to do do with Europe ‘evolving’ out of anything. Also it was this new wealth which created excess capacity away from mere food survival, that spurred the industrial revolution. |
