Tinubu Should Sign Executive Order On Unexplained Wealth, Says Ndume

Senator Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Tinubu to sign an executive order on unexplained wealth.

Ndume, who is the lawmaker representing Borno South under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), made the remark in the wake of a comment by retired Supreme Court Justice Musa Muhammad Dattijo over the level of corruption in the country’s judiciary.

While saying there are laws in the UK and other parts of the world to tackle such issues, the lawmaker said he attempted to introduce some bills in that regard.

“I have tried several times but you know, there were excuses here and there,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. “I think the best way to get this across is when the bill comes from the executive or in the interim, the current president should sign an executive bill on unexplained wealth.”

According to Ndume, the level of unexplained wealth in the country especially among politicians and civil servants requires some laws to combat.

“I know of civil servants that live in houses that not only their income, their salaries, or their life pension – assuming they would live in this world for 90 years or 100 years – cannot buy.” Senator Ndume added.

“The same thing with some of our politicians especially the politically exposed persons like ministers, you find as you rightly said, some of them come to the National Assembly, and suddenly [there is so much money].”

Reiterating that politicians are public servants, he called on the public to hold them accountable.

“Well, I will partially accept what you said,” Ndume said when asked if the lawmakers have failed to pass bills to curb the trend of unexplained wealth in the country.

“The public are those that are supposed to put us on our toes to represent them and account for our actions,” the senator added.

Each of us has a role to play in viciously combating corruption. This is a very constructive and credible interview.

The only part of the link he left out is getting the judiciary on board as well to avoid the use of technicalities in court to frustrate the law or executive order against unexplained wealth.

The first task in our own court right now is to demand for a strong and effective law against unexplained wealth. He is right that such law exists in other countries and I know of the UK for example. The President can issue executive order that temporarily place a lien on assets possessed by civil servants, politicians, citizens and foreigners domiciled or doing business in Nigeria who have unexplained wealth.

While the executive order is running, the National Assembly should get to work and organize a public workshop to collate the input from the judiciary, executive and members of the public. The various inputs should be used to make a robust and effective law against unexplained wealth and empower the DSS, NDLEA, NAFDAC, EFCC, ICPC, CBN ,Police and FIRS with prosecutorial rights to confiscate and jail those with unexplained wealth.

This will act as a strong deterrent against unexplained wealth across the broad spectrum including those who stumble upon sudden wealth through illicit drug deals, internet fraud , ritual yahoo plus etc. Not only the corrupt civil servants and politicians, some of those non civil servants and politicians commit far grievous crimes like those ones that hacked N8 billion of depositors money in the trust of Access bank recently. That's going to be extremely difficult in Nigeria where many make money from informal sector many are unbanked, and many don't have taxable income

Things are changing. Forget all these olodo mob raised badly to insult, criminally defame and cyberbully. They have nothing else to think or do apart from naysaying because they were badly raised and poorly educated from dysfunctional families and backgrounds so they don't understand jack. When they insult you or Nigeria, just know that they are unhappy and unfortunate people. Unhappy and unfortunate people are bad luck from bad luck family backgrounds.

From this week now, everyone is expected to link his or her NIN to the consumer's electricity meter. Your nin is linked to your bvn and firs has access to your bank transactions. The recent cash transfer for the unbanked is now strictly for those with bvn and NIN and the recent executive order will move all forex transactions to digital platforms such that trade and hoarding of physical forex become outlawed.

It's a gradual process but it's really touching places. Look at the CBN price verification system and how suddenly it appears import business is crumbled whereas the real issue is that CBN now demands a transparent process for importers to compare the prices.

Many of us have no clue that things have really changed. If you register a copy in Nigeria today, you immediately get a TIN number and no govt regulator will do business with you until you activate your tax portal. Please go and read the latest fiscal and tax policies and study very intently, that document is a game changer. Ignore it at your peril. Federal Government is still the biggest spender in the economy.

Well ... another plus is Nigeria is rapidly going cashless with all this MFB like Palmpay, Opay taking the charge.. just like Kenya mpesa and MTN mobile money.. even the informal sector of the economy is catching up with market women now accepting cashless transfer

Only a child from a bad, terrible, horrible and dysfunctional family will wake up first thing Monday morning to insult , cyberbully another person and even insult a person who is his father and grandparents age mate. Only unhappy and unfortunate people do that.

The word of God that says honour thy father and thy mother is for everyone old enough to be your father and mother so when you despise such people and disrespect them, the word of God, not mine, is that it shall never be well with you.

This is why they say charity begins at home. It is not well with you because you were badly raised. I will remind you of what Mr Bayo Onanuga tweeted and the verdict of Bishop Oyedepo for youths like you who curse your parents and your parents/grandparents mates on the social media. You're forever doomed with calamity was Bishop Oyedepo 's verdict from the word of God.

You are unwise and naive if you think that , by divine and natural law, every filthy word you type will not further hurt your already crooked destiny. You need not look elsewhere for why bad luck, rejection, failed relationships, perpetial near success syndrome, stagnation in life, failed dreams, unfruitfulness and horrible things happen to you, your family and anyone who tries to help you. .

This excuse is as lame as it is foolish.
Once the law is in place any fund sourced from the informal sector whoever sourced should quickly formalize it or forfeit it simple as A B C.

Nigerians will always find excuse for those subjugating them to keep plundering them. Just look at the senseless excuse / leeway this one is already giving for political thieves to keep stealing.

BAT/BAAT is the new Sherrif in town ...this is a germaine suggestion but i'm not sure there is any political will to do anything to fight/counter corruption...because signing such tantamount to fixing certain corrupt practices.

Wittyness.

I have travelled to rural Kogi state a place with no electricity, and I know this phantom policy is a waste of time over there
