I had the column removed in my build in order to optimize the ground floor parking space design from the aspects of column network layout.

For me, it’s a case of choosing functionality over form (aesthetics).

Not having a well structured column layout can/will affect a car’s turning radius in a multi dwelling apartment.

Column wasn’t removed as an afterthought. It was removed on paper before we moved to site.

A project that has 16.1m beam that’s standing for 2 decades won’t treat a 6.2m beam as an afterthought.

We were deliberate and intentional on all that was carried out on the project.

The feasibility depends on where you intend to have the structure built, considering weather and soil type.

The fact you're seeing pictures means it's feasible BUT might not be feasible in your location.

Here’s my POV, it’s only when you get to site you can know what’s feasible.

Everything always look great on paper.

So someone who said he’d build carcass of a 1 bed with N200k might be right on paper until he get to site.

Someone can tell me, he’d do POP ceiling of 92sqm for me at 8,500/sqm.

It’s until he get to site he’d know whether the 8500/sqm can deliver the same job in a building with 6.2m headroom 🌚

So until you get to site, you can’t know what’s feasible. Even structurally

But again (with due respect) - you start from paper (pc) to determine what's feasible.

That's why you have the following.

1. Building plan
2. Structural designs
3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT REPORT (in capital)
4. Safety report if applicable
5. Building Estimate (BOQ)

AND MANY MORE - ALL ON PAPER.

You can't afford to get to site b4 knowing what's feasible - by then a lot would have been wasted and life probably lost.

Imagine building your 61.1m beam on site BEFORE the structural design on paper.

If you still don't get my point - I can't help you.

I have a project in Adeniji Jones, can you specify the type of foundation it’d require without a preliminary site investigation/survey??

Once again, you can’t know what’s feasible until you visit the site.

Aforxzy raised a valid concern yesterday but like she always do. She went awol without getting the perspective of the other side.

Have a look at the picture below.

The point where I had the caution tapes was where we were supposed to have a column in our proposed structural drawings.

While carrying out our preliminary site survey, I raised a concern that we cannot have a column at that point (not for aesthetics but safety concern).

So we redesigned the structure to have a cantilevered beam and we move to site.

During construction, I’ve personally witnessed cars hitting the scaffold at that point and we had to put caution tapes on it to alert people driving around the site premises.

As a good manager, you don’t have to wait for it to happen to understand how to prevent occurrences in your sites.


One of the thing that has helped me so far in construction is the way we learnt project management and the person who taught me.

The only things we discuss in meetings are dependencies, deliverables and challenges and we are always ready to learn from others.

Unfortunately, we live in a world where people jump into conclusion without getting their facts right.

This topic is something that many people designing underground parking needs to pay good attention to BUT unfortunately we are first Nigerians.

I can relate. I saw it in one of your post 😂 where you said you have never use 4 bars to carry two floors.

Interestingly, that would work in the structural analysis BUT what I know is that the 4 bars of 1980 is different from the 4 bars of 2023.

Let's just dropped it...I even improved on the foundation ( spread raft as against normal raft) at my expense having mobilise to site.... I choose to make that sacrifice because it will upset the budget which may compel client to ignore my proposal
