OLD DADS --- 7/10

A fantastic comedy flick that explored the problem of radical woke and cancel culture in America, the issue of freedom of speech, the theme of family and friendship, and the issue of anger, sensitivity and personal evolution. I have to admit, the movie (written, produced and directed by Bill Burr) aligned with the theme of his stand-up comedies --- a satire of radical woke and cancel culture.

In addition, the performances of the cast, especially Bill Burr, were impressive, same with the musical scores.

The movie is what I will describe as the melting pot of comedy, personal evolution, friendship, socio-politics, and satire. Truly an amiable flick.

I just saw this today. It's a bit old, 2014. But has solid action, a lil humor and good CGI. Highly recommend.

I have been feeling quite overwhelmed lately that i have basically just mentally tapped out off seeing movies/series and i think i barely scraped through just about 3 movies all October, Terrible terrible form 😩, but when i saw this popular urban legend coming to the big screen i had to obliged.

7/10.

Your own good na... for the whole month of October, I watched only ONE movie. It wasn't even a great movie sef. 🙃🙃 A handful of series here and there that can't even amass to a full season of a full fledged show.

Hoping to pick myself up this month.

The Origin: Madam Koi Koi Part 1/E1 (2023).

9ja boarding house most popular myth comes to life!.

A long review.....pardon 🙏🏿

Billed as a 2 part affair or episodes if you will, so i am hoping this review falls within the purview of this thread.

This first part/episode was really really good as a pace setter and i am quite surprised how well put together the writing and character development was, it clearly showed, some really serious people were in charge.

Madam Koi Koi mythology is not a new tale, if you were born in the 70s, 80s, 90s and even to some extent, Gen Z, will totally be able to relate to it. This retelling had our central character, Amanda, changed school, to a Catholic boarding school in the fictional town of Malomo in the 90s, as she begins her sojourn in this new school, she keeps being jolted by a nightmare, of a certain unnamed horror with "a red koi koi" shoe, lurking in the shadows , and we are quickly reminded, why we are here and things are definitely not as they seem in this school and indeed the town.

I know i have praised the writing, but the acting and delivery was equally top notch, only a few known faces, but the newbies stole the show!. There was a rape scene, that was so well acted that i had to actually fast forward it at the time, because of how true to life and grossly disturbing it was! Impeccable acting!

As with Nollywood movies set in the olden times, continuity error always seems to rear it's ugly head, and i was on the look out for one, and they almost didn't disappoint, the setting, props, Clothing style fit the era it was set, being 70' to 90's. The pulled out a fresh "tortoise" car and i was wondering were they got one, so pristine lol. The students especially the girls, on first look, looked over age to play teenagers in sec school, but then again these are, how mature, girls used to look in sec school back then, i have my mum's sec school photos to confirm 😃, so props to the casting crew. The little blot, was when one character used a popular phrase that only came out in real life about 2 years ago, so there's no way it is been said in a movie supposedly set in the 90s, i voiced out my concerns to the lead actress on X (formerly known as Twitter) and she duly replied and said it was rather anachronism and not a continuity error, it seemed a rather convenient answer but i allowed it because of how good the other continuity props were.
And, also it was billed as horror, and one of the new genres Nollywood is exploring, but they are still piss poor at it, the jump scares in this were so minimal and scaled to zero, it rather made the whole thing look like a drama, but then again, horror movie makers here are still relying heavily on make up to bring that horror flair because VFX use is still alien here, and i know horror make up can be quite expensive and only few make up/costume studios offer such services, but i would really love them to up the horror ante in the next part .

Even though they already promised that it was a 2 part affair, i was kicking myself when it ended abruptly as things were kicking into proper gear.
Thank goodness the next part isn't too far away.

For now, this is a great intro that seems to stick a decent landing in what they were trying to do, so on to the next one.

7/10.
You wrote all these things and still have them 7/10, Bros you go dey stingy with marks oo

I don't understand how you watch 3 seasons of a show and rate it 6/10

If it was that bad, you could have just dropped it since

They tried to use Thanos rizz for clout in the last trailer but it looks like it failed spectacularly 👀👀.

Severe superhero genre fatigue currently plus MCU is currently toast, so the odds were severely stacked against this one. It will tank like a mf! 😩😩

Tanking is an understatement. This is more or less an Atomic Bomb loading.... grin grin

I haven't even watched tge trailer sef but saw many peeps saying it's bait.
The useless Disney shows has a lot to do with this fatigue. Too much content and below par at that.

They were pretty lucky Dune Part 2 vacated this weekend. If not no premium IMAX screens for them. That will help in boosting the numbers up.

Lol, I remember peeps claiming The Marvels would prove serious competition for Dune late last year... I dey laff. It would have been murdered. They were lucky WB postponed.

Quills (2000).....8.9/10

It's a story about the later years of the French libertine writer Marquis De Sade. Depravity, lust, perversion, blasphemy and unchecked liberalism is the order of the day.

While there were glimpse of Sade's extreme depravities in his writings and behaviour, his most extreme works were shuttered off the screen. His extremities was blunted on screen but the impeccable performance from Geoffrey Rush as Marquis De Sade was more than capable of bringing the character to life and in some way garner sympathy from the audience.
Joaquin Phoenix brought a memorable performance as the priest Abbe. Phoenix was a beautiful man when he was young sha.
The ever so beautiful Kate Winslet delivered an intriguing performance as the bubbly Madeleine.
Michael Caine proudly delivered as the two-timing Dr Collard.
The cast more than delivered.

The ending shows the paradoxical way of how life can be. A girl raised in a convent finally gives in to the world's temptations after glimpsing freedom... running off from her husband's house with her lover who was contracted to furnish their home.
Then there's a girl who was raised as a liberal and enmeshed in De Sade's morally bankrupt works and a firm admirer and enabler of his blasphemous art.....she's a worldly woman. Where life shows how funny it can be: the worldly woman dies a virgin, while the religious upright woman lives her life on the run and on the pleasures the world has on offer.

The movie also weirdly highlights censorship, hypocrisy, unchecked libertine beliefs, art as a form of expression, sadism (of course this is where it was coined from), masochism.

The movie is also a tragic love story. A forbidden love story at that. Love, lust, desire, chastity, self-control, duty, all concocted so wonderfully. It's a multilayered movie with various deeper meanings into it, you might miss the point if you get carried away by the gruesome violence, copious nudity and the entertainment in between.
A simple plot of morals weaved into a complex compelling story. It challenges your beliefs about what's right? what's wrong?

I wasn't pleased with how it ended as it brought an anticlimax of feelings with the final third. Still, I can't deny it's not a beautiful piece of work. Philip Kaufman delivered with pristine directing chops.

Highly recommended.

A Haunting in Venice......7.5/10

A nice movie. Good cast and great pace. This one wasn't as intriguing as the previous films but it still got the heart. Nice work meshing it with the supernatural and the physical.
This murder was more easy to decrypt but it was entertaining all the same.
