Lol, no be the same thing.

Whoever buys dollar and sells at a higher rate has not made money. He only preserved the value of money. If he wants to buy the same dollar again, he will also buy at the new rate.

Someone buys petrol at 600, sells at 800 and goes back to buy at the same 600. That's extortion.

In a way Wole Soyinka is right .When I say in a way , I mean social media has become sort of distraction that makes real learning kinda difficult .

Currently I have books I have been trying to read for months yet unable to make much more progress. Yes my job is now time demanding but the free time I don’t use sleeping or working , I find it difficult to use it for reading . Once I pick up my phone and enter social media I just waste hours getting amused/entertained by the contents therein while learning very little thing .

In fact , of recent in my quiet time I do wonder if I would’ve graduated with very good grades if it was this advanced social media age with many distractions I attended UNI . Like post-2020 when there’s TikTok , Twitter and IG where there’s always one trending issue to take off as much as 2-3 days off u e.g Mohbad case, Fatoyinbo case that year , Hakimi marital matter , Davido vs the American Only fans girl, etc . These are topical issues u will learn little or nothing from, but u will spend days following the news , discussing it on all social media platforms and even nairaland .

What I don’t agree with Wole Soyinka on is the fact that his bias towards this generation’s technology has blindsided him to see the advantages of these new technological innovations. He choose to only see and talk about the negatives which conforms to his bias . He chose not to talk about young prodigies that have used IT to put Nigeria on the world map. He chose not to talk about young talents who barely completed their college degree but doing exceedingly well today thanks to skills like programming and the likes. Some of these people are well read more than some professors sef . People who work with dashboards , who have found simpler ways of doing some of the stuff our so called professors want to do just one hard way( their own way ).

You can imagine that in Nigerian newspapers when their opening for an academic job in a university , they will still be asking a professor , Dr, Senior Lecturer , etc to send 15 hard copies of their CV , their academic credentials etc; in an age where u just need to email ur CV , do virtual interview and get ur offer letter emailed to you with little or no physical contact involved .

When I see youth Corpers who volunteer to work for INEC in this age and time with the amount of violence in places like Bayelsa and Kogi ; I do wonder if those corpers have extra lives they kept somewhere .

The money paid corpers for these INEC jobs are not even worth the risk involved sef .

Ur future fit be becoming MD of a big company , but all that can get cut-off because u are trying to earn paltry 30 something thousand working for INEC that doesn’t even have any provision for substantial death benefits or compensation for ur beneficiary or urself if anything unto-wards happen to u. I know na , but for u to make that much on the sides then definietly u are rigging for one or two parties at ur polling unit . That even makes it worse cos if it’s a community that get skuru for head , they can declare maximum shishi for u immediately they find out ur game.

For someone who is not out to rig in Favour of any party , all he will get on the sides are money from two or three different party agents for refreshment/lunch which does not come at a price for ur life .

Soyinka made good points. He actually acknowledged that there are positives to the issue which is why he referenced the Arab Spring. He was however interested on this occasion in pointing out some of the negatives. He also noted that it is not a black and white issue. It is quite nuanced and complex as you yourself have said.

Your point about the distractions is 100% true. Internet is a huge avenue for learning but if you are not focussed you will lose your way in an endless cycle of videos and memes which take you away from meaningful learning. Then you watch videos and you see mediocre people with limited knowledge abusing and insulting academics and experts either based on their feelings or just to trend.

Overall the internet and social media are net positives to society but they are not perfect and one has to be aware of the potential pitfalls.

IN SEARCH FOR HUMANITY

1. It is almost impossible to find words to describe the horror and atrocities wantonly committed, daily, on Palestinians, especially children.

2. We, the world, witness these in the comforts of our homes but, we are powerless to do anything.

3. It is heart wrenching to see children in Gaza, running around looking for their parents, most probably dead.

4. For goodness sake, these are children, the same age as our children, our grandchildren, whom we would fuss over even after insect bite.

5. Have we lost our humanity? Have we no compassion, no pity, no tears for them?

6. Indeed, we see protests all over the world but it doesn’t seem to bother those with the power to put a stop to it.

7. While we can’t expect the bloodthirsty Israelis to stop their murdering spree, we should at least see leading civilised nations doing the needful. They can make a difference.

8. The civilised world have achieved great things and even send people to the moon. And yet, they can’t even put a stop to the massacre of the Palestinians including their children.

9. We fight for animal rights, only to allow people human beings like us being continuously humiliated in the worse possible way…abused, tortured and killed over more than 70 years!

10. We fret over poverty and homelessness yet, we see, Palestinian homes being bulldozed, villagers evicted and their houses flattened, with the people still in them. And now entire neighbourhoods, buildings, hospitals are bombed and razed to the ground.

11. The civilised world witness before their eyes daily, genocide being committed.

12. And there are those who remain silent, quietly, extend support to Israel – moral and material – arms, intelligence and funds.

13. What kind of people are these?

14. They talk about Israel’s security. On Oct 7, some 1,400 Israelis were said to have died. Since then almost no deaths. But 10,000 Palestinians have now been killed. How many more do the Israelis want to kill?

15. Whose security is actually the one that had been breached?

16. We see Israeli soldiers but no Palestinian soldiers, only civilians.

17. It seems that the US and its allies do not want the murders to stop.

18. Israel now talks of a 4-hour ceasefire daily, a humanitarian pause. Seemingly to allow civilians to move to “safe” areas.

19. Once this pause is over, the killings will continue and the non-combatants will die in droves, bombed and blasted into smithereens.

20. What is happening in Gaza is not war. There are only Israeli soldiers mass murdering Palestinian civilians, children included. It is a massacre by a State on a people.

21. It is a conflict that has breached everything that is humane, morals and values. It is a massacre devoid of all sense of humanity.

22. A conflict where the arrogance, despicable, brutal, uncivilised nature the Zionist Jews are displaying for all to see.

23. We no longer have a right to claim we are civilised.

24. We have become barbarians.

I still had a discussion with a friend yesterday and we both agreed that nowadays the youth learn from people on social media even the simplest of things they should pick up and learn from their immediate environment . Like people listen to people like Davido, Wizkid , Burna etc and think they are always right simply because those are the guys making all the money , buying the luxury cars and what have u. People glamorize some of their indicent behavioris, think it’s cool and won’t mind replicating same in their own immediate environment/society .

Remember that time Davido literally disrespected Dele Momodu over his issues with his baby mama Sophia ? He said “Dele na my boy “ did not end there , but added it to the lyrics of his song . This is Dele his uncle’s friend o; someone that has known him from birth . The youth though it was cool Davido had to give it to Dele and put him in his place…. Blah blah…

Davido has since apologized to Dele but that moral value broken is gone.

Can u imagine this level of thinking.

You kill 1,400 Israelis for no justifiable reason , then u want to be in a position to dictate the number of Palestinians Israel can kill in return?. smh

This is just a classic case of "He who fetched ant-infested firewood should be ready to dine with lizards."

All these emotional diatribe will not move anybody. He should use his connect to advise Hamas to release the hostages being held by them and save the palestinians more misery. Simple!

The average Islam is a way of life Arab Muslim and northerner does not subscribe to the concept of human rights as kaffirs are second class human beings who do not worship Allah.

They do not subscribe to western civilization until it suits them in matters like this

What has the good doctor had to say about the Muslim on Muslim violence in Yemen for instance. That is another humanitarian disaster I have been reading about on and off for the past one year

All in all, the positives of technology and social media outweighs the negatives in hundred folds

Soyinka is just like this old men that don't like to see youngins blowing their lifetime net worths in a night..

He is kinda jealous that youths of these days don't have to go through the struggles they did in their own time..

And long shall his woes continue because he'd keep seeing small boys doing their thing and balling even more harder than he'd ever made or ever think 💬..

Soyinka takes high of himself.. he sees himself as the El dorado of whatever comes in his head.. datti called him a useless man and that's what he is..

He is a fanactic and extremist and should not be taking any serious

These are the negatives of this era he’s talking about .

Normally u no go dey the same space with Soyinka and call him a useless man, extremist and fanatic .

If u have reservations about him , his line of thought and views on topical issues, u will find a polite way of communicating ur disagreement with him without sounding condescending .

It’s this new era that makes it easy for u to just stay inside ur house and call a Nobel Laurete recognized for his works “useless “.

You assume soyinka is jealous of youth? Because he is seeing them blow money? There is nothing new under the sun there - we have all seen different entertainers blow through fortunes in our lifetime. Gazza, hammer, Bobby brown off the top of my head.

What soyinka is saying is that people are allowing social media to take over their critical thinking.

I remeber a university student arguing with me about hushpuppi. Telling me hushpuppi is billionaire - he pays his driver 600k a month. An objectively ridiculous statement but the boy swallowed it hook line and sinker along with other bs hushpuppi was spouting

You see the way we argue somethings here. Regularly in this age a layman will say something and people will just jump on it. Not just youth unfortunately. Every other day I see on SM that a bridge is about to collapse. Meanwhile it is just expansion and contraction.

Matters are made worse by the death of the print media and the rush for clicks over everything else. So the first goal of most news platforms today is to get the clicks. Post first and maybe ask questions later.
