South African comedian and former US TV show host Trevor Noah has taken centre stage with a tourism advert that has garnered a surprising amount of public approval.

The ‘Best of Us’ campaign was launched on Thursday in Johannesburg.

For the campaign, Noah will showcase his home country of South Africa through a series of packaged video-adverts which will be seen by millions of potential visitors around the world.

The ‘Best of Us’ campaign is targeted at travellers from the rest of the African continent and source markets such as Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States as South Africa strives to achieve its goal of 21-million annual visitors.

In the clip, Noah answers a few frequently asked questions, dispelling myths about the country with, of course, his comedic touch as he encourages visitors to come to South Africa.

"Trevor Noah is a true South African at heart and having him as the voice of the South African tourism sector will have great benefits for the sector.

“He is a global brand loved by people all over the world, and his partnership with the TBCSA is a major coup. I am confident that Trevor will help us to position South Africa as the destination of choice for global travellers,” said TBCSA CEO, Tshifhiwa Tshivhengwa.

Rumours that the comedian was expected to be paid 33 million rands (1.4 billion naira) for the advert that would promote South Africa as a tourist destination sparked a heated debate among South Africans on social media recently.

However, Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille had categorically denied any government involvement, saying the bill would be footed by the Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA), and that no government money would be spent on the venture.

TBCSA CEO Tshifhiwa Tshivhenga told News24 recently that he is the owner of the project and it has nothing to do with government.

“If we do the project, it will be a private sector initiative and we don’t report to government or Parliament,” he said at the time.
