The Killer.....6.5/10

This is probably the worst David Fincher movie I've ever watched. It's not a bad movie but I expected better from Fincher. It was nothing unlike Fincher's previous work and felt more or less like a generic hitman movie. It was pretty slow, boring, and somewhat flat most times...It was only when we got to Tilda Swinton's appearance that my interest was truly piqued and that's very much towards the end.

There were times I wondered what this was all about. It had little character, unlike Fincher's signature mastery. Only Fincher work to date I felt indifferent towards. Fassbender and Tilda did a good job but the plot and the story build up let them down. Film felt like it was meandering without a serious thought to the point to it all.

I also didn't quite find the Cinematography very kind as there were some weird angles and the occasional deliberate way they framed some scenes where characters' faces were cut out from the composition— mainly just showing their nose down to their lower body— it was mostly jarring and distracting.

The first Fincher movie I'd watched where I fell asleep a few times. The few times I felt "this is Fincher" was in the dialogue. Aside from that, this movie's quality doesn't come close to his filmography (at least the ones I've watched).

Not a bad movie. Just not David Fincher's strongest work judging by his pedigree. I guess it didn't help that I already watched 4 David Fincher films earlier this year before now. So the bar was set pretty fvvking high. Especially since he's presently my favourite director.

Hmmmm, the takes on this movie are so interesting, somewhat "inorganic" if i should term it properly.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), David Fincher's colleagues are praising the movie to the high heavens and some going far as calling it, "his magnum opus" and yet i keep seeing takes like yours from none industry heads saying it was average at best.

My best inclination is that those industry heads are probably lying or over rating the flick just to do right by one of thier own.

I don't think i have seen a rating above average on the thread here, and i most likely think that's the true reflection of it, though i am yet to see it.

David Fincher is an absolute legend but he was probably due a miss, so fairs but it continues to retritiate the notion i have had for a while that art as it pertains to movies, series and even music is a "dying breed" and I'm sorry, these 3 art forms may never hit the heights of yester years. I was comparing movies and songs from 00-10 and 16' to present some months back, i was so shocked at the obvious deep in quality. Back then you could see like 10 potential oscar best picture property in like the first half of the year, compared to now, because let's be serious, and i say this with love because i really like , but in a "proper movie year", Barbie shouldn't be anywhere near a "Oscar best shout". A "good" movie on a "good day" but totally blown out of proportion by the insane marketing gimmick mainly because of outside forces wanting to make bank with the hysteria.

Worse still, It is now a norm not to expect "magic" from film makers you reverred, because "The killers of the Flower Moon", hype died in like a week, and i have genuinely not heard anything about it in weeks, the hype of the build up was greater than the hype of the release itself and with "The Killer" going astray like this according to you lot, then we might have a serious problem!, because this 2 were supposed to be among the "absolute best" this year. Martin Scorsese and David Fincher having project out in the same year would have been on paper, an avid cinephile wet dream, but it doesn't seem like it. It is only going to get worse, because these actual old heads we trust to deliver on good movies, because they have had a rich history of cinema and the world around to draw inspiration from, are actually about to phase out and the number of projects they release will drastically reduced, so new heads filmmakers who are in thier late 20's and thirties are entering the scene now, Emma Seligman who made "Bottoms" is only 28! meaning her inspiration is from a "pre and post covid woke world, where you have to please everyone even if it goes against your personal believes" meaning more idealistic woke BS movies on the horizon. that looks like she's on top of the female filmmakers food chain now, only just turned 40 this year lool!

I hold movies to a certain standard and I can't genuinely name 10 really good movies from this year that i would say were really good or measured up to that standard and we are in freaking November!!. I don't buy the talk that the strike affected the industry cuz lets be sincere and serious, only DUNE 2 was the only potential really serious movie on paper that the strike affected, if we are looking at things holistically. Movies used to be my perfect gateway but these days i could go days without seeing a flick and i wouldn't flinch, because each time i find the time to see one, it seems like a chore already, playing russian roulette to see the one that will suck less, even the indie "A24" esque ones that you would trust to deliver don dey get K leg. The really good movies i saw this year were from way way back and that says alot.

I can vouch confidently for music, movies and series and thier undeniably decaying quality but i can't say same for other media forms tho since they aren't my forte because it seems my anime guys here are still eating good on a steady.

Well, I coped "The Killer" and Oppenheimer, before i left for a trip but unfortunately for me, i took only the work laptop 😩 and left the entertainment PC at home, thinking i would need to be settled in the comfort of my home to enjoy these 2 on the best platform but e be like say with reviews like this, na to watch this "The Killer" now and get it over with, because" it is the hope that kills" 😒

Bruv, you're not wrong. I saw Hideo Kojima's review of "The Killer" this morning after my review around 1am or 2am sha, and I nearly slapped that man for the nonsense high praise he was dishing as if it was a masterpiece. With the review I just felt dude was just praising his peer just like others are doing. But the feedback I've been seeing from fans is pretty fvvking mixed and "The Killer" isn't even in anyone's Top 5-7 Fincher films.

I was massively fvvking disappointed. The thing pain me seh. Na like two days I use finish am sef, cos I slept off the first day in less than 25mins.

I've never had the guts to sleep through a Fincher film before. Zodiac and Curios Case of Benjamin Button that I thought I would sleep then based on massive sleep deprivation during that period sef, the storytelling, acting, pacing and dialogue choke me I no fit blink. Mank wey na premium black and white with lengthy talk and dialogue sef na the best piece of black and white looking shït I've ever seen.

Just like you said it's inorganic cos it's very opposite from what fans are saying versus industry professionals. The few fans who are giving the movie high praise and around 8/10 aren't even enmeshed in Fincher's work so it might seem pretty good if you ain't seen enough of what Fincher can do to a story.
Fincher filmography is so fvvking good I struggle everyday to name my best 3 movies from him cos na as spirit leads I dey choose at times cos they were all fvvking Masterpieces and could easily topple each other.
I don't think I've ever rated a Fincher film below 8.5 sef. I'll dare say all the ones I've watched which I'm very sure of (asides Alien 3 since it's very long I watched and I can't remember) are around a 9/10 upwards.
I'm not so pissed at him sef cos his filmography is too GOATED I've been expecting a rare L. Cos that guy filmography dey always shock me. In recent months sef I've always rated him higher than Nolan or Scorcese and Ridley Scott sef when Twitter polls comes out. Somehow, deep down, I knew before watching it, this was going to have a gulf in quality compared to his previous works but I didn't expect the gap to be this wide.

Normally I would arguing with you that cinema ain't dead this year, but man, holy fvvk I'm struggling to see top tier best movies from this year. I'm yet to see a top 10 movie this year that could challenge for Oscar consideration.

The few movies which I consider the best so far I've watched this year are from niche distributors. Tetris , Air and Blackberry. And most likely none of this movies are getting into the awards competition since they've been overshadowed.

I still see Killers of The Flower Moon hype every two days if not everyday when I stay long enough on Twitter. Why you feel the hype has died down is most likely cos of its tame box office performance. That's what battered fans down. And there's always the MCU type of fans who are more than ready to put it down because of its BO.
I'm not in doubt of KOTFM quality at all...cos I already feel it even from the trailer it'd be a thrilling ride especially with that mad cast.

Oppenheimer is very much in the chat cos it was and is a financial and critical success and the Barbenheimmer mania ensures it would be pushed all through the awards season judging by how "organic" the chatter has been.
Sure, Barbie isn't supposed to be in Oscars Best shout for the main categories except Best Score. For the music related categories I very much feel it's more than capable with Score, Best Song etc.

Still, even with all this I believe the story WILL change soon by November when we might have access to most of the awards contenders. This year's lineup is pretty strong but the thing is everyone all left out the best movies for last. The studios are to be blamed for this one. All the top tier Oscar films was picked out for October to December release.

There's at least 10 to 12 movies with serious Best shouts in the top 7 categories this year, so I'm more optimistic. Only issue is why we'd have to wait till the last 3 months of the year to actually enjoy PEAK storytelling.

I'm still very confident of:

Poor Things, Napoleon, Anatomy of a Fall, Saltburn, KOTFM, The Color Purple, Rustin etc.
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by abduleez1(m): 9:39am On Nov 13, 2023
I'd easily say Gone Girl but I very much enjoyed Mank.

The Killer doesn't come close to Amy of Fincher's filmography I've watched.

At Oyaskii, did you hear of the news few months ago about A24 now pivoting to start producing more general 4 quadrant crowd pleasers movies??

I've forgotten which movie A24 recently released this year that almost ended them and now they would need to start producing normie movies if they wish to remain on business.

Really?? I didn't see the hype past 2 weeks of it's release, and i am fully immersed in film twitter. I definitely saw one or 2 complaints about it been too overbloated and felt "too drawn out", and i tend to believe it because "The Irishman" was like that with that ridiculous runtime. Well i guess, we will have to find out and i have seen enough movies to know a mad cast doesn't necessarily translate to final on screen quality but i have high hopes for this still and we just have to wait to find out.

I had no doubt my man Christopher Nolan cooked with Oppenhemier cuz he is one of the few directors that stay outside of this "bubble" of experimenting with genres too much, he knows his niche and just sticks to it plus he carefully chooses his project so the chances for a miss are almost near zero. Only "Tenet" seemed like a "L" to the general populace, in his filmography but not me tho, an absolute top tier flick that.

Still, even with all this I believe the story WILL change soon by November when we might have access to most of the awards contenders. Out of the list you mentioned and the said anticipated flicks coming out this last days of the year, Only Anatomy of a Fall and Napoleon are the ones i am holding out hope for tbh. Shame France opted not to push Anatomy of a fall for Oscar, so the chances of that are slime considering it is a foreign language film. Yorgos Lanthimos has burnt me enough times not to expect too much from "Poor things", I am genuinely tired of a racial themed flick at this point so i may skip Rustin plus the only reason it is getting buzz because the character is an lgtv folk. Finally Saltburn looks like those erotic euphoria esque flicks we have seen before with maybe a little twist, i genuinely didn't see anything jaw dropping in the trailer.

lmaoo saw it a while back. I knew, the A24, the people's filmmakers that doesn't care about money gimmick wasn't going to last 😩.

They will cook a very fine movie and make like 30k dolls on it but with Oscar shout tho and in the same world, they are seeing bare a$s pop corn flicks like"Captain Marvel" with near zero replay value and no chance in hell of an oscar norm, let alone winning, grossing over a 1bn dolls.

This model was likely going to get them bankrupt and sadly we live in a very capitalist society and no matter what some air heads will tell you, You actually need money and very plenty of it to survive 😭.

So it is long overdue, i just pray the deep in quality isn't much as they try to chase the bag 💰

I just remembered the movie.... Funny it's BEAU IS AFRAID. grin grin A24 spent like $50mn on that film and it was an epic flop.

I'm not too concerned about their quality dropping too far off at the moment. They said they were still going to keep producing weird non-conformant films that it's known for. Just that now they'll also co-produce general purpose films that the general public can easily consume.

The bolded is why I'm so glad The shitty Marvels sequel is flopping real hard at the box office. Even worse than the Flash sef. grin grin
That film was basically carried by Endgame hype with little to nothing to show for it and that $1bn was so painful. MCU really had a way of brainwashing people with marketing back then.

Remember those days when we said Marvel won't get away with the shït they did eventually and peeps over here were thinking it's "bad belle" or pained DC fans. Now everybody eyes don clear.
Their too much content with weak storytelling and their generic films looking all the same has tainted the genre and everybody is suffering for it.

Sure, fantastic cast doesn't guarantee a great film....still I have no doubt in Scorcese. The few things j could gleen from the trailer assures me I'll have a ride watching it.

Anatomy of a Fall is already out for downloads. I'm just not prepped for it yet. And why the fvvk France refused to promote it as their flagship International submission?? Either ways I'm hearing Sandra Hüller might be up for some best actress shout whether the film fails for Best Picture nods or not. There's other awards too, if it misses Oscar it can push for the Globes and if successful can boast of something at least.

Well, I just put up Rustin there just to add to the numbers and because of the hype for Colman Domingo I'm seeing. And you might be right, it might just be racial and LGTV motivated. I'm just curious on the movie to see what the hype is all about.

As for Saltburn, the cast and the music is the biggest thing propping me up with the movie from what I saw in the trailer. The trailer caught my fancy and sings to me.

It's a generic hitman movie that tries to appear deep and artsy but only ended up becoming neither deep and more boring than your typical hitman movie.

Lol, the man is a penny-pincher, so those tax write-offs at least brings money the government will pay for it not releasing it. They got $30mn for the film.

But what I've noticed is that these projects are inherited projects from Jason Kilar.

James Gunn, Mike De Luca and Pamela Abdy most likely have a hand in the movie being brought back from the chopping block.

Epic movies have been a dying subgenre especially in the past decade that it was totally ignored.

Back in the days, we had 300, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven....etc.

At least we've gotten the Woman King and upcoming Napoleon in this past two years.

The part 1/ episode 1 of this left things on a knife edge as it ended abruptly just as things were about to get cooking. I had some expectations for the concluding part, and i was left almost satisfied.

"The Origin" really began in this installment, and the writers showed great dexterity in unraveling why and how "Madam Koi Koi" came to be and i have to applaud the layers and texture they added, they told the origin, going through 3 different timeline without missing a beat and i must say they did brilliantly.

But, again, some part went flat and they more or less looked like fillers, and i personally didn't see the reason they needed to split this into 2 parts, as a one part, 2hr: 30mins runtime would have sufficed. There was also some part of the plot lines that defied logic but i guess that is expected when dealing with mysticism and spiritualism.

I expected more horror too and i purposely saw this at the dead of the night to see if they could scare me, but it was still the make up gimmick albeit the eerie soundtrack added a little air of suspense and dread.

The production value was fantastic and the cinematography was top work. After sticking a wobbly landing, they then tried to insert a MCU esque post credit scene with the caption "Madam Koi Koi has returned", and i am like, there is absolutely no reason to make any sequel to this expect it is in another universe with a different story all together.

6/10.

Final rating for the entire thing
6.5/10.
