A Kano based Hausa musician, Abdul Kamal has sued BBC Hausa Service for using his sound track in their popular program “Daga Bakin Mai Ita’” without his consent.

Counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Bashir Ibrahim Umar told the court that the use of the sound track of his client without his consent by the BBC will diminish the future career of his client.

“As an upcoming musician, this will destroy his career as some people may think he (my client) is using the BBC’s track for cheap popularity”.

He added that “We want the court to make the BBC to pay him the sum of N120m as damages.”

Barrister Bashir pleaded with the court to restrain the defendant from continuous use of the track pending final determination of the case by the court.

In his response, counsel to BBC, Barrister Shakirudden Mosobalage told the court that his client bought the sound track from one company in Abuja.

He also prayed the court to give them time to be able to present some documents to support their argument.

His plea was later granted by the court.

The Presiding judge, Justice N.M. Inusa adjourned the case to 12th December, 2023 for further mention.

This complicated. Musicians spoilt the market for themselves by tipping DJs and media houses to play their songs. The supposed seller pays the supposed buyer just to fake streaming. The bribery turned the entertainment world upside-down as stations that should pay for using songs now think using the songs is a favour to artistes.

But what is the English translation of "Daga Bakin Mai Ita"? Is the meaning derogatory?
