I actually know what it means to not have at all; so when people genuinely do not have and they reach out to me, I always try to help with the little I can. When it involves kids it even gets me more concerned

When they send text I will then now decide whether I want to call the person back or finish our conversation via text messaging. It usually saves me a lot of stress.

I have been a victim to that several time. A childhood friend once hit me with this. In this case, he said his kid was at the point of dead in the hospital. He needs financial assistance. I requested for his account and sent him money instantly. He called back the next day to appreciate me. I thanked God and thought that was it. After like 5days, he called again, requesting for money to buy food stuffs. I jejely told him that he have to look else where for assistance as well. His elder bro is in abroad. He has rich cousins who he can reach out to as well. He continued with the disturbance for long but I never responded again. This particular guy continued to breed like pig. His wife gave birth this year again...now he has about 5 or 6kids. He is always hitting me up on whatsapp and I have ignored all.

SMS isn't it for me cos you can't write properly on it. You can't paragraph your text cleanly. And I think it has a limit to the number of alphabets/words you can send at once.

You can always use truecaller in such instances. I try not to pick numbers not saved on my phone till truecaller identifies the number.

I learnt this useful lesson in my university days.

Constant generosity breeds entitlement. Entitlement breeds resentment. Resentment destroys relationships.

I had a good friend in uni who I was always helping out because he was from a very underprivileged background.
I helped him in different ways, financially, materially and otherwise. At first I didn't put much thought into this because he had a very nice personality and we shared common interests, being a fellow atheist and same department and all, making for a good companion and all. We were good for a while until I started noticing that he started becoming angry when I told him no to certain things.

Something memorable I remember occuring was him feeling entitled to me dashing him my shirt. He used to borrow my clothes sometimes and he liked them, there was a particular shirt which he liked wearing which made me use it less and less even though I liked it, and one day he asked me to just dash him the shirt. I told him no and he actually got angry, asking me why I can't just give him even though I can easily buy another one. He actually believed firmly that because I could buy another and he couldn't. I should ACTUALLY dash him that shirt and we actually exchanged words over this. That made me realise how entitled he had become to my stuff and when I actually started clawing back and recovering things I had given to him previously, that broke the friendship for a long while.

What I do now is that when I'm actually helping people, I flat out tell them that they shouldn't get used to this. It's not a recurring something. Even when I still give them much later, I make it a solid point for them to know it won't be constant and they must do well to remember this one I'm doing now when I say no in the future. That has helped me a very great deal.

The key is voicing out your mind from the onset. Set their expectations straight.
