Kano Appeal Court Verdict: NNPP Heads To Supreme Court by Thonyb2: 6:57am On Nov 19, 2023
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) said on Saturday it has concluded plans to appeal the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which overturned the victory of Governor Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.

.ng recalls that the Appeal Court nullified the election of the governor on Friday, saying he was not qualified to contest the March 18 poll.

According to the court, Governor Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP when the election was conducted.

Speaking on the Appeal Court ruling, Alhaji Abba Ali, the acting national chairman of NNPP, told journalists at a news conference on Saturday in Abuja that the ruling that Yusuf was not a member of the party was a mischief.

Ali said that the judgement was a miscarriage of justice, saying that Yusuf was given a popular mandate by the people of Kano State.

He said the party had already briefed its lawyers on the issue.

“Believing in the credibility of the judiciary and its ability to correct any error of judgement by the lower court, our party approached the Court of Appeal and prayed the appellate court to set aside the unjust ruling of the lower court.

“To our greatest shock and consternation, the Court of Appeal on Friday, Nov. 17, delivered a convoluted judgement that was anchored around their erroneous belief that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP,” he said.

He wondered how Yusuf could have been successfully nominated on the INEC portal if his name was not submitted with the NNPP membership card

The judgement is totally a miscarriage of justice because i dont know what concern APC and Gawuna with NNPP membership.

I thought Supreme court said one party can not meddle in the affairs of other political party or they want to change their ruling to favour APC again as usual.

IT'S A WASTE OF TIME. THEY WILL LOSE BIG TIME. I WANT TO BELIEVE THEY ARE HEADING FOR SUPREME COURT JUST TO SAVE FACE. It's just too obvious they made two big mistakes.
Supreme court can never overlook those two errors.

it is about the Nigerian law and not about belonging to that particular party. Nigerian law said you must belong to a particular part before you can contest for any political position.
Don't also forget that, the second reason the court sack the NNPP governor is even more huge than the first. Over 160k votes of NNPP votes has been removed because they where not sign nor stamped by Inec and counted for only NNPP candidate which clearly means rigging of that election. After removal of those vote, he came second position.

The situation here is different. This is not an intra-party affair. It's about the law, and that makes it a public matter.

The Electoral law specifically requires that a party's candidate for an election must be a registered member of the party. The Appeal court has concluded that the NNPP Governor was not a registered member of the party as of the date of the election.

Accordingly, he did not qualify to contest the election and so cannot be a Governor.

APC is entitled to raise the matter before the court.

The man has a mountain to climb at the Supreme Court.

I'm interested in seeing how Appeal Court arrived at the non-member status of Abba Yusuf given that he's known to have joined NNPP since March 2022. Fergie001 do you have a copy of the judgement?

From what I understand, the register of members submitted to INEC by NNPP didn't have the man's name.

That's fait accompli.

don’t discredit NIGERIA JUDICIARY for their wrongdoing , the over 160k votes that has no INEC signatures and stamp is that judiciary or the INEC party registration list submitted by NNPP that he’s name was not among is judicial system wrongdoing.

Nigeria judiciary

The appeal court cannot override or ignore the law.

The law says candidates must be registered members of a political party. Proof of membership is taken from the register of members that a party submits to INEC shortly before the election.

The man's name was not in NNPP's register.

What do you expect the court to do. Ignore the law?

The Kano governor just wants to remain in office until the Supreme Court gives its verdict. Thatt's better than leaving right now.

Indeed it is. But I wonder how APC got to know that. APC must have an insider in INEC because as far as is in the public, the guy joined NNPP since March 2022 and the party register for all parties was submitted much later
