The landlord first breached the terms of the contract by refusing to refund her caution fee.

Live there rent-free? Does the story say that? I think this is about a small-minded person doing damage as "pay back" to a landlord who refused to refund her caution deposit (as Lagos landlords, the greedy lot that many of them are, usually do).

In my previous apartment, I went above and beyond to maintain and even improve its condition. I repainted, repaired minor damages, and upgraded the lighting fixtures to better ones that suited my taste. Despite these efforts and living there for nearly two years, my landlord refused to return my caution payment of 150k when I moved out. This was particularly unjust since I left the apartment in a better state than when I moved in, with high-quality fittings.

I completely empathize with the woman's actions in a similar situation. Although I didn't resort to damaging the property like she did, her actions seem justified given the circumstances.

Also, a side note on landlords' overreach: mine tried to claim my chandelier, which I had brought from my previous residence. Thankfully, I had pictures as proof of ownership.

In as much as what she did is wrong I can also condem the action of the landlord for not returning her caution fee, let’s be realistic in our thinking the money deposited is for the person to maintain his or her stay in the house without destroying things when the landlord has checked nothing spoil then it’s okay to return such money without being greedy, but in this country? Oga landlord, well done. Caution deposit ought to be refunded - if there is no significant structural damage CAUSED BY THE TENANT. Normal wear and tear does not count, as that is expected.

She could be sued for willful destruction of properties
