The yorubas used to be a respectful tribe. Why the insults on the Oba of Benin for reciting a version of history? Where are these insultive animals from? Tomorrow you accuse igbo of kicking their fathers. Shameless lots. |

killsmith:It pains me so much to see an IPOBidient like this making so much sense but I guess there's always a first time. Yorùbá pipo we dey drag Ọba (gha tọ kpere bàbà) over dis mata abeg máke una reason am, e don do. Soon I will have to start giving IPOBidients 'likes', biko how did we get to this stage where IPOBidients are now being sensible? Surely we prefer them being bitter, empty headed and shamelessly spiteful simply because President Tinubu won the Gold medal while Peter Obi took bronze in the Presidential electoral race. |

Biodun556:@Biodun556, You don't have to insult the Oba of Benin or call him a nuisance. Just make your clear corrections and move on. He (Oba of Benin) will learn the facts if he is corrected with love. As a career diplomat himself, he will realize his errors. Nobody can take Eko (or the larger Lagos State) away from the indigenous Awori-Yorubas, the Ijebu-Yorubas, and the Ogus. Period. The Ooni of Ife too has committed a few glaring historical blunders in the past. They need a team of royal advisers/historians to guide them on what to say before speaking. The Royal families in Europe invest in advisers who teach them about history and politics. The then Prince Charles (now King Charles of England) visited Lagos and Nigeria before he became King, and he spoke Nigerian pidgin English at an event to welcome him on Ikoyi Island in Lagos State. He was able to do that because he had a team of advisers who tutored him on what to say which would be socially acceptable to those he came to see in Nigeria. Cheers! |

Shut up all of you, it's known history that Benin opened up Lagos, secured it and trade flourished, 400 years ago.

Oba of Benin doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Awori tribes are the tribes that establish Lagos and Awori tribes are from Ile Ife origin |

Biodun556:The Balogun of Eko, Abisoye Oyeyemi Oshodi himself (who is of Yoruba-Tapa or Yoruba-Nupe ancestry) got his history wrong towards the end of the video. The arrival of Tapas was in the early 1800s and his ancestor was a Tapa (Nupe) Prince whose town was raided by the Fulanis who killed his parents and sold him into slavery in the 1800s. While he was about to be taken into a Portuguese slave ship on arrival on Eko Island (which was one of the biggest slave ports in West Africa besides the other notorious one at Whydah in Benin Republic), he ran away into the palace of Oba Esinlokun (Oba Kosoko's father) for safety. Ifa divination was consulted and through the Ifa priest, Ifa instructed that the young Tapa Prince should be left alone and he was incorporated into the palace community and given the name Oshodi (meaning a palace staff). That young Tapa boy became known as Balogun Oshodi Tapa and their lineage is now of Yoruba ethnicity. For those who don't know, Tapa is the Yoruba name for Nupes. Nupes have always been part of Yoruba history during the Oyo Empire, parts of the Tapa and Bariba areas especially in the current Kwara State were militarily conquered and incorporated into the Oyo Empire which stretched right up to the Atakpame region which is the current Yoruba-speaking part of the Republic of Togo. Sango's mother was a Tapa woman while his father was Oranmiyan. XAUBulls:God will bless you with this your response, I don't understand the quick propensity by some to insult elderly people, this is certainly not a Yoruba trait. I can only assume some IPOBidients are masquerading as Yoruba or there is a clear lack of home training. We don't even know the context The Ọba (gha tọ kpere Baba) said it, he might have being joking with his gracious hosts. Hopefully some of these silly youngsters come back to their senses quickly. |

aswani:@Aswani, Very well said my brother. Thank you. There are many fake monikers on NL, Facebook, X, and other platforms that are used to instigate hate speeches and for trolling. The Supermods too have to be more intentional in dealing with these fake NL accounts. I was initially embarrassed reading Biodun's outburst. I guess it had to do with the accumulated annoyance with the way some Ibo irredentists have relentlessly defamed and falsified information about Yorubas for many decades, claiming falsely that Chief Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, drank rat poison to kill himself as a result of a failed coup against IBB. As a witness to the events of that period when Awolowo passed on, NOTHING of such happened in 1987! Awolowo died peacefully and was given a national burial with eulogies from IBB and many more prominent folks. Some of the younger generation of Yorubas have to be very careful NOT to bring themselves to the level of the known ethnic bigots here on NL and elsewhere who we have always condemned for relentlessly insulting other ethnicities and have refused to stop! Even early this year, one of these Ibo Ipob members made two different viral videos where he viciously insulted the Oba of Benin and Edo youths because of the 2023 elections and he refused to apologize after Edo and Delta State indigenes warned and told him to apologize. I have those two irresponsible videos on my mobile device. The Oba of Benin's Lagos comment was an error of judgement and not the norm. I sort of liked the respectful video rebuttal by Balogun of Eko, Oyeyemi Oshodi as well who himself is Yoruba of Tapa lineage (A Yoruba-Nupe lineage) and a direct descendant of Balogun Oshodi Tapa who was a Tapa Prince that was captured by Fulanis, and they killed his parents in the early 1800s and sold him into slavery. As he was about to be put on board the Portuguese slave ship on Lagos (Eko) Island which was a major slave port, he ran into the palace of Oba Esinlokun (Oba Kosoko's father) and Ifa divination ordered for his release, and he became a part of the palace workers taking care of the needs of the Oba's wives (an Oshodi) and the rest is history! https://asirimagazine.com/en/lagososhodi-tapa-and-inverted-slaves-response-to-oshodi-tapa-family/ Aside from some outrightly false posts on Lagos and Ife history that I have read on Wikipedia and some Edo blogs, the Bini or entire Edo State folks do NOT cast relentless aspersions on Yorubas online and offline, so, there's NO need for anyone to insult the Oba of Benin who himself said on the day he was coronated as an Oba... clearly affirmed in the speech he read that his ancestor, Oranmiyan was the FIRST Oba of Benin (although he didn't stay long and returned to Ife with some of his entourage). Oranmiyan had a son by a Bini woman of noble family heritage. The son grew up and later became the SECOND Oba of Benin. The historical links between Yorubaland, the Binis, and Itsekiris cannot be erased. Even in Ife, there is a grove called "Orun Oba Ado" where the heads of "every third" Oba of Benin was usually buried to signify the paternal lineage of the Oba of the Bini, while the other body part without the head was usually buried in Benin which is the maternal side. The same thing happened in Lagos Island where the heads of Elekos where buried in Lagos and bodies were buried in Benin to symbolize the paternal and maternal lineages. Thanks for you positive feedback here. All the best. |
