What happened is that Benin would have been another Warri, Atakpame or Ugbodu and etc who are Yoruba speakers hemmed in by non Yoruba speakers if not that the Edo people that originally owned the land overwhelmed the city after the decline of the empire and turned it into an Edo city and that was late in the nineteenth century.
