Obasanjo Warns Against Opening Nigeria Boarder For Poultry Importation.

Following the removal of forex ban on the importation of poultry products and 42 other items, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned against opening Nigerian boarder for importation of the product into Nigeria.

Obasanjo, who was the grand patron of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) while speaking virtually at the second summit of the association yesterday in Abuja, harped on the need for government to support the industry and not open the market for others to dump their poultry products in the country.

Obasanjo said: “When you talk of poverty eradication, wealth creation or employment generation, poultry is one of the best that you can go into either at Small, Medium or large resources level, moreso, the market is at the door step.

“When the poultry industry is thriving, it will trickle down the value chain including maize and soybean farmers and pharmaceutical companies producing drugs for the birds will also benefit.”

The former Head of State stressed the need for the government and private sector to pay attention to the poultry industry given its importance to provide job opportunities, food and nutrition security.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Sabi Abdullahi, in his remarks, revealed that the per capita poultry consumption is 1.75 kg which falls below the 6.2 kg Africa average, adding that the annual consumption of poultry meat in Nigeria is put at 1,500,000 MT and production output is just about 55 per cent of consumption, estimated at 826,902.42 MT.

This he said, has left a huge deficit of 45 per cent, which is about 675,000 MT. He lamented that the deficit was unfortunately met through smuggling of poultry and poultry products which most of the times, are unwholesome, with its attendant negative effects on the citizen, industry and the economy.

To save the poultry industry from imminent collapse, he revealed that the government is putting in place measures to meet up with requests Poultry farmers including the possibility of import duty waiver, VAT exemption on the importation of feed grade maize and soya-bean as well as on the issue of the recent lifting of the forex restriction on importation of poultry and poultry products.

He however tasked the Research Institute to focus efforts on coming up with maize varieties for livestock feed only to reduce the demand pressure on the ordinary maize used for food and other purposes by human.

The President of Poultry Association of Nigeria, Chief Sunday Ezeobiora, while highlighting the challenges bedeviling the sector, regretted that Nigeria banks are not willing to provide the with finance saying they are waiting for the take off of the Nigeria Agricultural Development Fund, with the hope that when the fund take-off it will not toe the line of the Anchor borrowers Scheme and the interest rate will not go beyond four per cent.

The association also called on the government to immediately halt exportation of Soya beans and maize, hinting that some exporters are at the verge of exporting the available grains. He appealed to the government to urgently attend to their request so that the industry does not collapse.

Obasanjo should shut up
They leave office and start talking as if they were never there

Is time we unite against our politicians
Because they have united against us

If you criticise Jonathan, Buhari and now you no longer want to criticise tinubu because of tribalism and religion sentiments may you and your children know no peace
If you were gingered in 2012 protest when Jonathan removed subsidy and you were part of the protest but now you suddenly lost your voice for a protest when the suffering under tinubu is getting worse may you and children know no peace

urchins and sycophants that use slap to greet their parents will come and insult him.

Obasanjo is not the only one that rears chicken, there are thousands of nigerians including graduates without jobs that have and intending to venture into the poultry business.
besides did they use importation to swear for these bereft leaders ,how about exportation of the poultry products to gain foreign exchange instead relying heavily on borrowing loans.

Na because obasanjo has money to buy ordinary chicken for 25k he open mouth waaaa dey yarn dust.
They should open the border for foods to come into Nigeria. Local productions is not helping, Nigerians are greedy bastards that like inflicting prices at slightest opportunities. Our only saving grace is food importation from neighbouring country's. Our farmers can go to hell with their food.
How can I be using all my 250k salary only on foods. Na only foods I come this life come chop? I no go buid house?;

I agree instead allow importation of maize and soybeans to bring price of poultry down

The poultry industry is more economically viable and has higher potential than the maize and soy farming industry

The farmers of maize and soy can easily transition to cassava, millet and others with little or no changes

The poultry industry has potential slot of potential... We can potential produce at substantially lower price we can the develop enough comparative advantage that we can export to Europe and America... There by offsetting the import of maize and soy

A full chicken cost about $4 in the us and £3 in Europe... I believe we can produce same for $2 if my analysis is correct

So yes it's wise to ban chicken import instead open border to cheap maize and soy import

I rest my case
