This Falsehood That Bishop Ajayi-crowther Wrote A Book In Igbo by gidgiddy: 4:14pm On Dec 13, 2023
People have been carrying this falsehood about that Bishop Ajayi-Crowther authored the first ever book in the Igbo language. I have read Bishop Ajayi-Crowther's narrative sojourn to Igbo land, Onitsha to be specific. Bishop Ajayi-Crowther visited Igbo land twice, and on both occasions, he spent less than a week. So where exactly did Bishop Ajayi-Crowther learn Igbo enough to be proficient enough to write a book in Igbo?

Igbo language is notoriously difficult to learn, and unless you have Igbo parents, or lived amongst Igbos, the chances of you being fluent in the language is next to zero

But lets forget where Ajayi-Crowther learnt Igbo, and turn to the book its self. The only thing people have managed to show us about this book is a preface titled "Isoama Ibo Primer" and "Vocabulary of the Ibo Language". Isoama means nothing in the Igbo language (unless he meant Isuama). How does a one page preface become a book?

If anyone claims that Ajayi-Crowther wrote a book in Igbo, show us the book! Show us the pages! Tell us what was written in the book. A one page preface written in English language is no book, let alone an Igbo book

If nobody can show us pages of this so called book, or tell what was written in it, then there is no book but a book of lies

They're coming for you

How dare you destroy one of the delusions keeping them going?

Like you said Igbo is by far very hard to learn due it's huge diversity of dialects writting forms and intonations and all the kpọm elu and kpọm ala . Igbo has 36 alphabets that larger than any major language in Nigeria.

Due to the nature of my trade and customer networks I have been able to learn Hausa fluently and Yoruba too due to my knowledge in Yoruba I also hear little igala anyone who speaks Yoruba won't have problem understanding a huge part of igala language

That can't be said about Igbo language. There are just huge variations of saying one thing in Igbo

According to my brother who did project on researching the dynamics of Igbo language . While he was doing his project we had a conversation where he told me that during his project with some other coursemates about igbo language they discovered that Igbo dialect changes every 10km on average some are just 1km there is slight change

I just laughed when I heard the lies about him writting a book in Igbo

According to the web search results, Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther did write an Igbo book in 1857.
The book was called **Isoama-Ibo: A Primer** and it was the first book in Igbo language ever published¹.
The book had 17 pages, with the Igbo alphabet, words, phrases, sentence patterns, the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, and translations of the first chapters of Matthew's Gospel².
Crowther was a missionary linguist who learned Igbo from Simon Jonas, an Igbo man who came from emancipated slave families who settled in Freetown². Crowther also wrote a vocabulary of the Ibo language in 1882, which was the first comprehensive dictionary in Igbo².

Crowther was a descendant of King Abiodun, an Alaafin of the Oyo Empire, and he was also a patriot who advocated for African evangelization and economic development³⁴. He was the grandfather of Herbert Macaulay, the founder of Nigeria's first political party².

The proof is that we've seen all his works. And Thier pages

Why is the so called isoama (which actually means nothing in Igbo ) does not have pages?

All his books have soft copies and we've seen thier pages but the so called ibo vocabulary pages isn't available anywhere.

Someone who barely spent a month in SE is now writting vocabularies

The headings of his book "isoama" Ibo means nothing in Igbo language
