Dpharisee:In other countries that seek population growth, resources are available to support the needed additional population. The extra population will also be trained optimally to be an asset cultivated specifically to fill specific void in society. In Nigeria, the population far outstrip the resources available to look after our over 200 million people and counting. I have personally advocated, even since Buhari became President, the need to aggressively sensitize Nigerians about family planning and contraception so that many do not keep having children they cannot fend for who will then be doomed to be future menaces to society because of lack of education and employable skills. We are killing our nation with an overpopulation of human being who are a net deficit to Nigeria and a drain on scarce resources. Nations become great because of good human, geographical, agricultural and material resources. Only adequate Human Resources can bring the best out of the other assets. Sadly, majority of our Human Resources were always going to end up worthless and sub-par. That is the ugly truth many do not want to accept in a nation where both Moslems and Christians believe children are “a gift from god” without understanding it is also very cruel and ungodly to bring a child into the world to suffer and then become an unproductive, inadequate, needy, unfulfilled and unhappy adult. I don’t know how many of us are happy to see a mother in the street with her three kids running around in traffic begging for money while she breastfed twins even too young to walk. Just depressing that the worst , most hopeless and most backward practices of humanity is always to be seen in Nigeria in abundance. |

Dreamhighnow:What does it profit you to be so dishonest because of hatred of others along political, religious and sectional lines? What is the lie in the claim our population is unsustainably and unproductively too much? Do you not walk the streets of Nigeria? Or You live on Mars not to see the number of destitutes on our streets? What does the APC or any Party have to do with an illiterate couple, with no employable skills, having 6 children they then send into traffic everywhere to beg? Are those kids, missing out on education and invariably growing up on the streets, not automatically condemned to become armed robbers, bandits, terrorist, Cultist and general menaces to society of tomorrow? Abi Tinubu should develop millions of clones of himself so he can be present in every nook and corner to prevent grown adults from having irresponsible sex that leads to children they cannot raise? Is turning every Nigerian adult to a child, and absolving them of adult responsibility just so you can rant at leaders, sensible at all? Why is it so difficult for some of you to rise above petty sentiments to look at issues dispassionately like productive Human Resources of other nations can do? You even deny what a kid can admit just to rant at APC. Do you not understand the more adult Nigeria has who can take a solution-driven approach to problem the better for our nation? Our detrimentally large population is a big problem every sensible adult Nigerian must face and play their part to alleviate. Starting with those having kids irresponsibly like Rabbits when they have no hope at all of raising those kids optimally. |

TopBanter:Oga population is not excuse to deliver good governance. Infact our population should be our strength especially that even God bless us with many mineral resources But your political gods keep looting the resources heavily but keep looking for what and who to blame for their woeful performance( they never have the intention of performing but just to come and loot their own) |

Typical of Nigerians not taking responsibility. Keep blaming the government for the generational poverty you guys create for yourselves. Didn't one woman in Edo last month with nine children committed suicide? The sad thing is there will be more until you lots start taking responsibility for your actions. Argue all you want, population is never a blessing but a curse. It is no coincidence that the countries with the highest standard of living, that are the safest, are those with population of ten million or less. |

Dreamhighnow:Look, this is not about using population as excuses for anything. Nigeria has a large population that is near worthless with majority of the fault due to irresponsible choices adult make. Of course we should still task leaders to lead well but that should not detract from the reality of the negative long term impact of too many Nigerian adults having too many kids than they can raise optimally to becoming productive and self-sufficient adult. A family with an illiterate mother and father , who both have little skills for anything more than menial jobs, will irresponsibly give birth to six kids they will send out to beg in the streets when those kids should be attending school. Is that not perpetuating generational poverty in that family that should appreciate the reality of Nigeria yet still went on to have six kids? Would it not be better if those adult use their commonsense and foresight to settle on having one kid they can manage to raise well who may then help to elevate that family out of poverty by becoming a skilled professional? What do those sort of considerations have to do with leadership rather than irresponsible choices adults make? The large population of unskilled illiterates Nigeria has is not to be blamed on the government alone. Look at the North where the people constitute 87% of the most poverty-stricken Nigerians alive yet some families there keep having 10 kids or more. Are you going to argue that is the fault of the Government as well and that grown adults don’t have the commonsense to appreciate it is wrong to bring into the world children you will be highly unlikely to take care of properly? |

sammiewrite:Precisely. They will rush to praise everything about China, to mock Nigeria as worthless, but they forget or are ignorant of the fact that same China introduced a policy of limiting the number of children a family could have to one in the past. This was at a time when the nation realized that unchecked population growth, if allowed to continue, was going to be a serious threat to the socio-economic wellbeing of China. I only blame Nigerian leaders for never having the will and bravery to confront the problem because of fear of election vote-loss backlash from Nigerians. How many know, for example, that APC tested the water, under Buhari, by announcing a plan to initiate family planning as a way to curb Nigeria’s detrimental population growth, mainly aided by the irresponsible choices Nigerian adults were making? The Buhari government had to do a quick climbdown and deny knowledge of the policy when the vehement criticism of it frightened the government who realized the APC will suffer at the next election polls. Imagine a catch 22 situation where unreasonable people do not want to do the right thing and government, too focused on their own political fortunes, deliberately refraining from intervening in the interest of what is best for Nigeria. |

Lastmankc: ![]() Don't mind them. They always love to have children until the responsibility falls on them when the husband, the breadwinner suddenly dies. A neighbor's wife who always say she likes kids after having 4, still thinking of having the 5th own suddenly became worried and crying when she couldn't get her husband over the weekend on phone in Lagos. On Monday, she met my wife at the kid's school looking depressed and worried. When my wife asked, what is the problem? She said she has not been able to get her hubby for the past 2 days. That where will she start from with 4 kids? A house wife fah. That this is suffering oooo.. she can't even afford 1 out of the 4 kids school fees yet ready to heap another load of a kid on her hubby. She said she will take 2 to her sister in Lagos to stay with them while she manages with other 2. Now, my question is - why do you have such a stupid plan of putting your kids on another person to train? Don't you think the other person has his/her own plans too? How can a human be thinking like this? You quiet know you can't afford 4 kids, yet you are having them. No plans about job loss or death of spouse. Nothing yet they call themselves humans. Government must do everything for them. Their own is to just keep banging and producing more kids for the government to think about. The problem na the government own |

Instead of our huge population to rebuild the economy of Nigeria, the reverse is the case cos’ of the evil economic policies of our political figures in the government. At the end, it’s the same huge population that suffered for it. It’s very unfortunate seriously. |

TopBanter:...I wonder who liked your post four times. Population is a strength under normal circumstances. Our case is that of low productivity fuelled by unrealistic.dependence on natural resources. Those poor, large families in the north have food that's why they can reproduce in the first place and food takes as high as 60% of the average Nigerians earnings. Someone with 60% of needs met isn't the poorest of the poor among us. Let be honest. |
| Re: Population Outgrows Economy Amid Rising Dependants, Misery by CodeTemplar: 1:37am On Dec 16, 2023 |
TopBanter:I find that phrase of "unproductively too much" a paradox. If 1000 men produce N1000 of goods it is better than only 100 men producing at same rate. What we need is to make people more productive so that their efforts largely takes care of their needs unlike what we have where everyone looks up to resources to handle needs. It was this push to limit of resource that triggered printing of money to chase dwindling supplies and thus triggered inflation. Population only have to be more productive than destructive/consuming to be a blessing. |

CodeTemplar:What? !! Do you know what you are saying? 60% going to only food is dangerously terrible and wicked, a very barbaric condition. Though, You are absolutely right about the food being their sole need making them content enough to consider birthing children. |
