.....Loan Scheme For Nigerian Students

Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS) has invited the national coordinator of the Education Right Campaign (ERC), Hassan Taiwo Soweto, for holding a programme highlighting why the President Bola Tinubu-led government loan scheme was a scam.

The group had asserted that the loan scheme had not worked anywhere else, noting that it would only transform public education into a business and students into its customers.


In a publication titled, "Ten Reasons Why Tinubu's Students Loan is a Scam", the group had stated further that the scheme would only cater to a minority of the indigent student population.

The group, therefore, called on all Nigerian students and education workers to reject the student loan policy and join them to begin to fight for a cut in government profligacy to make the money available.

SaharaReporters learnt that the Director Of DSS in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State, one Paul Okilo called ERC coordinator, Hassan Taiwo Soweto, to inform him that his presence was needed at its office over the group’s stand on the loan scheme.

In a conversation between the two which was made available to SaharaReporters, Hassan was heard tackling the DSS for attending the group’s programme without any proper invitation.

“It's an invasion; we did not invite you, you don't have that type of right. This is democracy so you don't have that type of right to come to a programme uninvited and then to come there and you don't even introduce yourself. Do you know that you just came to spy on us? You just confirmed it. Clandestine surveillance; that's what you just did,”


Hassan told the DSS official.
While responding, the DSS said they took that step for security reasons.

The DSS official said, “No let me tell you something that you don't understand, anything happening within the nation or state that the DSS thinks might impinge on the security of the nation, it is our responsibility to checkmate it; so ours is to ensure that what you people are doing here to ensure that it is done in a conducive environment without any threat to law and order so when we observe that such kind of thing is going on without no briefing we now estivate ourselves out of it and watch from afar so even if we are there we are still there for your good.”

He added, “My calling you now is for us to pally whether it is an invasion or a spy anyway you want to call it. Ok let’s assume just like you said; we are coming uninvited. So it's not about spying you it's our own to ensure that things are done normally and what you people did normally was in order so there was no problem.”

What is DSS business with this ? Why intimidating citizens ?
If the purpose of the invitation is truly to understand why he he said it’s a scam , should it not be EFCC or the Ministry of Education that should be involved ?
