Anti-malarial Medicine Blocked My Hearing by Whizzdom(m): 8:36pm On Dec 21, 2023
On Tuesday (21-12-2023), I was having serious fever, so went to buy an over-the-counter malaria drug and one flu tablet. The lady chemist told me to use 4 tablets in the morning and 4 in the afternoon for the malaria drug, but for the Flu medicine, I should use 1 tablet in the morning and at night. I took 4 tablets in the afternoon that day. On the next day, which is Wednesday, I took 4 tablets making 8 tablets in total plus 1 Flu tablet, A few hours after I took that medicine, I felt a sharp pain in my left hear, after which the pain subsided.

I am Welder by profession, I went to work that same moment, at work, I was using a grinding machine to grind iron to make iron smooth, the machine makes noise, but this day, as I was grinding, I could feel something in my brain or inner ear bringing buzzing sound or noise into my ear, after grinding that iron, I couldn't ear anything, all I was hearing is just noise.

The next day, which is today Thursday, I could hear people speak but they have to be loud, and my ears can't tolerate noise at all.

To go hospital hard me because I no gallant because of the series of test they will have me run which will expend my money I don't have.

My question is to the learned health practitioners in the house, should I give it time for it to heal on its own or I should go to the hospital for doctor's opinion on the matter.

Attached are the medicines for your scrutiny, I hope it is not one of those fake drugs.

E get why "Fake" dey trend on X.

I wish you quick recovery.

Meanwhile, the ear problem might be a coincidence and not caused by the medicine. So, go to a hospital for a proper examination.

Please visit any nearby hospital and see doctor immediately, they will examine your ear and tell you what to do next, don't hesitate because of money

Go to the hospital... they'll likely place you on simple, affordable medication at first to see if it'll clear on its own and you may not have to go through any further testing if symptoms don't persist. Hospital is not always about loads of money

So sorry about your ordeal bro!!!

24 tablets as seen on the pack is a whole lot o, there are other anti malaria with 1 tablet x twice daily for 3 days, that will be 6 tablets in total.

When it comes to recommendations from pharmacies, avoid unpopular brands and seek a second opinion too… Lets avoid overloading our liver and kidney too… Get well soon!

This is why I hate taking drugs. Some drugs kills you slowly but you don't know it. There were some drugs that the adverse and lifelong side effects were determined many years after their production, and were thereby banned from the market.

This malaria stuff is avoidable depending on your environment and if you use mosquito net.

Could be side effect or fake drugs..

There is this quinine that is yellow in color that does similar thing those days.. They will tell you, when you take it you are to sit for a while ,if you lay down na deafness straight. If only we have a working Nafdac ,things like these will be reduced.. So many are dead cux of things like this.

Pressure in your head probably caused your eardrum to burst. It typically heals over time, but best check with a doctor

Get police officers and arrest the quack nurse or pharmacist who instructed you to take that stuff 8 per a dose and twice a day.

Damn it's too much (160 mg x4) twice a day

Tinnitus is a side effect of the medication and only a few persons get to experience it. I suspect your line of work was a trigger on the eardrums.

It should wear off after completing the treatment.

Sorry bro, you probably have taken one of those fake drugs being produced out there.

I understand the kind of hatred that would have developed in your mind now knowing fully well that someone is cashing and smiling to the bank to the everlasting disaster they just caused on you.

I believe that you will never look them the same way again.

There is every tendency that what you are feeling in your ear has nothing to do with the drugs you took.
You said you are a welder and the machines you use are noisy. It's possible that your ear problem was about to start that very day due to accumulated effect from the noise of your machine.

Visit hospital and explain to doctor ensure you tell him about the machine you use at work.

This is why it's always good to have doctor friends, so that you can easily call and seek for advice not necessarily coming in Nairaland to create a thread.

With time, I believe it will subside. Although, I am not a doctor, but I think you were not supposed to work under such high level of sound and vibration.

That was how I was given one unknown eye drop by a doctor. I used the eyedrop and suddenly my hearing ceased. I quickly discontinued using it and after some days my hearing gradually returned.

It's likely the drug is fake. They compounded quinine and called it Artemether/lumefantrine. One of the side of quinine is ringing in the ear. U will recover, but be careful where you buy ur drugs next time. Always patronise a registered pharmacy
