A friend was discussing with me this past weekend on how her phone was stolen around Ikate along Lekki-Ajah road.

She was about to enter the bus, while the guy sitting close to the door shifted for her so that she can sit close to the door not knowing the guy is an accomplice and has an ulterior motive.

The trick they use; as soon as you enter the bus and you are sitted close to the front door, the conductor will be trying to close the door as if it is faulty. He will be using that to distract you while the other person sitting in between you and the driver will be the one to remove your phone or wallet either from your pocket or bag.

As soon as the thief has dispossessed you of your belongings, the driver will revert to the bus fare negotiation and tell the conductor that he can't carry you for that amount again, he will now call an exhorbitant price that you won't want to pay, you will have no choice than to come down and look for another bus. When she was narrating her ordeal to me I told her that they used the same method for me. Immediately I mentioned the 'door closing' part she was shocked that the same pattern was used in stealing her phone.

A colleague of mine also narrated the same experience; same pattern.

Let's be careful out there in this coming new year, whenever we are in a public bus let's guide our valuables jealously and don't be distracted by these nonentities. We shouldn't be in hurry to board that bus immediately we notice any unusual behaviour among the passengers, driver or conductors.

God's protection will be on us and our family in this coming year and beyond.

It's even rampant here in PH . That's why we should be very observant when boarding commercial buses and taxis.
Before entering, look closely at the the driver and,"passengers". No body should ever make the mistake of boarding a bus with two rough looking men inside, one at the front with the driver and the other at back.
Never board a vehicle with only males inside especially thuggish looking ones.
God save us all.

Be specific in your location because not everyone in Nigeria is living in Lagos

Exactly the same pattern.
She entered the bus, they opened the front door, the driver asking for the time and the lady removed her phone to check the time, returned her phone to her bag.
Conductor saying the door not properly closed, so he was working on the door, meanwhile he removed the purse containing phone and money from the bag.
The driver said at the next bus stop that he isn't going again.
The lady entered another bus and realized that her purse is gone (Maryland ipperside enroute Oshodi, bit journey ended before Anthony, June 2023)

Similar action on the second lady, she embraced her bag to her chest.
The driver trying tricks to distract her telling her to drop her bag so that she could sit more comfortable, but she declined. She wasn't suspecting anything.
When the attempt failed, the driver changed the price of the journey and even said further that he isn't going any longer.
She got down at almost an irregular dangerous bus stop ( around 9.30 pm)
She narrated her story to the person she met at the bus stop who told her that they are robbers and thieves. (Oshodi enroute Ojota but journey also ended before Anthony, December 2023)

This will happen more to women who keep their phones in their bags. By the way there's a way you'll hold your bag tight, nobody can thief pin from you.

Waooooo. They were expecting her to loose guard with her bag so that they can remove her valuables. One needs to always be vigilant with ones bag, wallet or phones.
