There was no way anyone would have wanted to be a part of Biafra at the time because that decision came with weighty consequences.

For some reason, the world only remembers the genocide in Rwanda but people don't know that more Igbos died during the Biafran war than in Rwanda. Of course, nobody would have loved to sacrifice their people for this.

The question is this; why do non-Biafrans i.e those who have no business with Biafra concern themselves with those who will be part of it or not? Why are these same people silent on the killings of their fellow Nigerians from their own territory in northern Nigeria? They actually love the ethnic cleansing happening there but will fake to love any ethnic group in Eastern region who disclaims Biafra. They want a dead Nigeria with daily bloodshed to continue but hate to hear about Biafra who have been wanting to stay on their own to build a great country for all those within her.

This is an iconic video clip from 1968.

One of the banners indicates that the Nigerian protesters in London are indigenes of the old Rivers State (now Rivers and Bayelsa States) from different ethnicities based on their dressing. One of the banners contained a message about the massacre of Rivers State indigenes by the rebel secessionists which indeed occured from historical records. The rebel secessionists in 1968 invaved and brutally forcibly deported over 12,000 Bakana/Kalabari people from their homeland (and other communities). They nstill commemorate the deliberate massacre and forcible conscription of their relatives by the rebel secessionists.

Assuming, without conceding, that those naive people shown in the clip are actually Ikwerre, do you honestly think that given the benefit of hindsight and seeing all that’s played out from the late 60s to date….ie, how the ‘liberators’ had fashioned and controlled the Nigerian political-economy to favour themselves, and have taken ownership and control of the ‘spoils of war’, with Ikwerreland left holding the short end of the stick….seeing all this, you really think they’d have no regrets for being so naive, used and dumped, and Fulani being on the wrong side of history!?

Before the ill-advised Nzeogwu-led coup, the region the Ikwerre were a part of was one of the fastest growing economies in the world! There was relative peace, and any issues that may have arisen amongst the ethnicities had been looked into by the Willinks commission and put to rest! Before the Nzeogwu-led coup, the Eastern Region had existed for just SIX YEARS, and of course a few teething problems were to be expected! But what happened was that some Ijaw elite, either acting on their own, or in concert with influencers from outsiders to the region, began to put a false narrative out there that said the Igbo were the ‘big bad wolf out to devour them and drink their blood and newly found oyel’! The Ijaw were the weakest link in the ability and capacity of the then Eastern Region…and later Biafra, to face the Yoruba/Fulani hegemonic alliance with a common front and commonality of purpose and defeat them on the battlefield! The hegemonic alliance found the Ijaw….and maybe also Ikwerre and Ogoni, to be the soft underbelly of a otherwise fearsome and determined opponent!

All this talk of Biafra/Igbo committing ‘war crimes’ is just the hegemonic alliance, together with the aid and active connivance of some self-centred and Igbo-hating ‘one Nigerianist’ Niger-Delta individuals, to try and change the narrative and facts pertaining to the war just to suit their anti-Igbo/‘one Nigeria’ agenda! It hasn’t gone unnoticed how the hegemonic alliance has tried using divide-and-rule tactics (a devious scheme perfected and deployed by the British colonials) to try and isolate Ndigbo from other ethnicities in the region….and till today they still have greedy, self-centred individuals in the region that they can bribe to do their bidding!
