NGX’s Growth: Nigerians Are Poorer Under Tinubu's Government – Ndubuisi Ekekwe by Thonyboy: 8:55am On Jan 22
A United States-based innovator and tech entrepreneur, Prof Ndubuisi Ekekwe, says while the Nigerian Stock Exchange has recorded impressive growth in the last eight months under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the irony is that more Nigerians are poorer.

Ndubuisi reacted to an article titled, “In eight months of Tinubu administration, Nigeria’s stock market”, written by Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential aide on Information and Strategy.

Onanuga said NGX achieved 45.90 per cent growth in 2023, the highest compared to S & P 500, Shanghai Stock Exchange, Johannesburg, Ghana Stock SE, and Nairobi SE.

Reacting, Ekekwe said although the growth rate of NGX was factual, the boom in stocks and equities had made many people poorer and depressed.

According to him, foreign investors were not tripping into Nigeria despite the country’s stock growth because of the fall in the value of the Naira and soaring inflation, which was quoted at 28.92 per cent in December.

“The Nigeria stock exchange has been growing on absolute Naira, but on the real value, it is not. That statement is factual, but the irony is that the growth, as noted by Bayo, has made many people poorer and depressed the overall value of the stock market.

“That is why foreign investors are not coming for that 45 per cent gain because if you made 45 per cent on equity but lost 50 per cent on currency, with 30 per cent on inflation, you are poorer”, he said.

At the close of work on Friday, the NGX’s All-share index recorded an all-time high of 94,538.12 points, gaining 2.87 per cent.

The development comes as the NGX’s All-Share Index grew by 45.90 per cent in 2023.

Things first of all happen in the spiritual realm before they manifest in the physical. The growth of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is a pointer that good things are coming. This is the first time, after Olusegun Obasanjo that Nigeria has a decisive President.

Within how many months in office you are already bringing fake statistics.

Don't you realize it might get tough before it gets better.

Many of us think a president has that magic hand to turn an economy saddled with debt around within 8months...

That's unrealistic

Is it a lie that Buhari plunged the nation into multidimensional poverty?
Borrowed the nation to stupor and printed #23 trillion with no project to point that very money printed?

Is it a lie that the NGX growth has not reduced the level of poverty or that things are worse than BAT met them?

That you are hoping things gets better before that clown f**ks out of office doesn't mean we should lie about the current realities.
Great! that you have spoken like a learned person, so from what u said, did BAT create this syndrome holding economy or no be adverse effect of decisions on economy fr 8 years playing ? can it get better in just less than 1 year like that? no be miracle oo dem go work am, walk am up there

What Ndubuisi said here is not true.

Investors are not coming to Nigeria because of the nation's unpredictable policy changes and dollar illiquidity due to poor economic structure. It is dangerous if policy changes when you are already in, basically uncertainty.

But when it comes to making money. They will make money via arbitrage and several other methods. Nigeria's interest rate is almost 30% in most developed economies it is way lower, borrow money abroad and fix it here then do fx forward contract to lock your fund against inflation and fluctuation in naira value, so you can repatriate.

The face value looks promising until the foreign fund managers want to repatriate their funds. They will realize that exchange rates variation has destroyed their profits.

The reason why is simply: money is leaving the money markets because interest rates are too low and flowing into the capital market..

The CBN needs to increase interest rates to bring inflation down. Once this is done, money will flow out from capital markets into the money market which will lead to a reduction in stock prices.

Them wan steal money, them use excuse of removing subsidy more than ten times, In d name of developing "critical" sectors. Still, no light we still depend 100% on fuel. They lied with "school feeding" mantra. Abeg who them dey feed for school? They are lying with palliative. We don't even need it. All the critical sectors since obj time are still working in same capacity as they were 24 years ago. Those who support APC are spoon-fed by their parents. They don't pay bills by themselves

Oga who asked you to talk? Don't you know your name, don't you know they will profile you based on your name and tag you a member of LP and from a particular region, deliberately misinforming Nigerians because the president is not from your tribe. You want to tarnish the image of this administration, the president who is our brother abi.

We shall teach you and your tribesmen a bitter lesson. Watch out!
