It was after his demise that the Islamic caliphate became stronger and defeated the Roman empire in some places such as Ephesus which is known as turkey today and the place called Palestine today. This was what led to the "Crusades"
As you can see, the whole issue is a back and forth story. So, if we want to go very very well back into history, Israel has a much more legal claim to that place than Palestine.
