Bros I'll recommend a book for you titled "as a man thinketh". You can even try and download the electronic copy online. I graduated from a state university and have written aptitude tests with these so called federal university graduates where I performed very well. Peeps who wrote the recent presidential scholarship will attest to the fact that its not by school. I was even surprised that the private university grads that people do look down upon performed very well. My advice to you is to stop looking down upon yourself, remove the inferiority complex and you are good to go. Some few years back 3 guys graduated from my school with a first class, went to Nottingham university and even graduated as the overall best students there and consequently awarded Phd scholarship. The ball is in your court bro

Wake up boy, you talk like mummy's boy...what you have inside is the real thing. Education is not the end it is only a means to the end undecided

You are complaining, what about hnd holders? Atleast most job advert still says bsc should apply irrespective of what uni they graduated from.

Some university overseas are involved with this policy as well though. RGU requires a 2.1 from a Nigerian federal university for some of its masters programmes.
Re: State University Graduates Vs Federal University Graduates, Nigeria by Mzee0(m): 6:30pm On Nov 03, 2012
even without a 2:1 I served and in less than two months landed several job offers with 3 different companies without even knowing a soul... it all depends on how well you sell your self... forget the 2:1 or University trash... they don't matter
Re: State University Graduates Vs Federal University Graduates, Nigeria by Serendipity: 6:36pm On Nov 03, 2012
The truth that there are always exceptions is self evident.
Inasmuch as some coys may have preference for federal grads, it doesn't by no means dispense with the fact that many state uni grads are damn stellar intellectually. Your bounden duty now is to work, exert yourself by quitening your traducers and detractors by proving your mettle.
To my mind, the cleavage between state and federal grads has always been and will forever still be there. Afterall, that of polys and unis has been there.
But essentially, it doesn't determine your success.
To buttress my point, my elder brother graduated from ESUT last 3 years, now he has two cars and lives a posh life somewhat.
So, basically the uni you graduated from is immaterial, and that's if you know your onions and tomatoes.
Mind you, success is no one's exclusive preserve, alma mater nothwithstanding.
Shalom!

And what about private uni's ?

Some state uni's are better than many private uni's.

But employers have this @ the back of their mind when recruiting.

First preference: Federal Uni's ...ESP the best 5: U.I,IFE,ABU,UNN,UNILAG,UNILORIN/UNIBEN. Grad's from Fed Uni's like UNIPORT are most often than not viewed with 'suspicion'.

2nd preference: Private uni's.

3rd preference: State uni's.

Is this factual, that is, is this based on a tangible evidence of any kind or is it just your own thinking?

I'm having it up to here with people who tend to manufacture factual statements out of their arze and then present same as though they've just conducted a real life survey.

yemmy_ma: Welcome to Nigeria!

My advice to you, keep applying for jobs and don't turn a blind eye on a Masters degree abroad in fact aim for schorlarhip, partial or full from a good school.

When you are done with your masters, they won't look down on you anymore.

As for which is better state or federal, you definitely won't win those folks just trying to make themselves happy.
Job! just over broke syndrome is a big bondage. 99% of all these CEOs you see today never placed any importance of job seeking.

Please don't get me wrong. There is nothing bad in looking for a job but please don't wait for a job before you do something worthwhile with your talents.

Your talents or hobbies as some call it will bring in your millions. Enough of all these talk about labour market that does not exist anyway but what we have is selective market where connections have more influence than credentials so wake up friends before you realize you have spent years day dreaming about getting a job.

You cannot assume that all 'job seekers' are just as capable of locating and exploiting their talents as you have canvassed here. Good advise it is, no doubt, but it's different strokes for different folks; that is, some people's destinies may actually be tied to finding and keeping a job. So, please, discourage job seekers NOT!

oh that's true. I forgot some people are destined to serve others. I quite understand. Sorry for my assertions.Furthermore, i cant remember anywhere in my post where i discouraged anyone from finding a job but i only advised that they need not WAIT until they get a job before doing something productive.

saintgwizard: Lie! Whether state or federal so far you are sound accademically you got nothing to worry about. The only truth is that a larger proportion of sound graduates are from federal universities, this is traceable to the fact that at entry level, competiton is stiff and the tougher guys get into federal university.
you are a big fool.

If you have something upstairs, and can defend what you studied, you have no problem. they are your fellow corp members as you said and they have not tested labour market for one day to know if it favor those that attended state or federal University. I graduated from state University. if you remember the one that made news sometime ago that three corp members from a particular uni were rejected by the NYSC officals because they could not write their names..............I guess you've recalled wink.

In my department we were 98 that graduated,51 are working in various banks In Nigeria.some of us have worked and resign in order to further our studies abroad. so do not be intimidated by them. they will always like to pull you down just to look good.where u are going to in life does not have anything to do with the state of federal University. rather it is a stepping stone to your success

Sam Milla: You CHOOSED electrical.
You can now see why labour market is too creepy for you.
God bless you for that observation. Meanwhile, for whatever it is worth, I would not spend time in any state Uni. That is not to say you don't get brilliant chaps graduating from there, but heck, you also get a lot of guys whose foundations are weak because they actually bought the admissions in the first instance. All my degrees are from fed Universities and I am aiming to acquire more.

I do not know you, but I am highly disappointed that you allow people who are at the same level with you make you look inferior to your own very self.I will not even blame those guys who finished from the Federal Universities. I will blame you for allowing their statements to hit you so bad that you lost your esteem completely. You even come up to put up a thread about that. By so doing, you have confirmed that they are truly better than you.

Let me tell you something. Your own situation is even better than mine. After all, you finished from a University but a state Uni right? I faced the same kinds of discussion while serving NYSC too. Mine is even worse because I was serving as a HND graduate. some friends I met in the camp deliberately raised these issues to provoke me. But you know what, I never gave a damn about all they were saying because what mattered to me was not where I was at that time. What mattered to me was where I was going. In addition, even if they graduate with first class from the best Federal University in the world (not just Nigeria), I didn't see any difference in any of us because "unemployment no dey look face". It doesn't matter if you finish from federal or state school or Polytechnic. Unemployment is unemployment. We were all the same bloody Corpers with 99.99% chance of not getting our dream dream jobs after NYSC. So, how were they better than me? So, I never saw any difference in us.

To cut the long story short. I didn't allow those dirty talks to affect me. I didn't look down on myself. I kept moving and held my dreams high. That was in 2006. As at today, majority of those same guys ranting blah...blah blah about the superiority of federal universities are still on the same spot, complaining and lamenting about Nigeria anytime they see me online. Meanwhile, me the HND grad have worked in a place where they are still dreaming of. As at my last interview with Shell in Texas, they were asking if I would also like to work in Nigeria or just Texas alone. I gladly told the interviewer that I will be willing to work anywhere including Nigeria. I was so particular about Nigeria because of those guys who had said lots of nonsense about my qualification back then. I guess with that, they would learn not to underestimate anybody because of their "paper" qualification or where they graduate from.

I'm sorry if this looks like bragging. Bragging is not my intention. I only give a brief story of my life just to let you know that the only person who can stop you from attaining success in life is you. Nobody can stop you...and not even those mocking you about where you graduated from. Mind you, I didn't stop at the HND wink wink. I worked my ass out into the Grad school in the US, and currently focusing on software engineering. You can do better than those guys "If you believe in yourself". No mind them cool cool cool

My dear, dont listen to them. Most of the people who argue on such issue are usually the educate illiterates. Dont even mind the cert they are parading. The school u graduated from does nt matter. What matters is what u acquired from the school.

I went to state university. It blended me to suite the economy of Naija by creating my own biz instead of caging myself in another man's office in the name of employment.

The best university in Naija is state uni for this era. How can u allow them to over shadow u by the way. I wish i will jam them in national assembly soon. They will understand the kind egg heads that came frm state uni. Carry go! If u dnt get job, think business. U must nt work. Those who work for pple or govt, usually suffer in retiring stage. For me, am intelligent, rugged, social, God fearing and creative. Keep building ur own connection. I reactivate u, oya take a stand. Move forward never look back.

webcalculator: what is actually going on in the labour market?

i'm a corps member and i want to use this medium to understand better what is actually going on in the labour market.

i graduated from a state university, with a very good honours, and the intimidation i'm getting from my fellow corps members that graduated from federal universities is just unbearable. Inferiority complexes are quietly creepping into my life

when i graduated from secondary school, i had admission in a federal university cum state university. i was offered civil engineering in the federal uni., and electrical in the state. my passion then was to study electrical engineering and i don't want to waste a year, so i choosed electrical and that landed me in a state university.

the shock is that my fellow corps members were like i went to no school, employers don't employe graduates from state universities.

though i know that i'm academically sound, i have developed inferiority complexes. my thinking now is whether i will ever get employed.

please, is it true that employers despise state university graduates?
