Geometric Power Limited (GPL), an independent power generation company, located in Osisioma, Aba, Abia State, will be commissioned in February 2024, BusinessDay has gathered.

Ahead of the planned commissioning, GPL has concluded plans to receive natural gas supplies from the Oil Mining Licence (OML) 17 oil field, a joint venture operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Heirs Holding Company, in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State to fire its 188-megawatt power plant in the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba.

The OMNL 17 was operated for decades by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) until three years ago when the Federal Government declined to renew its licence and handed it over to the NNPC as part of the process of technology transfer and increase of local content in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

BusinessDay gathered that the SPDC went to court against the Federal Government over the action, and the case lingered for three years from the Federal High Court to the Court of Appeal and finally the Supreme Court, with the government winning all the way.

Ogbonna Chukwueke, a former Shell executive and gas expert, explained that during the period Shell did not make much investment in the gas gathering infrastructure in Owaza, which resulted in the poor state of the associated gas gathering (AGG) machines and equipment at the facility.

Getting the facilities to world-class standards so that ‘pure, unadulterated dry gas can be supplied to the Geometric Power plant in Aba is the only obstacle to the take-off of the plant which will ensure quality and uninterrupted power supply to nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State”, said Chukwueke.

The NNPCL’s insistence on perfect and long-lasting work is why the technical commissioning of Aba Power hasn’t yet taken place, though the job is practically completed”.

Bart Nnaji, a professor and chairman of GPL, who was impressed with the support of NNPCL to the Geometric project, observed that Nigerian NNPCL was now run professionally, like an efficient private sector organisation.

Nnaji, a former minister of power, in a meeting with his company’s executives and KSE engineers and investment partners from Turkey on Sunday, noted that when the NNPC became NNPCL in July 2022, many people around the globe thought it was a mere rebranding or even a mere change of name.

“All of us are today astonished at the professionalism exhibited by the new NNPCL leaders.

“The new NNPCL is not working like a state-owned enterprise noted in Nigeria for ineffectiveness and inefficiency, but rather like professionals from Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and the rest,” Nnaji said.

Finally, some good news! Every state should have an independent power generation, transmission and distribution company.

If you don't have gas, try hydroelectricity. Like Fashola once said, generating power shouldn't be some rocket science. grin

Now, 9 out of the 17 LGAs in Abia will have guaranteed power supply. I hope they can afford to pay though. Power is not cheap.

God bless Geometric Power Limited
God bless NNPCL.
This is a very big breakthrough for Nigeria on how to devolve Electricity from the Almighty Centralized Power Structure we have to the state Government and independent Power Producers.
Geometric and Abia state have taken the lead in this Noble power generation and distribution and I hope other State and Local Government emulate this wonderful project.
Nigerians have been scammed by all these useless So called Distribution companies and I'm in total support of anything that will allow individual states and local government to generate and distribute Electricity.
I expect all other states to take the initiative and start building their own independent Power companies, state Governors must understand there's big correlation between Electricity and Development.
Where there is enough Electricity in any state, there will be massive production of goods and this will eventually lead to a drop in unemployment of young people in any state.
I really give kudos to Geometric Power Limited for this massive breakthrough, this is the kind of news we need to start hearing from other states in Nigeria.

The plant is already working, but at below capacity. I think they have sorted their gas problems and are now set to operate at FULL capacity - 24/7 power supply. Aba is no longer on the national grid. The city now generates, transmits, and distributes it power.

Our Yoruba brothers should learn how to develop their cities.

Aba power is different from geometric. Aba power is the distribution arm, geometric is the generating arm. Geometric is not generating any power. Aba power get its supply from TCN.

Last year, geometric said it will start generating but they didn't fulfill it. That's why I said they should stop announcing plans. Let them generate the power first before announcement.

Please enlighten me, what will they use the gas for ? Or you use gas for transmission and distribution?

The gas is to fuel their power station, so they can start generating power by themselves.

I agree with you. Power stealing should also be curtailed. Nigerians are too corrupt and would start tapping the power without meters till the company finds it difficult to maintain the infrastructure. Then they will go ahead and accuse the company name gov as corrupt when power failure starts happening.

Geometric would have multiplied in its service if not for the CRAB MENTALITY in some Quota system politicians in Nigeria who find themselves easily at the high decision making quarters in Nigeria. Python will soon digest those who don't want others and themselves progress in modern development in this country.
