The U.S. envoy will tour Tel Aviv and Beirut in an aim to settle the current situation diplomatically. The need for that was clear, the moment it was established that even if the war in Gaza ends, the tensions between Lebanon and Israel are too deep to be settled easily. The U.S. is aiming to achieve a deal that will: 1- Force Hezbullah to withdraw 8-12 km away from the border 2- Force Israel into land conssessions in favour of Lebanon

You may have missed it amid the media defeatism, but Israel is winning its war in Gaza. Hamas’s losses are mounting, and support for the Israeli war effort has endured around the world longer than Hamas expected. We have already dismantled 18 out of 24 battalions of Hamas. Amir T

After the Turkish Sultan, Erdogan, managed to squeeze an arms deal from the U.S. in return for the approval of Sweden's acceptance to NATO by the Turkish parliament, the members of parliament of the ruling Fidesz party in Hungary today thwarted a vote on Sweden's accession to NATO after they were absent from a special debate initiated by the opposition parties, thus failing to reach the minimum number of lawmakers required to hold the debate. This is a BIG BLOW to the foreign policy of the U.S. administration that is pushing very hard for Sweden’s acceptance!

You may have missed it because of the media defeatism, but Israel is winning its war in Gaza. Hamas' losses are increasing, and support for the Israeli war effort continues around the world, longer than Hamas expected. The war is far from over, but the southern stronghold of Hamas in Khan Yunis is falling. The civilians have evacuated and the remaining Hamas forces in the west of the city are surrounded. The Israeli forces are closing in on them from all sides, including a powerful attack in the underground space. The Biden administration's restrictions along with Israeli caution are slowing the war, but consider that the battle for Mosul in 2016-17 against ISIS lasted nine months. "Mosul," writes John Spencer, head of urban warfare studies at West Point's Modern War College, "was one battle in one city against 3 to 5 thousand armed men with limited defensive capabilities. Israel is fighting multiple battles in seven different cities, against 30,000 armed men with underground military fortifications built under civilian areas." Israel needs time to achieve victory, and Hamas is counting on the Western powers to deny it the necessary time. The 2009 Gaza war ended after three weeks, and the 2014 war ended after six weeks. The "CNN strategy" of using human shields to gain media sympathy has worked every time for Hamas. As of right now, this time, that is not the case. October 7th was too cruel. This war has been going on for 120 days, and the US and Europe refuse to call a ceasefire. Israel says it has killed, seriously wounded or arrested about 20,000 of the 30,000 Hamas members, and disbanded 17 of the 24 Hamas fighting battalions in Gaza. The losses prevented Hamas from carrying out military maneuvers and reduced its rocket fire by more than 95% compared to the first days of the war. Israel has released 110 hostages, but its leaders are under domestic pressure while 132 remain captive. The Biden administration is using this domestic pressure as leverage to advance a hostage deal for a long truce in the war, hoping it will turn into a ceasefire. And this despite the fact that leaving Hamas in control of the territory means an Israeli defeat. No matter how long the truce is, Israel will probably be forced to resume fighting afterwards. This is perhaps the reason why Hamas opposed the American initiative to propose an agreement to release hostages in exchange for a truce, and instead demand a guarantee for a cease-fire, a condition that Israel cannot give. Recall that Hamas agreed to the first hostage deal after Israel captured Gaza City faster than expected. An Israeli advance now could push the terrorists all the way to Rafah, the last major refuge of Hamas, on the edge of Gaza. After the last divisions of Hamas are defeated, it will take more time to scan and clean Gaza of terrorist cells and terrorist infrastructure. Israel is clearing urban areas and tunnels at a "historic rate," writes Mr. Spencer, but the number of tunnels is enormous, and soldiers are finding ammunition in more and more houses in the Strip. Israel's mission for 2024 is to finish the job, but will US political support last? The Biden administration, despite its doubts, continues to provide military and diplomatic support to Israel. And the administration has little practical option to end that support. CAPS poll- Harvard's latest Harris finds that a large majority of Americans support Israel and its war aims. The leaders in Europe are also aligning themselves, and no Arab country has withdrawn from the Abraham Accords. Only Iran, which has escalated its regional war against the US, is exerting pressure. Even the UN International Court of Justice has refrained from ordering a ceasefire. Winning the war does not necessarily guarantee peace after it, but it is essential for Israel to be safe, and it is necessary to give the Palestinians a chance to live a normal life in Gaza. WSJ |
