They told me in my sons school he was always looking at his classmates when they munch their snacks and advised we also buy for him.

I had no choice. Is it really luxury? What alternative do I have. Tell him not to look at them when they eat? grin
Lol... Kids nowadays are more ajeboyish sha.

If na my days my teacher report me to my parents say I dey look longingly at other pupils snacks, na that I go explain with tears whether na bobo and biscuit I never taste before. Or whether if I no taste am I go die. Or whether the food wey I carry go school no satisfy me or whether I get different compartment for meals and and another compartment for snacks for inside belly grin

600K is a lot of money, but it's not so much really.

TYPICAL MONTHLY EXPENSE FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR ( BOTH KIDS ABOVE 3 YEARS)
NEPA + Fuel for house - 30K
Rent per month (2 bedroom flat) - 65K
Fuel for the family car - 60K
Feeding for family, including base food the kids take to school - 120K
Snacks for kids to school - 16K
Toiletries - 10K
School fees for both kids per month - 50K
Black tax - 15K
Clothing allowance for the family - 20K
DSTV Compact - 14K
Data for family - 20K
House bills - 5K
Car maintenance per month - 10K
Offering - 5K
Miscellaneous - 40K

TOTAL - 480K

I might be forgetting a thing or two, but in my opinion, this should be about monthly expenses for a lower-middle to a proper middle-class family, especially in Lagos (mainlands of mainland grin).

What is black tax?

Lol... I'm talking middle class here.

I grew up going to pry sch in the early 2000s and I'll grade my parents(esp my dad as a little above middle class) and the pry school I went to is a Catholic school in Abuja. The school fees is high wrt the other schools my peers were going (as at 12k when I graduated in pry sch and other schools as at then ranges between 4-7k) yet I don't take snacks to school. The only people bringing snacks alongside food were the very rich kids and you can easily spot them. I dunno about now but even my uncle that sends his kids too doesn't add snacks to it and no, it's not a public school.

It's all about instilling it sha. If our parents hear that we beg or look person food longingly, we don die for house that day. And God bless you first let you steal.

Well, everyone with the way they view things sha cos we were actually taught that taking snacks alongside food is luxury. And funny enough, every of my siblings and uncles are following that approach. It's a big reason I found it surprising hearing it here, I never knew it's now normalised.

As for the TV part, I still see smart TV as luxury. Most average/middle class families I know of, only few uses smart TV. Most na all these wall mounted plasma TV. It can be wide too. Shey no be just to watch TV and dstv mostly ni grin

I attended primary school in an area that’s not even considered urban in Lagos state yet almost all the kids came to school with snacks . Those who don’t come with snacks either come with cash to buy during break time or beg from others .

My parents do not believe in handing a minor cash for whatever reason , so we go to school with our own snack from home coupled with lunch . To me that’s not in any way luxury . Even when I serve for a federal government owned boarding secondary school , the students there could still afford snacks like fish roll, egg roll, wara and the likes despite having their lunch covered by their boarding fees .

So I find it strange that u see snacking as luxury .

As regards Smart TV , I still don’t understand why u see it as luxury sha . In fact I see it as if u are saying using a Windows 10 PC is luxury in 2024 when there’s windows 7 or Windows XP.

Na the koko gan be that. I remember DSTV compact was N5,000 in 2015 and with it, I could watch all premier league matches. I think they even used to have a subscription of 1500 at the time.

Now I'm forced to pay 19,800 to watch the same thing I was watching with 5k and with the devaluation of the currency, only God knows what they have in store for us.

The devaluation has affected a lot of things that people are not even talking about.

Early this week I worked on a procurement which we processed this same time last year when we overvalued the dollar at N700/1$ (out of our own volition ) .

That same transaction we had to value at N1500/1$ out of necessity now.

I had to do analysis/shalaye in the mail to the oyinbo oga that was going to approve it for him to see that the dollar value remains the same but na naira don pafuka shoot the price up to an increase of 114% of what it was last year in naira .

I fear people will lose jobs in the private sector in the coming months ; especially in companies where they don’t really have a working organized union . Promoters of companies will explore retrenchment as means of staying afloat . A lot of companies will even default on credit facilities ; banks’ business recovery units go tire sef

Wait till you see new prices. This one was likely bought two months ago.

Moderately accidented units will go for 8.6-9m for this same car. Just be patient, you'll soon see it grin

I heard most companies mark up their procurement with a 300 naira premium just to guard against devaluation. Like as dollar is around 1500 now, they wiill record it as 1800 in their books. The real shege will start when new products hit the market.

People are not ready yet for what's coming if things keep going this way. Most of the hike in prices of imported and locally manufactured goods we are still dealing with are increment on goods traders already have in stock . By the time the traders restock prices will jump further higher .

....I don't buy idea of distributing, rather make it available across the country at fixed rate. For example, a Bag of Rice should be sold for ₦20,000 and no one should be allowed to buy more than a bag at a time.

Get Representatives to handle the sales across all LGs, but make sure EFCC, ICPC and DSS are part of the team as well.

LG Secretariats can temporarily be made selling points.

Not even sure you can import it from Thailand, India at that amount self.

I grew up knowing a car as a liability, and not an asset.

APC turned cars to assets. Instead of it to depreciate, it appreciates

People who bought their Corollas for 1.8 to 2m, flogged it for 4 years, are now selling the same car for 3.1m

.....if we import directly from Thailand, it won't be up to that bro. A 50kg of Rice is less down ₦30k in Benin Republic.

I remember when Baba Oyoyo first banned Rice Importation, Thailand reached out to us for a deal but Baba ignored.

We can reach back to them for reasonable deal now. Import directly, Government to Government, from Thailand.

grin grin grin grin

Who told you the emboldened? Just to cure your ignorance. It is 25kcfa, in cotonou, which is even more than 55k. Even in Togo, which is cheaper, when you convert it to naira, it is still more than 50k naira.
