Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information & Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has expressed concerns about the Nigerian government's ability to pay a proposed minimum wage of N100,000.

He cited the country's current financial challenges, stating that most state governments are struggling to pay the present minimum wage of N30,000.

Onanuga emphasized that 26 state governments out of 36 are unable to fully comply with the current minimum wage. He questioned whether the federal government would be able to pay a higher minimum wage, given the existing financial constraints. This statement was made during an interview with Arise Television, where he highlighted the low revenue, high domestic and foreign debt, and the substantial percentage of revenue consumed by debt repayment. The concerns raised by Onanuga reflect the ongoing debate and challenges surrounding the proposed increase in the minimum wage in Nigeria.

The issue has also been a subject of discussion between the government and organized labor, with differing perspectives on the appropriate minimum wage.

Those with a basic understanding of economics will agree that N100,000 as minimum wage is not feasible now. Apart from the fact that more than 90% of state governments cannot pay it due to their ridiculously low internally generated revenue, the effects on inflation will be worse than what we have now. The ideal the government should do now is about 50-60k.

Lol... Dey play

Can your state government pay 500k as the minimum wage?

How many private firm can make 500k the minimum wage? Even the FG can't pay it. The new minimum wage won't be more than 60-65k.

FG already added 35k (wage award) to the normal 30k (minimum wage), making it 65k - though not being implemented fully. Anyone expecting more than 70k as the highest FG can pay will be dreaming.

My Opinion Though.
