Why will they not collect bribes are they not typical Nigerians?

What makes you think state police in Nigeria is even a solution?

May be remove the big word "police" and just call it "state security" or "state vigilantee". Something that already exist in small but limited capacity. Their jobs should be specialized and not interfere with the NPF or involved in civil matters.

The only way to keep politicians in check is to ensure INEC is independent of political influence. Civil societies that are free from political/partisan influence (ASUU, red cross etc) should be involved in setting up INEC every election year as it is done in proper democratic countries

lol. Go to heaven and bring angels to run INEC now because there is no Nigerian that is non partisan. In 2023, INEC conducted the best election we’ve seen since 1999 but bad losers refused to accept the election outcome and went on a campaign of calumny against INEC. Now, folks like you want ASUU, an affiliate of NLC to run INEC. Basically, we should hand over INEC to Labour Party and Peter Obi.

So you see, you are not even sincere in your position. You don’t want an independent INEC, what you want is an INEC controlled by your party.

And please, can you mention one country where university teachers union and Red Cross society are involved in running the electoral body?

[b]Clueless senators, ready to rubber stamp the president or a prominent elite.

They are not even aware they represent their constituencies, they have not discussed state police with the people who elected them.

Tinubu mentioned state police yesterday, the whole senate woke up today, and they are ready to "approve" it.

Presidential, legislative and the judiciary should be holding each other accountable, to provide checks and balances.

But in Nigeria, none of that exists.... Possible problems would be:

1-Potential for political interference and corruption.
2-Inadequate funding leading to poor resources and training.
3-Fragmentation of law enforcement, causing coordination issues.
4-Risk of abuse of power without strong oversight.
5-Exacerbation of ethnic and regional tensions./b]

What do you suggest as the way out?

All of you opposing the creation of state police. It's like your suffering never reach. Can't you all see that restructuring is already entering through the back gate? Regardless of whether governors will exploit such, are they not exploring already? Even your musicians aren't they using them already, even MC Oluomo get MOPOL working for him. Anyone with money uses the police., so what will be the difference. Our security as a people is more paramount than all this minor discussions. We the people need security more than anything. Look at the rate of kidnapping and one chance and crimes of evil magnitude moreover there will be laws guiding the implementation that we all will know and can reference when it has to be referenced. Times have changed we can do better. State police is true federalism. In the US, even county and municipalities have police. A county or municipality is the equivalent of local council/ local government.

I get your concerns on misuse and lawless nature of Governors but it's just a choice between devil and the deep blue sea.

Mention any country in the world where governors have immunity and state police joined together.

You can never give a governor state police and immunity at the same time or most of you will regret later.

If they love NIGERIANs so much, let have the state police and let's remove their Immunity so that NIGERIANs can challenge their actions with power.

This is how most of you were shouting for State independent electoral commission and you have also seen its results after some years now.

I always wonder how this politicians beat you people in this game.

I don't like Tinubu o. In fact, I don't like One-Nigeria as a construct.

I like the tribes and the indigenes respectively, but the composition of all these to form one giant country created by an european terrorist is just a worry to me.

That said, if Tinubu can fully pursue state police and find ways to influence the Senate, that's a step in the right direction. That's the beginning of devolution of power.

This new CP of a guy named Lagbaja is a Yoruba man. If there is unrest in the South East, a Yoruba man will now go there and bring in forces and you know na, some South East indigenes may be killed or arrested. Before u know it, it may look like victimisation. If Nigerian police forces were very professional, maybe it would have even been better. All these make me cringe.

Just like if a white police officer roughhandles a black man. As blacks, we have this feeling that we are being victimised even though the white police officer may truly be professional. But in this nigeria, our case is even better than blacks and whites of countries like U.S.A etc. because we are indigenous by nature. We have our ancestral lands.

So let everyone face their own lane. Let Ijaw police officer police ijaw community. Let Berom do the same. Same goes for Igede, Urhobo, Ejagham, TIV, Baruba, Bini, Igbo, hausa, beri, Kamuku, Zabarma, Bussawa, and of course, the gallant Yoruba nation.

A mixture of Federal and state police, Start with 80% Federal and 20% state, then next 2 years make it 60% federal and 40% state.

Then gradually pullback till we have 10% Federal and 90% state, But there should always be federal oversight, Nigeria is too polarized to have every state having their own police.

If this government should turn to state police overnight, They are removing the subsidy on state security.

We are still in the turmoil of removed dollar and fuel subsidy. Anyone suggesting state police now is being delusional.

Yes. Well armed Sharia police supported by crack foreign Islamic fighters like the ISIS fighters, can conquer the whole of Nigeria in one sweep.

Governors are very powerless, this is the only way every Governor can fight insecurity in their state.

So instead of every one waiting for Tinubu to come and answer to everyinsecurity.... It's better you let the Governors have their powers to Police their states and the President focus on the bigger Terrorist and economics.

Best move by the President. State Police is urgently needed since the mess of insecurity is becoming unbearable couple with the population of the country and it's complexity.
Why do all of you imagine that state policing necessarily means that governors should get to treat the police like their personal armies? That's not how things work anywhere else worth emulating! It's as if Nigerians can't conceive of the idea of division of powers, which is why they also seem to think a president must be an elected dictator able to pass laws and set prices as he pleases.

There is absolutely no reason why state police have to be answerable in any way to a governor, and in fact, it would better that they don't, so we don't have a situation where governors deploy them as enforcers of their personal whims. The heads of state police could be directly elected, just as the governors are, and subjected to an oversight committee appointed by state legislators and LGA chairmen. The important thing is that there should be a mechanism for citizens to hold the police accountable, which is what is completely missing right now.

This accountability issue is why local police at the LGA level would be an even better suggestion than state police, as then both the police and the citizens they should be protecting will know each other by name.

If statute police will protect the lives and properties of an average citizens, then it's welcome. A governor only has a maximum of 8 years in office. Maybe they could start by getting rid of most of those useless "staff" so they can free up revenues to pay for policing? Most Nigerian states aren't viable in the first place, and only survive because of the same idiotic system of subsidies which has ruined the country's power generation and oil refining sectors. The centralized NPF is just one more utterly wasteful system of subsidies that leads to atrociously poor-quality outcomes.

Poor thinker?

The point is that you already have a president who is a tyrant due to his near absolute power.

Now, state police will just create 36 more mini tyrants. Plus the president, that would be 37 tyrants in one country.

Would you rather not deal with just one tyrant than deal with 37 tyrants?

Have you seen that you are the poor thinker now?

You make it sound like all it takes to conquer Nigeria is state police... If it was that easy, ISIS would have taken over Nigeria to sell oil like they did in Syria.

Someone pointed out (here on Niaraland a week ago) that most terrorist are now bandits trying to make money. They are not looking for a fight, they are looking for victims. They don't want to go to heaven, they want to enjoy their ransom here on earth.

Even 18 years old local boys, if given weapons would eliminate any foooqin invaders/terrorist for fun/adventure.

Sometimes when the president is neutral, the governor can’t command even the strand of hair of any police officer during elections.

We saw it in Osun.

We saw it in Edo.

We saw it in many states as well.

That rubbish only happens when the president is in bed with the governor to rig election especially when the governor is unpopular.

Nice idea, but then: if you say so. Governors will told their hands over insecurity and say nothing. The President is in Asorock and can not come to each and every state to monitor issues day and night.

The Governors with the state Police on their desk can supervise their state issues and confront any insecurity once they get any information not until they call Abuja.

The Governors will also sit up since they know everything now lies on their hands. People won't be call Tinubu here Tinubu there again
