The way some people hold the source material like it's some Holy Grail...

These people forget the first season of the source material was it's weakest...maybe because they watched it during their childhood...

the adaptation isn't great but it's not bad either...

I feel like people are comparing the adaptation of the weakest season to the strongest parts of the cartoon...
Exactly! People want to feel the same emotions they felt while watching it when they were kids. This is the real world, and the adaptation isn't great, but it's definitely highly rated. I was happy when I saw him in Kyoshi Island playing on the airball with the kids. Omo! Dem really try jare.

The most effective way to enjoy media or any art form for that matter is to make peace with the fact that everybody discern and perceive art differently, and for a show that is adapted from a highly successful franchise, the reactions were always gonna be mixed as the metric would always be to place it side by side with said highly successful predecessor.

Btw, most of the bad reviews you lot speak about is even mostly from fans, as critics have a mixed to favourable reaction to it, heck it's even fresh on RT! and scores elsewhere are actually decent.

Point being, People saying it is an okay attempt (like you) Valid, People saying it doesn't measure up to the original and the error margin is wide, also valid.
True though.

You see reasons why people tend to disagree with stuffs, and you wonder if they all sat in the same room to discuss it. But then, you read a major critic review and see where everyone got their opinions from. The bandwagon effect.
If a movie, for example, has bad CGI or poor acting, and everybody points that out, is this also bandwagon effect?

Maybe you've not been watching a lot of good series or movies lately. I'm a hardcore fan of ATLA and I can't even finish an episode without dosing off. I downloading the whole One Piece series and watched everything in one sitting without feeling bored a bit.
Aang's storyline was just so flat- Aang is 12 years old bro 12 years!! and he doesn't even have fun throughout the show wtf!! He doesn't even have the space to make bad decisions.
Maybe the reason I hate it is because I'm not a regular movie viewer, but When watching movies or shows, I tend to watch their eyes and facial expressions, you can always tell when one is trying to remember a script and when they're not. Look at the acting of Meryl Streep or even the young actors of Stranger Things, you can definitely tell those actors can truly act and treat the Source material with respect. I think the Casting Director thought more about the appearance than the actual talent for this show tbh.
A -3/10 for me. Can't wait for the Animation show - the true representation of ATLA

Laughing.. definitely you haven't seen the animé. All the main characters are still developing.. before you could see what you really want will be in season 2.. like episode 6 upwards.

If you feel bored watching Avatar Last Air Bender.. well, I felt same about Attack on Titan to be candid. Same as Solo Leveling too

"RE:ATLA" (2024).

Done with episode 1 and this shii is low key fire ngl 😬😩👏🏿. I was actually expecting a "bad turn" all episode and it kept getting better.

And i actually haven't seen any thing in this episode that warrants an overwhelming negative review.

And as a VFX enthusiast,i just have to say, the CGI for this episode 1 is top work, it is so spot on especially that of Appa 👏🏿👏🏿.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix 2024)....

In my opinion, this was a pretty decent adaptation. It had its flaws but then again it had to adapt the weakest parts of the source material...

Unlike the source material that had a lot of diversion and arcs that felt like filler...this was made to be far more connected. A lot of side tracking arcs were cut out...also many were intertwined...

Personally I prefer a much more direct approach than all the filler and sidetracking in the source material - on that part, I'll say the story was told much better than the source material. I mean season 1 of the cartoon felt too repititive of gang running, being chased and getting captured and escaping again. It was reminiscent of how kids cartoons play out.

So in summary, they adapted MOST of the key story beats well...and cut out the filler..

The part this Netflix adaptation fûcked up the plot was the final arc in the Northern Water Kingdom. The adaptation of this arc left a lot to be desired in my opinion. I was disappointed with how this adaptation handled the arc.
It needed more breathing room. One more episode would have worked...plus the war felt like a way smaller scale than the cartoon (this probably is a budget issue) but the war was just not done well.

Also Aang doesn't know how to waterbend at all in this adaptation. If I recall correctly he could waterbend to an extent even from the beginning of the cartoon. He used Waterbending against Zuko and his soldiers.

The acting was also inconsistent...there were times of very good acting, and times you could see very amateurish acting...
The cast mostly performed their roles very well but there were instances you could tell the acting was weak.

Azula's actress didn't play the role well imo...she wasn't a fit at all...maybe she'll get better by season 2 because Azula wasn't even in season 1 of the cartoon.

What I loved tho were some additions. They showed quite some development of Azula being a victim of Ozai's scheming....but I wished they reduced Ozai's screentime...
The less screentime he has, the more fearsome he would be. This is the part I wished was reduced.

There's also some weird unnecessary exposition sometimes...like a member of the Southern Water Tribe telling the story of how the Avatar disappeared...it was just not needed. The dialogue in general wasn't bad...it was decent even though it had its bad moments.

The dynamic between the main trio was good but not as good as the cartoon...same as with Zuko and his uncle Iroh...good but not as good as the cartoon...

The fights were good. I recall the fights in the cartoon weren't really great in season 1...until Toph and Azula's introduction in season 2. So at least in comparison, this adaptation did well in the combat...even though it wasn't as good as the cartoon.

Music was pretty good. They used original tracks from the cartoon and used them well in my opinion...gave some emotional touch.

The CGI was also decent. I watched in good quality and I'm not seeing where the complaints are coming from. The CGI was pretty good...I kept waiting for moments to take me out of the immersion but there really weren't...
The CGI was spot on...even though they had to tone down the battles for it...

Final thoughts:
I think this is a pretty decent adaptation. ATLA fans should be glad they got an adaptation as good as this rather than ranting.

It's definitely good enough to watch a second season. And I will definitely watch a second season because that is where the Cartoon actually got really good.

I think people who are hating on this show somehow hold the cartoon as their holy grail. They watched the cartoon in their childhood and nostalgia won't let them realize that season 1 of the cartoon was not very good...it was decent at best...but a pretty weak season that even almost made me drop the show if not for it's reputation.

Remove your rose-tinted glasses from the cartoon and watch this adaptation objectively...they did a pretty decent job at it...
It had its flaws but nothing that makes the adaptation awful...

Heck...I enjoyed this more than season 1 of the cartoon... (Aside from the last arc).
I enjoyed it more because it was more streamlined and didn't need to keep adapting unnecessary arcs like the cartoon did. It wasn't repititive like season 1 of the cartoon was.

@those who haven't seen this adaptation, you have nothing to fear imo...enjoy it for what it is

How will you go into a live action adaptation with so much expectations. I believe that's where your problem comes from.

If you had gone into it not expecting much you would have left with a feeling of they tried but still alot more improvements to be made.

To be fair alot of the storyline were rushed, if not all, I think the only one which they tried to really fleshed out a bit was Zukko's storyline and maybe Aang.

But that's to be expected in a live action especially one where the initial showrunner weren't part of it. Going into it expecting alot is just setting yourself up for disappointment. They will hardly ever capture the same charm of the animation that's just the truth.

Also the numbers of episodes were too small. If you haven't watched the animated version you won't buy any of the emotional attachment in this series well except again Zukko and Iroh.

I went into it not expecting anything, and it was ok. The visuals were a massive improvement from the movie. I thought it would be impossible to ever portray bending in live action but they did it well. There's alot of room for improvements that's for sure but I am looking forward to where they take it in season 2.

Didn't like the forcefulness of katara though, aang didnt really carry the character completely to me but the rest of the cast was on point.

Prince zuko ( na him win for this one ).
Uncle iron ( runner up). The chemistry was right with the characters.

Azula appeared abit too plump for my liking.

Sooka wasn't goofy enough but I guess it there'd gone all in it would have been bad, so they dulled him abit.

Firelord ozai ( another top dogg).

It was very good imo and worth the time to watch it.

It's season 1.. you are rushing too much lol.
Adaptation story can't be the same thing with the animation..and adaptation is well written..

Aang is not yet an avatar coz he's only an airbender. He's the protagonist. Giving him gradual understandable realistic growth is very much understandable

I am not sure that writer guy watches all the movies and series he reviews.
the guy sometimes reviews nothing less than 10 movies and series in a week.
What is baffling me is that three new series might come out today with each series having more than 8 episodes each.
Before the end of tomorrow, the writer guy will give reviews of all three series which means he is telling us he he watched more than 25 episodes of series in 24 hours.

Sometimes i am like how did this guy watch all these all together.

Nah!!!!! That's not possible at all.
The guy just reviews movies and series without watching them.

Lol, I think say na only me dey notice this thing. grin grin

Baba fit watch 10+ TV shows and movies in a week. I go dey wonder which job Baba dey do. Whether Baba dey review films for a living. Cos that work rate mad gan. 😂😂

Most likely he fast forwards movies as he watches. That's the plausible reason I can think of. Cos the combined hours needed no dey match the quantity he rates per week. Assuming we're accounting for other engagements he must have.
