Wole Soyinka's Ake by Abdullahi4u7(op):
Have you read it?

I had once picked it but dropped it after reading through a quarter of it and feeling totally lost.

I think he used too many big words or a lot was going on in the book beyond my comprehension.

This happened about 8 years ago and I haven't gone back to it since then.

It was surprising because I read and enjoyed other literatures at that time. Some of which were George Orwell's Animal Farm, The Unicorn Chronicles (Song of the wanderer), Achebe's Arrow of God and lots more.

Have you read Ake?

I did not exactly have problem with Soyinka’s Ake. It is one interesting memoir I would love to read again. It was his The Interpreters that I actually had a problem with at first attempt. But I got over that too about two years later on my second attempt.

Regardless, Ake is full of captivating anecdotes and memories from Soyinka’s childhood. One such anecdote is when the child refuses to prostrate to a too demanding chief with the excuse that he doesn't prostrate to his father (Essay) and mother (Wild Christian), talk more of an ordinary human being like the chief.

While Soyinka is later corrected by his parents, this incidence clearly shows that Soyinka’s rebellion had been there right from childhood.

For me, Ake is his most straightforward prosaic literary text.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I should probably give it another try whenever I lay my hands on it.
