Cattle Dealers Sue Abia Govt Over Plans To Demolish Houses Inside Market by fergie001: 8:36am On Mar 04
An Abia State High Court sitting at Isuochi would on March 13, 2024, commence hearing in a suit seeking to stop the state government from going ahead with its plan to remodel the Umuchieze Garki Cattle Market.

The government has also decided to end the practice of cattle dealers and their families making their homes inside the market.

But the cattle dealers and residents of the market have dragged the government to Court following a warning notice served on them by the Town Planning Authority of Umunneochi Local Government, which is poised to commence the demolition of residential houses inside the market.

The suit, No. HUM/9/2024 was filed by 12 persons, including Sarkin Zango, Hussaini Muhammad, and Buba Kedemure, the spokesman of the group, for themselves and on behalf of cattle dealers and the market residents.

In the interim, the court would decide on an application for an interlocutory injunction seeking to restrain the government from carrying out the demolition of residential houses inside the market, pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Since last October, the cattle dealers have been at loggerheads with the Abia government after the Government took a firm decision to remodel the cattle market and make it non-residential, citing security issues.

Joined as defendants in the suit are the state Commissioner for Lands, Chaka Chukwumerije; Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna; Chairman of Umunneochi Local Government, Ndubuisi Ike, and the state Commissioner of Police.

The lawsuit is useless, the state is protecting their people and of course they have every reason to do that.

The garrki cattle market in Lokpanta has became a den of thieves, kidnappers and serial killers. Right there in the market, people could be stopped on the express road and taken into that market and killed, (we saw stories from there on front page here on nairaland) many people have been killed there needlessly, and yet the police and army remain on guard in and around to market daily.

There are two checkpoints each, to and fro the market, one police and one army on both ends, yet crime is centralized there, an archbishop of the Anglican communion was kidnapped just meters away from this market, it was on front page here last year, he mentioned in an interview that he was kidnapped by herdsmen, and herdsmen sleep inside the same market, well protected.

You won't even know the one that is their home and the one that is a kidnappers holding cell or torture chambers. They should live outside the market like every other Nigerian from every state, that way every activities will be scrutinized.

Hehehe.

The government should remodel the market and make sure safety and sanitary measures are put in place.

Let them look for accomodation nearby and stop sleeping inside the market.

Why the lawsuit? The governor has the duty to protect his people and if he feels this is necessary, by all means he should go ahead with the plan...I'm sure they have abused the privilege

We are no longer in the 18th century and you can't drag us back to your archaic level undecided

This is the igbos oppression of the northerners in their state.

This move is targeted to destroy the huge investment of the northerners in the state.

This is a pure hatred against the northerners and we cannot allow this to happen.

Drama will not end because a lot of Nigerians are drama kings and queens if they don’t see region to fight they will fight state, village or clan.

They are too competitive and not lovers of peace and live and let live.

First of all what is a house doing inside a market. Its not even a well built house but shanties which serve as kidnappers and criminal den.

The last time shallow graves were found around that area. The then anglican bishop was kidnapped around that area and he stated categorically that fulani herdsmen are responsible for his kidnap, despite have army check point close by.

Governor Otti please do not relent in your commitment to making Abia staye secured, not like that useless Uzodinma.

You dont even need to give them notice considering the security concerns emanating from that Area.
