Over the weekend, the violence in the capital Port-au-Prince ramped up once again. Heavily armed gangs attacked the National Palace and set part of the Interior Ministry on fire with petrol bombs.

It comes after a sustained attack on the international airport, which remains closed to all flights - including one carrying Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

He tried to fly back to Haiti from the United States last week, but his plane was refused permission to land. He was then turned away from the neighbouring Dominican Republic too.

Mr Henry is now stuck in Puerto Rico, unable to set foot in the nation he ostensibly leads.

Among those who did manage to get into the stricken Caribbean nation, though, was a group of US military personnel.

Following a request from the US State Department, the Pentagon confirmed it had carried out an operation to, as it put it, "augment the security" of the US embassy in Port-au-Prince and airlift all non-essential staff to safety.

Soon after, the EU said it had evacuated all of its diplomats, fleeing a nation mired in violence and facing its biggest humanitarian crisis since the 2010 earthquake.

Millions of Haitians, however, simply don't have that luxury. They're trapped, no matter how bad things get.

The situation is dire at the State University of Haiti Hospital, known as the general hospital, in downtown Port-au-Prince. There is no sign of any medical staff at all.

A dead body, covered by a sheet and swarming with flies, lies in a bed next to patients waiting in vain for treatment.

Despite the overpowering stench, no-one has come to remove the body. It is rapidly decomposing in the Caribbean heat.

There are no doctors, they all fled last week," said Philippe a patient who didn't want to give his real name.

"We can't go outside. We hear the explosions and gunfire. So, we must have courage and stay here, we can't go anywhere."

With no prime minister and a government in disarray, the gangs' power over the capital is near absolute.

They control more than 80% of Port-au-Prince and the country's most notorious gang leader, Jimmy "Barbecue" Chérizier has again told the prime minister to resign.

"If Ariel Henry doesn't step down and the international community continues to support him," he said last week, "they will lead us directly to a civil war which will end in genocide."

Meanwhile, the police, outnumbered and demoralised, are struggling to keep looters at bay. The Salomon police station in Port-au-Prince was attacked and burnt out, and charred police vehicles lie outside the still-smouldering building.

Those prisoners are now back on the streets and bolstering the ranks of their gangs.

In the aftermath, the cell doors are now wide open, the facility is virtually abandoned and there are blood stains on the ground after gunmen overpowered the guards.

A prime minister unable to return, violent gangs in control of the capital and dead bodies piling up on the streets: Haiti is currently a nation about as close to a failed state as it's possible to be.

Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has said he is sure the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, would lose the 2023 presidential election. Soludo said he would not submit to the bullying of Obi’s supporters, who recently descended on him for addressing issues in the state.

The governor made the comments in a lengthy write-up personally authored, with the title, “History Beckons, and I Will Not Be Silent (Part 1).”

Soludo said Obi was inadvertently making the pathway to victory much easier for the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, and at the same time, toying with the destiny of millions of Ndigbo.

But the chief spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign, Yunusa Tanko, accused Soludo of being sponsored by some unknown persons to weaken the base of the party in the South-east.

The former CBN governor had been under intense attack for close to a week for dismissing Obi’s investment in the state as amounting to nothing, during a television interview.

Soludo said in the write-up, “My attention has been drawn to some of the tirades on social media following my frank response during an interview on Channels TV regarding the ‘investments’ Mr. Peter Obi claimed to have made with Anambra State revenues.

“Sadly, several of the comments left the issue of the interview to probe or suggest motives, inferred from my response on ‘investment’ that I am opposed to Peter Obi’s ambition and, therefore, committed a ‘crime’ for which the punishment is internecine abuse and harassment, even to my family.

“Everyone knows that I don’t follow the winds or one to succumb to bullies, or shy away from a good fight especially, when weighty matters of principles and future of the people are involved.”

Soludo said he had urged Obi to return to his former party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to actualise his presidential bid. He added that he had always told the LP candidate to his face that he was not capable of winning the 2023 presidential election, especially, under LP, which had neither a councillor nor a local government chairman.

Soludo said Obi was not just his friend, but also his brother, but despite that, they have their political differences.

He stated, “For full disclosure, let me state that Peter Obi and I are not just friends, we call ourselves ‘brothers’. But we have political differences: he left APGA for PDP after his tenure as governor, while I have remained in APGA since 2013.

“During the last two governorship elections in Anambra in 2017 and 2021, he led the PDP campaigns but APGA won landslide in both elections. By the way, in 2016, he visited and proposed that I defect to PDP and contest the 2017 election against the incumbent Willie Obiano, but I declined.

“After my victory in November 2021, he called to congratulate me, as I did to him in 2010. That is the Anambra way: we fight fiercely during campaigns but share drinks at the next social events. After all, it was the Great Zik of Africa, who taught us that in politics, there are no permanent friends or permanent enemies but only permanent interests.”

Arguing that Obi’s presidential bid would only work in favour of Tinubu, Soludo said, “Indeed, if I were Asiwaju Tinubu, I would even give Peter Obi money as someone heading one of the departments of his campaign, because Obi is making Tinubu’s pathway to victory much easier by indirectly pulling down PDP.”

Obi, according to Soludo, would only deplete the votes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and pave the path for an APC victory.

He stated, “The current fleeting frenzy, if not checked, will cost Ndigbo dearly for years. The South-east has the lowest number of votes of any region, but it is also the only region where the presidential race might be a four-way race (it is a two-way race in the other five regions) thereby, ensuring that our votes won’t count in the making of the next president of Nigeria.

There is nothing like performance in their government. Their target is to snatch, grab and run away with power at all costs. They have mastered the art in a technological and advanced way. It will take the grace of God to counter their schemes.
You know the funny thing, APC is the winner of the last presidential election but to my surprise,they are the one still campaigning and still in an election mood till date. They've forgotten that after election, there is no more campaign but governance. You see that even the president is already talking about 2027 election in 2024, when he has not even spent one year out of the 4 years he snatched, grabbed and run away with. With this crop of leaders and their blind followers, we are in a long thing because governance will be relegated to the ground.

Fake story or not, the best way to get rid of APC is for the oppositon to unite.

Buhari lost three times, and spent billions of naira , including going it alone, before he learned his lesson by 2012, and helped form a united oppositon which he used to get into Aso Rock in 2015. We would have had APC kicked out in 2023 if Obi had remained in PDP (sorry obidients, but it is what it is, PDP was the only party that could match APC , LP was just basically the southern version of CPC In 2011).

Another way is if all the minor parties form one mega party and get APC and PDP Out, but that isn't going to happen because Nigerians prefer pdp and apc.

SO, we have to take reality, and reality for now favors a mega party centered around PDP TO kick out APC come 2027.

The obidient movement was not started by APC...the truth was many people were fed up with PDP as well as APC...also some people saw a chance in Obi, and that included the middle class.

The problem was, in elections, we do not get the candidates we want so, we have to go for the ones that are closest to us. If Obi had not gutted the oppositon, APC would have lost.

I have not seen a party that will leave the substance and be chasing inordinate thing like APC. Instead of them to face squarely governance that will engender them in the hearts of the people,they are busy still campaigning after election. Well, they know that in this part of the world, electorates are the most dossier and of short memory all over the world. That they even forgot the wrong did to them 24 hours ago by their enemies and still went about hailing and rolling drums out for them with acrobatic dance.
In serious clime, the kind of defeat they would suffer if they didn't effect the required change the people needed would be monumental but because they know they can either snatch, grab and run away with the people mandate or bribe their way to win the election.what a people, what a country.

I doubt that INEC Massively rigged the election (I stopped believing in the rigging thing when I found out that people around me that were blasting the ruling party in 2003, went and voted for the ruling party in 2003. Election was not rigged. The oppositon was gutted by Obi leaving PDP. Had he stayed, PDP would have won.

I would not totally agree with you on this. APC won because the G5 that would have helped them (PDP) sold out. Same way the G5 did against Jonathan.
Again, the north also sold out by dividing their votes along APC and PDP.
If the G5 were intact for him and the north did not divide their votes, PDP would have won. Peter Obi had incursion in both APC and PDP grounds.

Those who prefer either Obi or Atiku because they think they will perform better than Tinubu are all jokers because, in my own assessment, all these politicians are the same.

They will tell us what we like to hear during the campaign, but when they get into office, we find out that they are worse than their predecessors.

We need to turn against these career politicians because all they do is enrich themselves, their families, and their friends.

Lastly, we need to do away with tribal politics.
