https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKIkV4WMXjw Tanitoluwa is the son of Kayode James Adewumi (born June 24, 1976, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria) and Oluwatoyin Kuburat Adewumi (born June 16, 1981, Ado Ekiti). He has a brother who is seven years older. Kayode used to run a print shop in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, with 13 employees, and Oluwatoyin used to work as an accountant. Adewumi's family is devoutly Christian and have been threatened with violence by the Islamist terrorist organization Boko Haram. In June 2017, they left Nigeria for the United States and sought religious asylum. Philip Falayi, a pastor in Queens, New York, gave them temporary accommodation, and connected them with the New York City Department of Homeless Services. They were given a place to stay in a homeless shelter in Manhattan. Kayode took work as a dishwasher and as an Uber driver in a rented car, while Oluwatoyin worked as a cleaner.Tanitoluwa enrolled in elementary school P.S. 116. In October 2022, Adewumi and his family were granted asylum in the United States. This status allowed the family to remain in the US permanently and allowed Adewumi to travel internationally to compete in chess tournaments. |

Congrats on the boy's achievements but they need to put this boko haram lie to rest abeg. Boko haram don suffer in the hands of these lying Nigerian asylum seekers sha. How did an Abuja based family become boko haram targets? That part no too clear. How I wish these asylum officials can take their time to investigate all these elaborate claims by asylum seekers. The real people that need this asylum don't have the facilities to travel. That's how one Southern based man claimed that he's gay and boko haram is after his life and he was granted asylum in Europe. Then he went on to kill and dismember his girlfriend. |

talk2hb1:He had to put the Nigerian there so they would not deport him. I would advice he lay low instead of trying to legitimize his flimsy excuse for seeking asylum in the USA. |

Between 2009 and 2015, Boko Haram regularly carried out terrorist attacks in Abuja, including on Christian targets: December 24, 2010: A bomb attack on Christmas Eve near the Abuja Christain Centre in the Asokoro district killed at least 11 people and injured 75 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boko_Haram). August 26, 2011: Boko Haram carried out its first suicide bombing against a non-military target, the United Nations office in Abuja. The attack killed at least 23 people and injured over 80 (https://www.un.org/africarenewal/news/boko-haram-violence-affront-humanity-ban-declares-reaffirms-un-support-nigerian-government). May 22, 2014: A car bomb exploded at a shopping mall in the upscale Wuse II district of Abuja, killing at least 21 people and injuring 17 others (https://www.cfr.org/boko-haram?topics=All®ions=All&type=All&page=1). dominique: |

You have a very wrong title, they seek asylum but why make it a topic? derecho: |

ZekeYeager:Was any specific individual targeted in these attacks? Compare these 3 attacks in 4 years to back-to-back attacks experienced by people in north east. Between Borno residents and Abuja, who should be seeking asylum? The boy's parents claimed that Boko Haram was after their lives because they were Christians which we all know is far fetched |

They had their asylum request approved in 2016 and they had lived in Abuja for several years prior to then. The Boko Haram insurgency was at its absolute peak at the time and nowhere was safe, not even Abuja. I know because I lived there and I remember it very well because I lived not far from the Banex Plaza when it was bombed. dominique: |

ZekeYeager:If that's the case, every single Abuja resident including you would have been granted asylum by now. The family were granted because they claimed boko haram targeted them because they were Christians which is a barefaced lie! |

Firstly, every single Abuja resident didn’t apply for asylum. In my case I was in the NYSC Batch C and as soon as my service year was over, I simply went back home in the South West. Secondly, the United States carries out some of the toughest and more painstakingly diligent background checks and screenings of asylum seekers. They stay on waiting lists for months and sometimes years, and most asylum applications actually get rejected. I'm pretty certain the US Immigration Department has more resources to investigate an asylum application than a Boko Haram apologist on Nairaland. Finally, I thought Nairaland moderators were supposed to adhere to neutrality in their activities on the forum, but here we have one who is running damage control for Boko Haram of all people. I guess we now know why Nairaland's standards have deteriorated the way they have over the years. dominique:
