Four Arsenal players confronted Arsene Wenger after huge stars sold to bitter rivals, reveals Jack Wilshere

Despite that, Wenger maintained Arsenal as a top four club, qualifying for the Champions League for nineteen consecutive seasons between 1998 and 2017.

However, Wilshere says that came at a price, explaining: “Being totally honest, as a group of players we knew that fighting for for the top four was our level.

“Manchester City had just come through, spent a load of money on the likes of Nasri and Adebayor. Manchester United were still there with Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand.

"We knew that we were always going to fall short.

“It was difficult for me at that time to listen [to the Invincibles comparisons].

"That was going on, but there were never any conversations between players where we questioned why Arsene was coming out with lines like ‘top four is a trophy’.

“I remember celebrating top four as success. It was difficult for fans to understand that because of the Invincibles.

“I remember one of my first pre-seasons and it was the year that Adebayor left, Kolo left. We were in Austria.

"I wasn’t part of the conversations but Fabregas, Van Persie, Nasri, Gallas going to Arsene and asking: ‘What’s going on? Where are we going with the club?’

“During my time at Arsenal, there were always those questions – where is the Patrick Vieira? Where is the Thierry Henry? Where is the Tony Adams? Where are the leaders?

“Especially when we threatened to drop out of the top four, and rightly so. We could have done with someone to grab us in those tough moments.

“While we were losing big personalities, we did replace them. We still had quality players, but were we challenging for the league? Probably not.”

One of Wenger’s most controversial sales was Van Persie to rivals Manchester United in the summer of 2012 for around £30m – one that still stings the Arsenal fan base now.

Wilshere continued: “I was surprised that Wenger let Robin van Persie go. I was disappointed but, being completely honest, that is probably the trajectory that Arsenal were on at the time.

“Robin knew that we weren’t going to challenge for the Premier League title for a few years.

“The reaction from the fans was quite visceral and rightly so. It was understandable. It hurt and there were definitely conversations between players about what was actually going on at the club.

“The hurt surrounding Robin’s departure was more of a personal one, because we knew him so well. He was the captain. He was a good leader and he set high standards.

“As much as it hurt, he made the right choice, because he won the league that year.”
Na why you see me, I no dey ever beef or blame any of our ex players for leaving arsenal during those periods cos I really understand and if it was me, I would do same 10x.
All these hypocrites most guys are calling them, I've never been a party to it even though I understand (in fans' pov) where they're coming from.

It's very annoying for a team to almost achieve success then most of the key players are sold. Very very annoying!!

Imagine this team that almost won league last season. Imagine entering into this season and we sold Saka and Odegaard then strengthen with somehow inferior quality . There's no how other players like Saliba and other core players won't feel somehow.

If Wirtz is willing to move abroad, he is one player I greatly admire. I would like us to move for him. Though I don't know if he would be able to cope with EPL.

The sale of Biereth+ESR+Partey should be able to turn up the fund for the transfer.

As for the beef, it has to do with their attitude rather than the fact that they left the club. Look at the way Adebayor celebrated. Sanchez was our favorite until he started mocking us. That's unprofessional.

I'm so glad we're over that phase reason why I was confident we are on an upward rise last season when most people thought we might falter.

As for Sanchez, I didn't know he mocked us sha. I know of Nasri and the famous Adebayor celebration but then na fans cause some of these things. Most of them (fans) were always insulting these players so it's just a form of retaliation cheesy
Imagine fans burning Rvp jersey when he left and was still booing him anytime we played each other (and I'm sure social media insults go follow too). When he scored against us his first goal, he didn't celebrate but the booing and taunt didn't stop.
There's so much some of these players can take sha grin

Chido Obi’s progress is going well as I expected, I watched his game against Palace recently. He is a volume scorer when he scores. We need to help him develop some consistency with his scoring over a period of time. He can be special I tell you but we need to be patient.

We have to be careful with how we compare and talk about that era. There is absolutely no way a coach like Wenger who had won numerous league titles including being invincible, FA Cups and a trip to the UEFA suddenly became content making top 4. You think selling his best players gave him any joy? Some of these things are tough.

I challenge anyone to mention a top class coach during that era that Wenger competed against or even now who would have come close to achieving top 4 considering our reality at the time. If anything, top teams like Madrid and even City openly recruited him. When the position became vacant, did you wonder why no top coach wanted to touch it?

Furthermore, Arteta is benefiting from the sacrifices made by Wenger during those difficult years. Keeping the club alive by qualifying for the UCL, getting bargains and selling his best players kept the club afloat financially. Arteta got a taste of something similar in his first 2 years when he had no funds. We flirted with relegation before finishing 8th in consecutive seasons. We just couldn’t compete with other teams financially.

If Arsenal finds itself in a similar situation today, I can assure you that we will lose Saka/ Saliba/ Odegaard / Rice and Arteta will jump ship ASAP! We will have to rely on our academy and bargains to even stay alive in the EPL.

Nah he was contented with top 4 alone because he was afraid if he spent alot he might not still meet up with expectations
Was he given 200m transfer money or not?
Did he reject it or not?
Don't forget th14 was part of the group then, that's the reason he told him to either face his youth team or resign because he also questioned why wengay won't strengthen the team to meet up with his opponents

When last did arsenal get beaten heavily by other teams again?
He was so toxic no legends associated with arsenal even the fans too

U know the issue with cutting Wenger some slack about that era is? PERCEPTION.

Some fans including myself feel/believe that while wenger gives as impression that his hands are tied considering the financial situation; it appears as though he enjoyed being contented with the top 4 challenge every year.

We may be wrong in our perception about him, but he gives air of someone who was contented with youngings every year knowing fully well his job was secured since he was making hell of money for the management while doing their bidding. Like I do try to put myself in his shoes and many times I come to the conclusion that I wouldve walked away from the club before things got to the level it got to before he left.

Arsene Wenger was a very good manager and he would've gotten juicy contracts elsewhere if he wanted to on the premise that the club is making him into a selling coach rather than a coach challenging for major trophies. Since that 2006 finals everything went downhill and he just stay put; it can never be me.

I'm sure if Wenger had left, the club signs another manager who fails while trying not to spend money ; the board's hand would've been forced to spend and we would've gone past this stage long ago. See how long loserpool spent in the wilderness, they just kept at it till their management got it right with klopp.

I think Wenger staying to do the board's bidding was one of our major problems of that era. Omo! It was embarrassing he lost his 1000th game in charge to Chelsea 6-0. That was the height of it for me

He rejected psg and Madrid deals because they will sack him if he didn't deliver

Doing the board bidding you say, same board came back to give him 200m for transfer he rejected it
He was obviously okay with top 4, 5 and 6
Teams Blatter us like thief home and away
If the top teams catch us like this I don't even bother watching those matches then

That's why I don't blame those who left arsenal to support other clubs ; Wenger really do us strong thing post-2006.

The funny thing is ; it's not only big teams that show us shege, teams struggling with relegation also out-muscle us with physical players against our youngins.

I'm glad the same board he was doing their bidding eventually let him go when he was no longer useful to them.

I read when tony pulls and olofinjana said they don't train for arsenal
All they do is force them to play throw in close to our box
Delap will always find them because they out muscle our boys not just him arladyce, even deeney and evra threw shots at the team
Arteta was part of this team no wonder his boys are physical with opponents
That Porto match at the Emirates have the most fouls, if that was wengay boys they will out muscle them

.

I know many guys will not want to cut Wenger some slack but Tottenham are having a similar issue with their stadium.
Eventually Harry Kane left.

Mourinho, Conte and Co. all complained about LEVY.

U guys are looking at only the football aspects.
See there was a time Everton were buying players anyhow.
But their revenue still remain the same that's why them dey dock.points now.

No manager will like to sell his best players unless the players want to leave.

Arsenal was first to completely build a new stadium.

Others want to do additions now.

Top four every year for 19 years is no joke even with good players ask Liverpool.

If u are building a brand from the scratch. It's not that easy.
