Despite the opposition of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Julius Abure has been re-elected as the National Chairman of Labour Party for a second term by a unanimous affirmation of delegates.

Abure was declared the winner during the party’s national convention that held on Wednesday in Nnewi, Anambra State.

as Labour Party bars Journalists from covering its National Convention

The Labour Party has banned Journalists from covering its National Convention holding at Grand Seasons Hotel in Nnewi, Anambra State. There is heavy security presence at the hotel and this is not unconnected with the crisis rocking the political party.

Series of calls and text messages sent to the spokesman of the party, Obiorah Ifoh, urging him to allow journalists with tags access into the venue was rebuffed. Similarly, about five presons who were seen as intruders and hoodlums were also arrested and whisked away by the police to its headquarters in the state for questioning.

The intruders were accused of distributing inciting leaflets critical of the leadership of the party. They were accused of trying to cause a crisis at the ongoing convention. A party source said the intention of the criminal elements and their sponsors was to destabilize the convention.

Recall that the Labour Party has been experiencing crisis following party leadership tussle over who becomes the national chairman of the party, a move many political watchers see as discouraging.

To be fair, if Abure had not done what he did by preventing the Obidients or NLC from contesting in that LP Exco election, obidients would fill up the leadership & excos of the party from top to bottom.

He knew this from early 2023. In 2022, they were welcoming Obidients into the party fold by offering membership, but he and the current excos later realised that if that continued, Obidients would have the numbers to topple the current leadership of the party where he is the chairman. They would fill all the excos positions with their own anointed Obidient; hence, no money for him to chop again as he would be relegated. They immediately stopped offering membership and blocked new people from getting membership cards.

Finally, Abure don carry Obidients for handicap. They were still trying to disrupt the convention and eventually put their own man (Isaac Balami) in that position. Abure can now enforce his rules that will lock out lots of Obidients from executive positions in the party.
