Discos Make N1tn Amid Grid Crisis, Unmetered Customers Hit 5.8m by Poisonousman(op): 7:30am On Apr 02, 2024
Despite the persistent epileptic power supply nationwide, revenue generation by electricity distribution companies in Nigeria surged to N1.1trn within the 12 months of 2023, a new report has revealed.

The figure represents an increase of N234.4bn or 28.2 per cent from the N831bn generated by the power firms over a similar period in 2022.

This latest data was disclosed in the electricity report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday.

The latest data came despite the sporadic power grid collapses recorded during the year.

Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed 46 times from 2017 to 2023, a report by the International Energy Agency said in a report.

According to the report, Nigerians endured more nationwide blackouts in 2023, especially on September 14 when the grid collapsed due to a fire on a major transmission line.

Despite the challenges, the distribution companies have continued to smile at the bank, allocating outrageous billing to customers.

Government is talking about removing power subsidy when DISCOs are posting profits of N1trn.

APC is just out to punish the masses while feeding fat from our common wealth

This is unfair and unjust.

Reason why people move to saner climes where they get value for every penny spent.

We are our own worst enemy, they have crippled alot of businesses with their epileptic power supplies yet they are smiling to the bank. I'll continue to say it, an average Nigerian is greedy and self centered.

This happens because there is no repercussion for excess billings

They increased the tariffs and reduced the power supply

All we can do is grumble and endure

Discos are as corrupt as NEPA.

If you have your way, bypass your meter. They can't reap where they didn't sow.

All this money the government is accumulation from fuel, electricity and so on, i haven't seen what it's been used for yet o.

Discos should be pressured to clear the loans they owe banks. Now that efforts are ongoing to get states to generate, transmit and distribute power, the government shouldn't renew their licences when they expire.

Every state, not regions, should be encouraged to generate, transmit and distribute power for itself using available resources.

There is no difference between them and Nepa. The so called privatasion done by the GEJ Administration was all Sakamanje. It was all a change of Name.

So called new investors into the power sector that didn't bring in new infrastructure. They only took over old Nepa offices. Did MTN or GLO and others take over Nitel offices?

That shows you,it is all a ruse.

9years after these ones too came into power, they are making it seem as if getting 247 electricity in African's most populous country is rocket science

Do the DISCOS pay to the president of Nigeria the community levies the DISCOS collect from Nigerians without supplying electricity?
If the DISCOS don't, how come the president has kept quiet over this monumental FRAUD by the DISCOS? DISCOS further squeeze the poor through imposition of monthly community levy without electricity supplied. DISCOS have defied all directives to issue pay as you consume meter to clients. Once again, is the president involved in this DISCO FRAUD?

These are the same greedy merchants and capitalists who regularly bribe NERC to Increase tariffs upon suffering Nigerians. Chai! The worst is Abakaliki, especially Hatchery layout where you hardly have light, yet the DISCO here comes with outrageous bills. Even to help the Hatchery Estate install an already acquired transformer is impossible for this DISCO. Barth Nnaji and your Geometric Power Limited, please kindly visit Ebonyi State.

They are not cashing out. That business is not profitable. They are owing banks billions of naira and the government is even helping to pay part of our power bills. The government shouldn't renew their licences. Every state should start generating and transmitting its power unaided.

Nigerian Power sector would go down as the biggest heist of the 21st Century..

The story would be told someday..

Of how people in darkness in the midst of hardship are being estimatedly billed N15k - N50k/month depending on the size of the house..

Of how some people deliberately frustrate the provision of meters because they make a kill from estimated billings..

Of how the distribution and generating companies were shared for cronies in and out of government. And still the people and industries remain in darkness ten years after.

Of how Nigerians enjoy more hours without power in a day than with power..

Of how the power sectors became a cesspool of corruption across 5 different governments..

Of how Nigerians are meant to cough out hundreds of thousands just to obtain a meter for their house.. but the meter belongs to the electricity companies..

Of how every rain that falls, power goes off for 5 days.. that's the time it takes to dry the wires

The story would be told someday 🤔

The DISCO operators pray that commensurate electricity supply never returns to Nigeria. The DISCOS would wish system collapse all year long, after all, by month end the DISCO operators are assured of their trillion Naira profit through community billing.
