The tradition exist in my village, it may not make sense to you (even me) but it is a tradition that has existed for long. Although where i am from, it is not compulsory for the widow to re-marry the late husbands family member.

I know an ex girlfriend from Anambra whose elder sister was put through that horrible experience, it was like 10years ago though. But i believe this and many other horrible traditions are still being practiced in many tribes in the Country. Just like how they said Osu Caste tradition has been abolished but a friend of mine was denied the chance to marry is beautiful girlfriend, because she is a Osu from Enugu State. I blamed (scolded self) him though for accepting his families stand on the matter..

Maybe I'm not too familiar with how it plays in the South East, but from what I've heard about this particular custom it's not as deep as is being portrayed here...the one I've heard it's usually a male child they "remarry" the woman to, so it's more in saying you're still part of us, and less in saying person X (adult male) would continue where our son stopped, and the traditionao rite in question does not prevent the woman from marrying if she so desires.

I have never experienced it as an Igbo. I have lost my dad, aunts, uncles, and so on, and never did i see anybody drink it

I even started this year with a burial in Imo, and nobody drank anything.

Maybe others who are Igbos can share their personal experiences, but i have never seen it happen
