EFCC Threatens Legal Action Against Odinkalu Over “Uncouth Commentaries” On Bobrisky’s Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, over his recent comments on the arrest of Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

In a press statement released by the Commission, the EFCC described Odinkalu’s remarks as “reckless” and “unbecoming of a former head of a major government agency.” Odinkalu had criticized the EFCC’s arrest of Bobrisky, labeling it as evidence of idleness or an abuse of power.

The EFCC emphasized that Bobrisky was arrested and arraigned on the basis of clear cases of abuse of the Naira, to which he has pleaded guilty. The Commission further stated that while Odinkalu has the right to free speech as a Nigerian, such a right should be exercised with decorum and responsibility.

The EFCC warned that it would not hesitate to take appropriate legal actions against such uncouth commentaries against its lawful mandate by anyone, and advised Odinkalu to ventilate his “rascally opinions” more responsibly in future situations.

Bobrisky’s arrest has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the EFCC’s priorities in light of more pressing issues facing the country, such as the recent hike in electricity tariffs, corruption in government and the judiciary, and security challenges.

Odinkalu, in his defense of Bobrisky, argued that the real problems facing Nigeria, including the rigging of elections, looting of the treasury, and the rise of insurgent groups like Boko Haram and bandits, should be the focus of the public and the EFCC.’

Is the prosecution of anyone that abuses the Naira part of statutory functions of the EFCC or nothuh

While it is true that Nigeria has loads of security and financial challenges to deal with, mitigating against the abuse of Naira is also a challenge.

EFCC have not done anything outside their operations.

Odinkalu should know when to rest...he can't ask a law enforcement agent to look away because a crime committed, according to his own standard, is of a "lesser" degree to other crimes.

Abuse of Naira is not a financial crime. It is a misdemeanor that police should prosecute in a magistrate court.

Abuse of naira is a violation of CBN act 2007 and it can collaborate with any regulatory and law enforcement agency whenever there is a violation. NPF, ICPC, EFCC, FIRS, NFIU, any of these agencies could collaborate with CBN to enforce such a law.

.

The role of the police and EFCC are interwoven when it comes to economic and financial crime.

CBN uses lot of money to print Naira notes...abuse of the Naira including, spraying, mutilating, writing, squeezing are offences that can shorten the lifecycle of the notes and force the CBN to withdraw them from circulation and print new currency...spending more.

So, depending on how we see it, either economic or financial crime...it will fall under any of the two..and the EFCC has power to coordinate and enforce all economic and financial crime laws and enforcement functions conferred on any person or authority.

I have to agree with kalu here.... Instead of going after people on d run like yahaya bello.... Na bobrisky una dey arrest, d court would ask him to pay a fine... He'll pay it and at d end of d day you've succeeded in making him more popular.....

Go after corrupt politicians if u have work to do

I wish them well.
