LASG Meets Community Over Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Project by Karemarealty288(op): 11:40am On Apr 06, 2024
Officials from the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, led by the commissioner, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, have sought the patience and understanding of residents of the Iru area of the state, particularly those that would be affected by the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project by the Federal Government.

A statement on Thursday said Benson-Awoyinka made the plea during a stakeholders engagement session held at the palace of the paramount traditional ruler of Iru Land, Oba Abdulwasiu Abisogun II, the Oniru of Iru Land.

The commissioner, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Oloruntoyin Atekoja, and other top officials of the ministry, noted that the gathering was aimed at discussing the potential impact of the road project on the community and local businesses.

Benson-Awoyinka gave the assurance that proactive measures would be taken by both the federal and the state governments to mitigate the challenges.

She said, “Everything that we have discussed here today will be taken back to the Governor of Lagos State, and whatever needs to be done will be done. We will look into how to get timely compensation for affected persons because the Lagos State Government will not leave the community members to bear any burden that comes with this project alone.”

On his part, Oba Abisogun expressed his gratitude for the engagement and reiterated the importance of maintaining open communication channels between the government and the community.

The Federal Government in March said it had commenced the construction of a 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Orji Uchenna, in Abuja.

It came a week after the Federal Executive Council approved a contract worth N1.067tn for the first phase of the highway’s construction.

The works minister said the 47.47km dual carriageway has five lanes on each side and a train track in the middle. Umahi explained that it formed part of the 700km road spanning nine states, with two spurs leading up north, noting that the facility would be constructed with concrete.

Lagos is the only state functioning in South west because of the federal government support it enjoys

Other south west state like Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Ogun states are dead-beat states .

Can someone tell me why this project is more critical than investing that money in the almost-dead power sector? A country of 220 million is generating less than 5k megawatts of power in 2024. Instead of investing massively in power generation across the country, FG would rather splash #1.06 trillion (almost the entire budget of the FCT) on a road project where there's an existing road connecting the same route.

Many companies and businesses close shop because we have epileptic power supply, yet no government declares a national power emergency! Is it that we don't understand priorities in this country or there is a value this project will deliver that I don't see?

It seems private company has been allowed to take up power project and tariff increased.
This will give the government more power penalized those who don't supply adequate power.
This road to me is important because no train is linking southwest to southeast where we have many travelers before buhari thought of linking us to Niger.

The FG cannot handle power. It is time for the States and private sector to step up/in.

Hope those communities or businesses that will be affected by the highway will be properly compensated. This is a very good project that will improve our export sector by linking two major port cities.

You have said it all.
PS: Nigeria's power situation is deliberate. Its a deliberate choice made by an elite that benefit from it.

Bro the road goes to South south, it doesn't even go to the south east. This project makes no economic sense.

What is the use of linking two port cities? Is it that a particular kind of commodity cannot be shipped by one particular port city so there needs to be a road linking the two? Please I want see the sense in it. That money should have been used to expand those ports to the size of Apapa and thereby make them modern with automation involved to reduce bottlenecks. The have a train track linking them to the Nigerian hinterland cities and south east. That way Nigeria becomes a transit hub for shipping linking West Africa to Central Africa. The problem is we have leaders that cannot think far. As we speak the maritime hub of West Africa is Ghana and Ivory Coast even Cotonou we have lost so much shipping opportunities to them.

Apart from the experimental subsidy removal that caused problems, which government contributed to infrastructural development in less than one year than Tinubu?

The other SW states are far ahead of your SE by a long shot. You should return to your landlocked jungle instead of rushing to the SW on a daily basis.

Was consultation not made before the project was awarded ? Or is there something someone is not telling the government?

Engineering wise the Rail track should be built not at the middle of the road but at either of the sides.
Accident from Automobiles or that of train will be very fatal if the track is laid at the middle.
