The speedometer app on my phone is 98% accurate on measuring vehicle speed. I assume it will be the same for a ferry.

You can check the Ikorodu ferry terminal that ply Lekki, VI and Ajah routes.
Definitely incorrect. Put it this way, Titanic speed was 23 knots or 42 km/HR when it struck the iceberg and it was going for world record Atlantic crossing. Boat don't move that fast

If it moved this slow, how did it move from Ikorodu to VI in 45 minutes?

Another person who uses that Ferry terminal can confirm this.

An average yoruba person who study up to waec level wiltl definitely know what "eedegberin" is except the person is a dullard cos 'onka yoruba' is taught from elementary level to secondary level. Most people now don't know/care the meaning of some words nowadays cos core yoruba is spoken only in some places in osun, ogun, oyo etc as speaking english is what importance is placed on. Words like "ifaara, isipo, gbena-gbena," etc may sound alien to most average people tho cos there are some words I've heard that sound foreign to me
The issue is not whether the topic was taught or not, it's about how many people actually remember anything about it.

It's just the same way those guys may have heard the word INCULCATE before used in sentences but can't even remember what it means.

She is responsible for their safety and should have provided life jackets. If the movie producer insists on them wearing life jackets, most of them will comply. Junior Pope, who appeared scared to the max about drowning in one of the circulating clips, would surely have made use of a life jacket if he had the option.

It is a recurring them in Nigeria, whereby people who should ensure the safety of their workers do not uphold their end of the bargain. That leads to electrical workers suffering electrocutions, and construction workers suffering falls, etc.
I understand it is the producer's duty to provide life jacket but I also believe the actors themselves owe themselves duty of care not to board the boat having confirmed the life jackets were not provided.

I wonder what Blacklisting the producer will achieve. It's not like almost everybody is not guilty of the offence they are accusing the producer of.

Let's hope they AGN as a group will take safety issues serious and not just stop at this reactive measures instead of being proactive going forward

How many km is a straight line across the sea from Ikorodu to VI? You should be able to work out your speed from there using 45 mins

Is this what you call Ferry? This is a speedboat, not a ferry - but it still won't do 110km/hr, highest 60 to 80

These speedboat are what people generally refer to as Ferry on Lagos waters and they ate very fast like he claimed.

People living In Ìkoròdu but working at VI or CMS/Marina always prefer it because of its speed, but is very very unsafe. I had one one boss that will park his official and personal cars at home to join these boats cos it saves him from traffic. But each time there's a reported case of a boat mishap ( which happens at least once in 3 months); everybody starts calling his number to check on him hoping his boat was not affected.

People get mind for this country sha. It can never be me

Some of these guys are not that educated. They are just talented footballers
Some of these players attended academies through secondary school where they train for most of the day while their mates are learning in class
They are no different from Ikpeba, Taiye Taiwo we have here. Minus their football talents some of them will be agberos and bandits

An uneducated will still be uneducated whether he is Nigerian or Oyinbo

So my fears were legitimate. I imagined the boat capsizing 20 times before we got to VI. Sometimes, the speed will coincide with a water wave and the boat will suspend in the air for a second before landing.

I started suspecting it is not safe when I saw boys I assume are divers perching around the boat before it moves.

You can't place legal culpability on the victims. If people knowingly enter the bus of a drunk driver, it still does not absolve the drunk driver of blame. One can criticize them for being foolish, but being foolish is not an offense against the law. Why the victims did not insist on life jacket is secondary in this instance. The producer's duty is to make the jackets available and ensure the filming is carried out in a safe manner.

In terms of everybody doing it, that is the way of life. Na who dem catch be thief, but everybody is doing it is never an excuse.

I can't enter covered speedboat

If they take off the cover, no wam, at least man can dive in the water if things go left than be trapped in a cabin

I was sailing in Shetlands once and my boat overturned. It actually overturned many times cos I was still learning to sail. But this time my legs got snagged in the rigging ropes. Till today, I don't know how I undid the ropes from my legs and resurfaced.

I've also had an incident in Amadi Creek near Ipukulu when I was younger. We were playing in the shallows and one of my friend that can't swim got swept out by waves from a passing flying boat. They dredged the river so there was a steep drop off and the wave swept him past the drop off. I went to save him from behind which is the position I had read in encyclopedia for saving a drowning person as below. The nigga panicking turned around, grabbed me and sat ontop of me. So I was kicking underwater while his head was above enjoying fresh air, meanwhile I'm underwater and kicking for both of us. I started losing energy and I don't know how I summoned strength to throw him off me eventually before I could calm him down 2nd time round to take him to shore.

It still won't do 110km/hr. Ikorodu to VI by water is most likely not more than 30km(probably less). Even if the boat does it in 30mins, that is just about 60km/hr.

Ur fears are clearly legitimate. One day when I was expressing my fears to that my oga on how dangerous the whole journey sounds ; he bluntly told me I don't want to know how dangerous it can get.

He said he once boarded one and suddenly he saw the operator dive into the lagoon. Only for him go come up with the boat engine in his hands. Like the boat engine literally removed and only the boat operator knew.

I just feel the whole journey is a risk not worth taking at all.

I was just agreeing with his time frame. I still doubt if we were doing 120km/hr on boat.

Exactly, some words won't just come to u. In fact there are some Yoruba names that people bear that u won't even know the meaning as a Yoruba person except u ask the bearer of the name what it means.

This is the problem in this country; safety for human lives means nothing. Regular maintenance on these boats could have avoided most of the casualties recorded. Actually, some boats there should be scrapped and some life jackets changed. (How the hell do you give someone torn life jacket)

With the way that terminal is run, you will think it's subsidized by the government. Heard they increased fares from 700 to 2k after fuel subsidy removal. So 2k to convey up to 40 people is 60k for less than 45 minutes trip.

Did you learn to swim formally through swim school or just from neighbors

Most of us from hinterland never got to swim and till date I avoid water. While working in Naija, we had a work trip to La campaign Tropicana and they divided us into groups for people to go on the sea.

I refused totally. If that will make me not be a team player then I am willing to accept that badge. One of the guys who went on the sea, their boat rocked and he fell into the sea. Na real struggle to pull him out and he was big like 6ft3, 110kg guy. The guy was shaken by the time he got offshore.

I was just praising myself for resisting the peer pressure to get on a boat cos I believe in Murphy's law, Anything that can go wrong will go wrong

Same thing when I had a project at Bonny, I always insisted on flying, rather than take those ferry's

I tried learning swimming as an adult sef, Its still a struggle

The funny thing is Lagos state government has an agency for almost everything. There's an official agency in charge of regulating players in the water-ways transportation but those people working in those agency would not do their jobs.

Normally they should have staff stationed at those jetties to supervise the compliance level with safety measures and stop any boat/ferry from loading if it's not in good shape. But what do we have? Nothing. It's only when major mishap happens u start seeing them reeling out figures of people dead, missing or survivors.

It will keep u wondering what happen to preventing the initial incident?

I learned officially at age 4 in swimming pool with a coach. I think it was either Agip or Elf that had a swimming pool in Trans-Amadi area. Then we also lived near various rivers and play with our friends and were members of Shell club where we go every week. Even if you can't swim, it's a must to get your children training.
