In a statement issued on Saturday, the group's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described the examinations as illegal and unacceptable by any standard because they were taken on days declared as public holidays by the Nigerian Government.

An Islamic human rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has declared examinations taken in two universities in Enugu on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024 as illegal, null and void.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the group's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described the examinations as illegal and unacceptable by any standard because they were taken on days declared as public holidays by the Nigerian Government.

The group called for the cancellation of the examination and tests.

It said, "Reports reaching us from the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC) and the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, reveal that both institutions ignored the holidays declared on Tuesday and Wednesday by the Federal Government (FG). While the former conducted examinations on Salah day, the latter held two tests on that day.

"These are acts of insubordination and outright disobedience on the part of the vice chancellors of both institutions. We expect the minister of education to take up the matter with them. Failure to call them to order will only egg them further to act arrogantly against policies and decisions of FG in future.

"It has never been heard that a university based in the Muslim-dominated North conducted an examination or test during a Christmas or Easter holiday. Some authorities in the South-East are out-Heroding Herod in their quest to persecute Muslims by all means.

“Islamophobia is becoming rampant in that zone but what is surprising is that, this time, it is coming from higher institutions where people are expected to be more liberal.

"Meanwhile we are constrained to declare both the examination and the tests taken in both universities as illegal, illegitimate, unlawful and unconstitutional. They are ultra vires, null and void.”

The organisation called on the vice-chancellors of the two schools “to ensure that no student, whether Muslim or Christian, who missed the examination or the tests is sanctioned”.

It continued, “Those events never happened. There was simply no examination. Neither was there any test because nothing of that nature is expected to happen during a properly declared holiday.

“At least there is ample evidence that the holidays were announced ahead of time and long enough for all members of the public to be fully aware.

"That examination and those two tests constitute a void, a sham, a nullity and anything built on nullity remains a nullity.

“That examination never took place in UNEC and no tests were held in the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu. That is the position of the law.
"No examination or test held in any school, polytechnic or university on a public holiday can be recognized by the law. A public holiday is holiday period for all and sundry, civil servants, teachers, lecturers and students. The law does not recognize invigilators and candidates on public holidays.

"MURIC advises the two vice-chancellors, through the deans of the erring faculties, with the active participation of the heads of departments, to instruct the lecturers to cancel the ill-conceived, bitterness-loaded and luciferous examination and tests.

“They never took place. This is the soft landing we can offer the erring lecturers, department and faculty.

"It is our fervent hope that nobody will make any attempt to massage egos because both the heads of departments and the deans of the faculties where this abnormality occurred may have to explain the reason for their dereliction of duty. Damage-control measures may be too late at that time."

Why didn't they write the exams during Esther? Would those schools have allowed exams fixed on Christmas day for the students?

Putting Muslim students in that situation is wrong.

Official religious holidays should be respected by government institutions.

Anyone supporting such act must be very foolish. The schools should be sanctioned by Ministry of Education.

It is actually a sensible statement.

Is a federal school bigger than its own federal government that declared a public holiday?

Would I as a Christian attend to exams on an Easter Monday that is declared as a public holiday?

Whoever thought he was bigger than the federal government, need to be humbled back to reality.

The mumu should go and cancel the results if he has proof that no government office opened all over Nigeria that same day.

Christmas has a fixed date.

You guys will use moon sighting to declare public holiday. The system of islam is not compatible with Nigerian education sector.

Tone down your ego before it is too late.

When a wrong is done, admit it and make amends or face the penalty.

Is Good Friday or Easter Monday a fixed day?

You did not even comment about the wrong action of the school?

It is not uncommon to find very high handed lecturers who think they are above the law.

What is left to be seen is if the school management is also above the Federal Government that own the school.

What right does a sane employee of the federal government have to undo a federal Holiday?

That insanity that some have nurtured, it is time we force a cure on them.

it is not about right or insanity, calm down and stop being overtly emotional .
There are many situations which can make a lecturer fix exam on an odd day ,if you actually had the experience you would understand.noboby is trying to ridicule your religion before you start chanting that rhyme you normally chant.

I am a Christian, and even if I was a traditional religion worshipper, a public holiday must remain sacrosanct.

i have written exam on boxing day ,our lecturer was to travel abroad the following day
I have also written exam on a sunday preceding a strike action .
There are several reasons not that i support it but even soldiers are trained to be ready anytime any day besides mumuric is seen as a controversial bigoted group that shouldn't be the one calling it out because other religious bigots might understand it out of context.

I don't really like this MURIC professor because of his eccentric behavior in the pass but he is obviously right on this , why would a university fixed exams for public holiday? Whether it's Muslim, Christian's or pagans holiday it's not a proper thing to do , FG should sanctions them truly

Bro, you're not making any sense.

Because our ancestors used to beat their wives, does that make domestic violence acceptable?
If you were too weak to stand up for yourself, then don't hold others back.
This shouldn't even be up for argument.
