The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has taken disciplinary action against accredited officials involved in an incident where a hijab-wearing female candidate was asked to remove her head cover before sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).


The board swiftly addressed the issue, allowing the candidate to proceed with the examination while expressing regret over the incident.


In a statement released by Dr Fabian Benjamin, the Public Communication Advisor of JAMB, the examination body announced sanctions against its accredited officials in the incident involving a hijab-wearing candidate.

The incident occurred at the Bafuto Institute in Ejigbo, Lagos, and sparked concerns after being reported by various news platforms.

Part of the statement read: “The attention of the board was drawn to an unfortunate incident at the Bafuto Institute, Ile-Iwe Bus Stop, Ejigbo, Lagos, where it was reported by Muslim News of Sunday, April 21, 2024, and other platforms, that a candidate donning hijab was asked to remove her head cover during the accreditation process before being allowed into the examination hall.

“The board deeply regretted the incident and, on investigation, discovered that this particular incident or others in the past is not linked to any of its examination guidelines but rather a product of the misplaced priority of some of the board’s accredited partners or officials who claimed ignorance of the board’s guidelines on accreditation, which ensures that all candidates are screened, allowing only female officials to screen female candidates before allowing them to gain entrance into the hall.”

Additionally, the statement noted that approximately 1.2 million candidates would have completed the UTME by the specified date, indicating the scale and significance of the examination.

It baffles me how the government acted swiftly to the issue of a piece of clothe called hijab, and the same government has refused to do nothing about the killers of Deborah who burnt an innocent girl alive, video-recording it with their faces showing on the camera with such udacity, and nothing would happen attitude . If the government can swiftly act to an issue regarding a piece of some dirty clothes, what happens to lives of the innocent people that have unjustly taken by these same Muslim fanatics??

Is a piece of clothes under which the Muslim terrorists have hidden severally to reck havock by suicide bombings and other security risks worth more than lives unjustly taken ??

If this what peace is all about in the so called religion of peace, I reject this kind of religion that represents nothing but problems and wars wherever they find themselves with an appreciable population.

Well, with biometrics the way it is, whether the girl wears hijab or not, she would be found out by biometrics.

The staff overreacted there. Simple. Nothing to do with religion. I am not a muslim, I know they got issues, but JAMB did the right thing in apologising.

I don't know their problem, Islam has gone far globally than you can imagine.

I don't understand how people mix religion with civic matters. Religion has done more harm than good to many Nigerians (especially in psychology). If you can't abandon your religious practice for civic matters, then go to sharia/Islamic school..

It's quite apparent that we're operating two distinct laws in the country; government and sharia laws ...

They are mad. People that wish to do malpractice ll now put them in hijab. Religion should be differentiated from academics and those to be given preference of dressing should v those that ll search them. Soon, Catholic sisters go wear their own too.
A country that claims fairness but isn't practicing it. Traditional worshippers too fit carry their dressing style enter cos constitution permits them but it's not being done cos they are minorities! In fact, taro practicers are the most docile and non vocal in Nigeria who needs to exercise all their rights!
That 1999 constitution permits and forbade lots of things but fear no let many carry am out. And many don't even know their rights!

What she trying to prevent the candidate from hiding anything in it during the exam?

If it's the long hijab it should be removed . If you're to cover your hair as a Muslim lady , you can do that with scarfs or the smaller hijabs , anything other than this should not be encouraged in the examination hall. It's simple.
