I honestly do not support this. So if a child graduates from secondary school at 15 and clears his/her WAEC. What the government is telling us is that if the child's parents cannot afford a private school, the child would stay idle at home for 3 years before giving university education a shot.

That's like delaying the academic advancement of that child. Very bad if you ask me.

And for the records, I finished my secondary education at the age of 15.
No wonder devil is black

The answer is straight forward. It's a leverage because you always look down on the North as being UNEDUCATED. Mind you, there is Quota system in the United States of America too which blacks enjoy because whites have always claim that black are not intelligent and should be given a chance.

Goo read more about affirmative action, blacks were denied the right to even read a book before the abolition of slavery. This is more like compensation for stalling their advancement. Don't say what you don't know

This should be sponsored as a bill and inevitably become a law. One of the many advantages are: anyone who finishes secondary school at 16 should learn a good skill before varsity. Our youths are so unproductive after varsity because they have no skills and add no value to the society. This will reduce high rate of prostitvtion (hook-up) and internet fraud (yahoo) for those will venture into them because of lack of job. grin grin

And what stops them from learning the skill after graduation when they're of legal age to work. Ever heard of child labor?

This is a rubbish policy. 16 years is ok. Don't let's children waste their time doing nothing.
Re: FG Sets 18 Years As Minimum Entry Age Into Tertiary Institutions by mcjendol: 11:16pm On Apr 22
Parents need to wake up not every child will need a University education discover your child's talent, and gift on time so you can guide them as a parent.
If you must go to the university ensure you acquire a skill first there are 2-year technical schools.
Re: FG Sets 18 Years As Minimum Entry Age Into Tertiary Institutions by frog12: 11:16pm On Apr 22

Aboki haff come again. Enough people have entered university at 15 16 and 17 and turned out well. It is also a counter against the failure of the govt where a four year course can run for 7 years.
Re: FG Sets 18 Years As Minimum Entry Age Into Tertiary Institutions by Amah70: 11:17pm On Apr 22
In the UK for example, you have to be accepted into the university if you're under 18. Your age and maturity will be considered as well as your academic achievements. There is also no upper limit anywhere, but again your acceptance would be based on your perceived ability to cope as an undergraduate.

Nigeria Minister, please don't obstruct the chances of exceptionally brilliant kids to enter into the university as early as they can.

The university is not a place to graduate to look only for government jobs.
The forced NYSC is already a cut from the development cycle of Nigeria's youths.

Don't carpet every child in Nigeria by use of the bogus term - federal government to make suppressive laws.
Restructuring Nigerian politically will solve this problem of Nigerian groups drawing other groups backwards through hiding under bogus federal government.
Did president Bola Tinubu vet this age limit law before hand? Not likely.

Entrepreneurship courses are already in the university.
You can't force everyone to get a skill it's by choice.

Why is this govt trying hard to frustrate the growth of its citizens? What concerns govt if someone is entering school at 16? For Christ's sake there are gifted kids who finish uni at 18 abroad. Crude islam actually takes a country backward

I knew the Minister has got to be from a certain part of Nigeria where they breed out of school children as soon as I saw this thread.

Aren't there more fundamental issues the Minister should be looking at? Imagine, how does this retrogressive idea help in improving the poor quality of education?

Sincerely it's on the high side. 16 years is ok. Most people that have gone to change the world don't know what to do with their degrees, untill final years, even some dropped out. The essence of education is to enlighten the mind, and 16 years is not too young for that.
Re: FG Sets 18 Years As Minimum Entry Age Into Tertiary Institutions by roscoman: 11:22pm On Apr 22
It is a good decision in right direction. If a student writes WAEC at 16 years of age, he should proceed to learn a skill jobs before gaining an admission into University.

I think government should enact a bill that would mandated children to enter either primary school or creche at 3 years old. Not unlike when they start school at 1.

Parents should also be warn not to push their children to school when they supposed to be engaging in something else most especially in mother's tongue.

We worked in an office and the ways the so called graduates behaved is worrisome. They were not matured in everything and what coursed it is because the have missed a stage in there life.

Finally Nigeria Federal government should enact a law to that effect for children to start primary school at age 3 while tertiary institutions to 18 years .

A University is not a place for minors in my humble opinion. A person who finishes secondary school at 15 can still do quite a lot. Advanced Levels. Language Classes. Music, Sports, the Arts. Become a rounded adult and go into Uni at 18. I agree with the policy.

Hope you'll also provide the fees for all these since una wan dey help people train their children grin

studying what?

Rubbish policy. Allow them to graduate young and add value to the system while their brains are still very active.

I graduated from the University at 18 and I have never regretted it for a day. It took me several years to get my first full-time job that I was truly satisfied with. So government ought to factor that also.

You want to waste their productive years in a country where employers will be asking for 4 years work experience at 22.

angry sad

I'm tired of dealing with these kids and their crass stupidity of young adults all in the name of interacting with first year students

Smiles......... But the 6-3-3-4 educational system is no more applicable in most parts of Nigeria. Even JAMB saw this and fixed 16 years as minimum age to write JAMB.

16 years is rational, times have changed. Review the 6-3-3-4 system to the reality on Ground..... 5-2-3-4 system or 5-3-2-4 system and draw up a curriculum that can embrace this new change.

Many Jobs interview fix max age at 25years. If you enter some 9ja uni at 18 years for a 5 years course na 6 years you go spend and that takes you to 24 years.... Add NYSC and you are 25/26 years.......Not Eligible to apply for some juicy jobs.

Leave it at 16 years, many will gain admission at 17/18 years normally..... In case Dem write JAMB 2/3 times.

Is it normal for a lecturer to shout at students?

Is that not abuse?

If the lecturer cannot control his/her temper, then they shouldn't be with students.

superjaks:
I support this gesture from FG

We need mature minds in the universities not babies

Imagine a lecturer shouted at a student and the next thing is the student starting crying 😂

More reason we're having weak men in the society now

I got into a federal university at the age of 16, graduated with First class and have completed my doctorate. A pause would have destroyed my momentum.
