Samuelriano1: Some parents are paying heavily to the schools but the proprietors are greedy. They pay peanuts to the teachers. Every private school must have school governors comprising of parents and teachers and proprietor. The governors should determine how much a teacher earns. Otherwise the poor pay of teachers will never stop and poor results will continue despite the investment by parents on their kids education. Parents must also monitor their children’s progress in school and not just dump money and leave everything to the school alone. |

The students are to blame. They don't read anymore. They spend all their time pressing phone from tiktok to Facebook to Instagram to WhatsApp etc. Students need to wake up. 2 Likes |

santaclaws:I am not here to fight you as everyone has an opinion but I don’t agree with this. Firstly, we did the same examination during our time. Very stiff times at that, when the cut off was generally 200 and it was not as bad as this. We learnt these A’level stuff that you claim ourselves and people that had the money attended tutorial classes. Not that I agree with you that they are tested on A’levels. Secondly, the exam has even been watered down because of the use of CBT and then time factor as they cannot be sitting for as much as 3 hours 40 mins like during our time when it was pencil based test. So some of the hard calculations are no longer much. I even heard some young one say it was just about 3-4 calculation questions in Physics and Chemistry each. It wasn’t like that during our time. The number of questions they even answer in each subjects have been heavily reduced because if these factors. Finally, they have more advanced technology than we had but this technology is rather serving as a distraction. Because during our time we didn’t have much browsing phones, access to internet to be able to use video services like YouTube and there were not much academic contents in YouTube then compared to now. We only relied on past questions and solutions from people we believed were experts. So I don’t see why the Ministry of education should be solely blamed. Everybody is a stakeholder in education so we all are to be blamed in one way or the other. Schools have their own blame to, most private schools now spoon feed and help in examination malpractice just to soothe the parents and it is now telling the more. Not that it was not like this during my time, it was not just as much as this. Jamb is almost impossible to have examination malpractice penetrate, that is why we see the true test. Come to think of it, a multiple choice question exam like Jamb is supposed to be the easiest to pass compared to WAEC and NECO and yet, a lot pass the latter than the earlier. This shows the level of malpractice that schools organize. I rest my case here. In your last point, don’t we practice that here in Nigeria? Is that not what the IJMB, JUPEB, Diploma and Cambridge is for? Of course the option has always been there. |

This result isn’t just a result of Government school but both private and missionary schools so if teachers are not teaching in Government schools, what about private and missionary schools? So I am on the opinion that the school, parent and students are to be blamed. firstly, the parent want their children too to pass out on time cause their neighbor or friends children almost finish their education. The schools gives good grades to students so that the parents wouldn't withdraw there wards from the school secondly, These students spend so much time on social media than in their books, the zeal and quest to make money has overtaken their time for their books, little SS1-3 girls who are to read their books are after boys, men and money. It is a pathetic situation. so teachers can not discipline children due to the reactions of parents and the school rules. Teachers no longer care about students welfare. cause they don't want to be sack |

edungene7: I can't but say this is a lame excuse. JAMB has been CBT for atleast 10yrs now. Before your exam day, a mock exam is conducted especially to familiarise students with CBT but MOST students don't make take the mock exam. There can be problems with server and all that but saying someone failed because of little or no knowledge of CBT in 2024 is unacceptable. |

oluwaseyi0: I beg to disagree. You'll pass if you read using JAMB syllabus. My first JAMB was CBT and my strategy was give myself a target of atleast 50/100 for each subject and a total of 200/400. Meanwhile I expect 200/400 to be poor and guess what I scored 200 but couldn't secure admission with it, the following year I scored 232 and was admitted. |

santaclaws: Yes I will say, it is their fault, parents and probably the channel in which the exams were carried out. Go and check jamb questions from 1980's till now, you will see it is still the same syllabus and questions throwing out every year. As for the computer base test, you don't expect a student who have been so used to screen for entertainments purpose to concentrate when reading or answering question on the same screen. His/her subconscious mind would've divided into partially visualise the jargon that is already in memory. These students would've performed more than this on old paper format. 248 back then was not cheap either, Law, medicine sc, pharmacy, architecture, are all above 250 but people still use below 240 to gain admission on supplementary and VC lists. Though I buy your idea of enrolling them in A level class for a year after secondary school. |

In mass failure you will need to query the common denominator. .. The exam questions were probably not based on expected curriculum..... A levels is different from O levels. |

luluman:stop assuming and think with an open mind. I was once a teacher and i gave it my best while it lasted. I made money and a lot of it despite people complaining that the job pays little. I left because i do not have passion for teaching. Will i teach again? Yes most definitely if i am not doing my current job. Do i understand the challenges? Yes i do. So please if you are teacher and you are not happy with the job kindly resign. You have no business being there. |

yemmit90: So in a situation where 100 students wrote an exam in the university and ony 24 were able to pass (with most of them having just C), while the rest 76% fail massively, you wouldn't think the lecturer in charge of the course must be held answerable for such mass failure? Your answer to the above would determine the way you think... And I sincerely hope you can think well before answering. |

theredaddy: I wrote JAMB back then too and I know very well that people still cheated. Cheating didn't start today, so let's stop the hypocrisy. Both intelligent folks and cheats were able to pass and gained admission, it's partly why some lecturers can't speak good English today. If 95% couldn't obtain a mere 250 in JAMB, I'd rather question the system that produced such a result than the students, that's my own logic. 95% is too high for me to recklessly conclude that "teenagers are unserious" and that's why they failed... 1 Like |

For me, students and parents are to be blamed. I do part- time teaching in schools. As we speak the students that registered in one of the school are not turning up for classes. Reason being that, they don't want to pay school fees for 2nd and 3rd term. Though we've covered our scheme, my intention was to treat past questions, topics they find difficult and mock exams every three weeks from second term but they failed to turn up. The first week of resumption (i.e 2nd term) I asked them to state topics giving them hard time to handle in Chemistry, surprisingly, none of them submitted till they left. I have been redeployed. I rejected SS3 in one of the school because they have two others teachers (N/B: the students were very sad when they learnt I'm not going with them to SS3), while in the former I'm the only one taking chemistry. Maybe when specimens are out, I will organize a class for them and leave them to fate. Economy is not helping matters. 2 Likes |

santaclaws:we already have A-level /direct entry programs running in our universities . What we are seeing now is not just about syllabus or expo as thesame set of students are not writing jamb every year. Education used to be a meal ticket in nigeria , but those who had that previlage were unable to sustain it , as such nigerians now take schooling as secondary and its just getting started. We must present education as a rewarding venture for people to take it seriously . Till we get to that level interest in education will keep reducing. FG is seeing it now but they wont do anything about it. Education is highly demanding as such the reward must be worth it. |
