The presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms says there is a need to increase the value-added tax (VAT) rate.

Speaking at the policy exposure and impact assessment session organised by the committee, the committee chairman, Taiwo Oyedele, also disclosed that the VAT revenue-sharing formula would be reviewed.

Oyedele added that the committee has proposed reviewing state and local governments’ share of VAT revenue to 90 percent from current 85 percent.

According to section 40 of the VAT Act, the federal government gets 15 percent of the tax revenue, states share 50 percent, and local governments share the balance of 35 percent.

The implication of the proposed new sharing structure, according to him, is that the committee is recommending reducing the federal government’s share from 15 percent to 10 percent.

“We are proposing that the federal government’s portion should be reduced from 15 percent to 10 percent. States’ portion will be increased but they would share 90 percent with local governments,” he said.

He explained that the new sharing formula for VAT is in favour of the lower tier of government because it is a tax generated at the states level.

“In 1986, we had sales tax collected by states. The military came up with VAT in 1993 and stopped sales tax so they said it would collect VAT and return 15 per cent as cost of collection and that is the 15 per cent charged today came about. But we think it is too much,”
he said.

The tax expert added that the burden of VAT should be on the ultimate consumer.

“So we must make it transparent and neutral and this is what over 100 countries where they have VAT are doing,” Oyedele said.

He stated: “Nigeria’s economy is more than 50 percent in services and if I just stop at this, many states will be broke because VAT collection will go down by more than 50 percent and it won’t even fly.

“So we therefore need to adjust the VAT rate upward. We would ensure that it doesn’t affect businesses. The only thing is to look at basic consumption from food, education, medical services and accommodation will carry zero percent VAT. So for the poor and small businesses, no VAT.”

Oyedele said other consumers will pay a bit more.

“We have spoken to businesses about it and they won’t increase the product price. We want to make sure when we do VAT reform, no one will increase the price of commodities. We will work the mathematics with the private sector,” he explained.

Oyedele also said each state should not be granted exclusive custodianship of their collections– because it would likely result in chaos.

"Widening the tax net, collect more from the people and reduce their purchasing power."
Tax!!! Constricting satanic economic policies by a utterly clueless and Incompetent government. Despite the burden of cost of living, hyper-inflation and insecurity that worsens under Tinubu administration, the government has decided to squeeze out more tax from citizens.

Nigeria is a country that subjects its citizens to providing basic amenities by themselves. Well, everyone who helped to enthrone this economic disaster of a govt must collect.

Truly failure they say has no friend, see what you wrote up here and what you wrote below, not just that you supported Tinubu but you also had expectations from him, now you are saying all politicians are the same....

They are not the same, that is like saying all men are the same, if all politicians were the same Jonathan would have done his 8 years even if Nigeria burnt to the ground....

You are also an ethnic bigot...

Don't deceive yourself, you supported nonsense into office and expected the nonsense to make sense, you're disappointed.

We all saw this coming.

Everyone knows that SW politicians only measure economic development with how much IGR they generate. Their obsession with IGR is frightening.

No wonder they always boast how the IGR of Ogun state is bigger than the whole SE.

If they get sense, they would be asking why Imo and Anambra states have a better GDP and GDP per capita than Ogun state despite Ogun huge IGR generation.

And Why is Abia, Anambra, and Imo more urbanized than Ogun even with their meager IGR?

But they no get sense.

The image below is the Urbanization rate of selected states in Nigeria.

You had the chance to choose between a tax collector and a business man, you chose the former... and when the collector comes for his tax, you cry foul.

Worse is that, all these collections are not going into the education sector, health sector, power sector or welfare of civil servants.

These multiple taxes are important to help FG raise thrillions of naira to construct the very important coastal road that 98% of Nigerians may never ply in their life time.

Seyi Tinubu is a one man cabal

See ehn... I have absolutely nothing against taxation for the great need to raise revenue nationwide.

However, who exactly are you taxing??!

The over 70 Million working people that can barely feed, transport, and access medicare?!!

If you tax away the bulk of what these people are barely managing, how do they survive, pending when those generated revenues become beneficial to them??!

...And in such an obvious corrupt climate, what is the guarantee that these taxes will ever be used for the common good of average Nigerians??!!

Questions... Questions... Questions!!!

Truth is, that is the only revenue generating formula that Tinubu knows. .

Check his antecedents. .

Instead of them to begin massive investment back into agriculture and natural mineral exploration and exportation. . As a means of diversifying the revenue / FX receipt stream, they are trying to mis-appropriated huge funds to Lagos-Calabar road. . At this critical time.

If these clowns are serious about a future for Nigeria, we should be seeing real modalities being put in-place for diversification.

It is the aggressive gra-gra (shallow & myopic) approach that the CBN is doing now that will save the economy but a true, clear and genuine blueprint that we must see now.

Useless leaders.
