Forget it. Fact is most of the fierce anti-osu campaigners in public are usually the first to send their relatives in the villages to go 'ask questions' before aggreging to marriage proposals for their sons and daughters.

Everyone sends people to ask questions before any marriage commences. It's custom and even biblical. The questions are important to understand the kind of family, your child is to be married to, their history,characters and attributes.
My community don't have this osu caste so i can't understand the stigma attached to it.

I read from multiple sources years back that the Osu caste system is practiced in ALL the Ibo States and it's been tough to stop it till this very moment because investigations are usually still conducted into the family backgrounds or lineages of those who are about to get married to avoid getting married into the families of Osus or social outcastes within each community. It turns out that some of those from Osu families have to marry outside Iboland due to the stigma and the worse aspect is that if a non-Ibo woman marries a male Ibo Osu, then she too and her children automatically become Osus by association. The same thing too applies to a female Ibo Osu who gets married to a non-Ibo man, the man too automatically is seen as an Osu by association, but his circumstance is still better because he is NOT Ibo and cannot taste the full discrimination that an Ibo male Osu would face in his Ibo ancestral homeland.

The stigmatization is so strong especially in Imo, Abia, and Anambra States with some male elders bluntly saying that "if traditional Ibo marriage CANNOT be eradicated, then Osu outcastes system CANNOT be eradicated." I heard these statements live, so, I wasn't told.

Why will you investigate the roots of whom you claim to love and want to marry ?

I have asked one of my Ibo friends about this when he said he is investigating his intended bride and the only rubbish he spewed out was that he was investigating if his intended bride had cases of mental illness running in her family.

I told him to his face that he was a liar and that I know this custom is to check if the girl is from the outcast 0su lineage.

The idiot shut up.

I dated an Anambra girl with a surname Nweke and I noticed how she was desperate to have me marry her. I thought this was out of pure love for me until I introduced her to the same Ibo guy I referenced above and how he dismissed her after she mentioned her name and hamlet in his own village.

This same Ibo guy was telling me I can't marry from his village that their women are not expected to marry outside if they are Adas( first female born child ).

After that introduction to my friend , our relationship went cold .

It's later I concluded that she assumed that this my Ibo friend who was once very close to me will forever look down at her in marriage.

Me sef don suffer this 0su curse thing.

I am however grateful that my Nkechi Nweke from Nnewi is happily married to an Obudu man that loves her .

She has since forgotten her village .

Yes it’s still in practice but there is an attempt to stamp it out. I’ve seen a few government billboards condemning it in the east.

But in very rural communities especially in Imo state I don’t think much progress has been made.

Yes, it is practiced in every state BUT not every community in the state will do it. Some people will be investigated before marriage and revealed to be osu but if the other family doesn’t believe in it, the marriage can still go ahead (especially if the person is wealthy or popular).

Also some people who are very religious still go ahead to marry the person citing that there’s no difference between slave or freeborn in Christ.

I am from Ndoki land in Abia State and it is not practiced in my area, and has never been practiced. I hear it's still strong in Imo State, especially the rural areas. I don't know about other states.

First of all, i think you have zero knowledge of igbo customs and traditions. It's the duty of parents to investigate the family is to marry into to ascertain their history and compatibility.

Marriage is between families not just love. I'm not telling you to convince you because i don't care about your opinion.

Osu caste has been misrepresented for years. Osu are sacred people chosen to serve a particular deity but Christianity corrupted it's meaning.
